"Oh, god, not again...." Alissa suddenly moaned, rousing the other two from their boredom-induced stupor.
"What is it?" Horace said, looking out the front window. "I don't see---"
There, far far ahead of them, the highway was blocked off with abandoned cars, roughly done in such a way to block off all access except for one central lane.
"We don't have time for this." Alissa said, her teeth biting into his lip with each word. "When we hit it, we're just going to ram through, and--"
"HOLD UP!" Horace said, making the other two look back in surprise. "LOOK AGAIN! LOOK CLOSELY!"
As Horace turned his head to figure out what on earth Ian was talking about---he suddenly noticed the figures standing alongside the barricade, who were noticeably smaller and slimmer than the people they had already been dealing with.
"Humans?" Horace said, almost too shock to articulate his words. "Actual honest humans? It's almost too good to be true!"
And then he noticed that some of the humans standing by the barricade were now pointing guns at them, and he knew all too well that it was to good to be true.
As the vehicle came to a slow stop in front of the barricade, three men armed with hunting rifles motioned for Horace and the others to get out of th car. As the three did so, two of the men suddenly began to inspect the inside of the vehicle, looking form top to bottom.
"What're they doing?" Ian said, looking to the one man still staring them down.
"You're with that god damn restaurant, aren't you?" the man said, sneering at the three of them. "Good 'n' Fast or whatever the hell it's called."
".....Wasn't it obvious?" Horace said. "Look, buddy, we're not looking for trouble right now. We've had a long...however long it's been since this all started, and we really, REALLY don't need any more trouble."
"And we don't want to cause you any." the man said. "Just making sure that you're not carrying.....you know. Are they clean, Joe?"
"They're clean!" the man named Joe said. "Not a thing in there!"
"God, good." the first man said, nodding to the three of them.
".....Why are you doing this?" Horace said. "Harassing people at gunpoint like this."
"Simple." the man said. "If there's none of that frickin' hayburger shit around, then there won't be any fatassed horses coming around destroying property and assaulting people. Do you have any idea of how screwed up this nation is right now?"
"I think we have a pretty good idea." Ian said. "Now, PLEASE....can we go through, now?"
