You, Kiyoko, and Ai appeared on the pad after a flash of light.

“Woah!” you said out loud. You had just teleported from Space School Academy all the way to apparently Mars.

“Yup. Monstown has a lot of robots,” Kiyoko said.

Apparently that’s what she thought you were amazed by. However, without the teleportation and the fact you were on Mars, the large crowd of robots in front of you. There was one thing you noticed about them though.

“Hey, why are all of them female, though?”

“Female?”

“Yeah, the robots. Why are they all women?”

“What're you talking about? Robots can’t be female,” Ai pointed out.

“Yeah, robots don’t have genders. They’re machines,” Kiyoko said.

“N- Okay, but I meant like…why do the look like human women?”

“What are you talking about? That’s just what robots look like,” Ayano said over your headpiece.

Kiyoko giggled at your fumbling. “You’re funny, Shuji,” she commented before leading you and Ai through the station. You were left embarrassed over your lack of common knowledge of the future once again.

“Hey, chin up,” Ai said to you. “Need to keep yourself focused if you wanna save your girlfriend, alright?”

It seems like she thought you were just distressed, which at least saved her image of you from looking like an idiot. Also, it was partially true at least. “Thanks, Ai.” You stood up on your tiptoes to kiss her on the cheek in appreciation, earning a cute blush from her.

You three entered into a hover train (wait, how did you know about this but not about robots and teleportation?) and took your seats. There were plenty to choose from since all the robots seemed to prefer standing. It was strange seeing all of them act so… well, robotic. Especially compared to Hotaru. You wanted to ask, but didn’t want to end up looking weird again.

“Hey, Kiyoko,” Ai said. Luckily, she stepped up to ask in your stead. “Why are all the robots here acting so… differently to Hotaru. These ones seem more mechanical.”

“Because they haven’t learned sentience yet,” Kiyoko answered. “When robots are made, they can’t feel emotions like organic species, at least not right away. They have to learn them over time through experiencing the real world. Until then, they’re basically no different from an air fryer.” You guessed that was the equivalent of toasters in the future. “And since Monstown is mostly an automated robot factory town, almost every robot here is brand new, too new to learn sapience. That, plus the lack of any sapient beings on Mars, robot or organic, means they develop emotions much slower than most robots elsewhere in the galaxy.”

“Huh. Will that be a problem for us?” you asked.

“Probably not. They might be stiff for protocol or get out of our way since we’re humans. Either way, it doesn’t change our plans. And worse case, Ayano can hack them out of the way.”

“Please try not to rely on me too much. I’m about to start a new Darkest Dungeon LVIII run,” Ayano’s voice said into each of your ears.

You have literally never heard of that game in your entire life. Must be some kind of future game franchise.

The hovertrain exited the station and allowed you to see the red planet, which was surprisingly green. Must’ve been terraformed, you think. Humanity did have 500 years to do it, after all. Scattered around the greenery though was the automated city of Monstown. The streets were filled with carts and robots moving in perfect, inhuman harmony. Flying trolleys formed long lines in the air, carrying materials between every building. In the distance you saw a particularly large building. Despite it having the same clean, white design as the rest of the city, it seemed far more imposing.

“That’s your destination,” Ayano’s deadpan voice said.

“The robot scraphouse of the Tusk Recycling Company. Sponsored by the DRR,” Kiyoko introduced.

“That’s where Hotaru is?” you asked.

“Mm-hm,” Ayano said.

“Yup,” Kiyoko said.

You were eager to get to Hotaru, but being so close and on a train heading right towards the location, you could feel the butterflies in your stomach form immediately.

“Don’t worry Shujikou,” Ai said, putting her hand on your shoulder. “We’ll get her.”

You nodded your head, filled with determination.
