Out on the big people sidewalk, beyond the big stone and wrought iron fence, Jill's new friend Cindy was walking slowly along, glancing around curiously at the big fence, as well as the small building beyond. Jill saw that today Cindy wore jeans and a sweatshirt, and had her long blond hair pulled back into a pony tail. She hadn't come near the entrance yet, so she didn't see Jill and Jackie.
When Jill moved as if to push through one of the exit doors, Jackie grabbed her arm, pulling her back. "What are you doing? You want to get stepped on?"
Jill shrugged off Jackie's hand, laughing. "That's no ordinary Big. That's Cindy, my new friend I was telling you about." Jill turned and called out to the giant girl, waving. "Hey, Cindy! Over here!"
Cindy looked around a moment, then spotted the two tiny teens on the little walk on the other side of the fence. She hadn't seen them at first because they were very near the bottom edge of the front fence, and that part was made of heavy stone a foot high. Thick wrought iron bars rose from the lower band of stone ten feet up to an identical stone band that served as the top of the fence. Cindy moved to a position just above Jill and Jackie, gripping two of the black bars as she looked down.
"Hi, Jill!" Cindy said, smiling. "Who's your friend?"
"Don't you mean, who's your 'little' friend?" Jackie replied, crossing her arms across her chest and glaring up at Cindy.
Cindy looked confused. "What? What do you mean? I just asked-"
Jackie shook her head and waved her hand dismissively. "Save it, biggie. What are you doing in Tinytown, honey? What's your angle?"
"What's my-"
Jill slapped Jackie on the arm. "Jackie! Stop it! Cindy is a nice girl! She doesn't have an 'angle'. She's my friend."
Jackie rolled her eyes. "Your friend, huh? Who you've known for, what? A day? So I guess you know from that long acquaintance that she doesn't want you for a pet or a toy, right?" She looked up at Cindy. "Got a little doll house at home, biggie? Just dying to have a little live doll to keep and play with?"
Cindy shook her head, looking a little hurt. "No, Jackie. You've got me all wrong. I like Jill. I-"
"Oh," said Jackie, nodding. "I get it. You like girls, huh? You know the great thing about girls our size, biggie?' Jackie gave Cindy a wink. "For you giants, it really doesn't matter if little ones like us are into the girl-on-girl thing or not. Only thing that matters is that you like it, right, biggie?"
Jill shoved Jackie hard, causing her to stumble a little. "Hey!"
Jill moved toward Jackie, tensing to shove her again. "Stop saying that about Cindy! For God's sake, Jackie, you don't even know her! Give her a chance!"
Jackie made as if to push Jill back.
"Please," said Cindy, kneeling down on the grass on the other side of the fence, peering down at the two small girls. "Please don't fight, girls! There's no need for this! Jill, Jackie just wants to protect you, and she is right about one thing: you don't really know me that well. Try to believe me, though, both of you. I mean you no harm. I'd never hurt anybody, especially not little people like you. It would be like...like hurting children."
"Oh, now that's not condescending." Jackie said sarcastically.
"Oh, Jackie! I just meant-"
"She just meant we're little, Jackie. Nothing more." Jill, tired of the whole stupid argument, brushed past Jackie, and pushed out of one of the little doors that was set into the stone wall. On the other side, Cindy had to scoot her knee out of the way as a little rectangle of the thick stone pivoted out toward her. Jill stepped out onto the big sidewalk, and the door sprung back into place instantly.
"Wow," breathed Cindy, as she traced a finger along the edges of the little door. It fit neatly into it's jamb, blending into the stone almost perfectly. There was, she saw, no lock or handle on this side of the door.
Jill was nodding up at her friend. "Yeah, it's some pretty amazing architecture. The doors open only from the inside. Security measure. You wouldn't believe it, but there are ten doors spaced along this walkway alone." As Jill spoke, Cindy noticed one of the other doors down the walk push open, letting out a boy a little smaller than Jill and Jackie. He stepped onto the sidewalk and directly into the hands of a giant woman. She hugged him tightly as she rose, planting a soft kiss on his face.
"Hey, Jackie!," Jill called through the fence. "She hasn't eaten me yet!"
Cindy giggled.
"Funny," Jackie said, leaning against the bars.
"Your brother picking you up today?" Jill asked, trying to get Jackie back to more civil conversation.
Jackie nodded. "Yeah, but I bet he'll be late. He'll probably stop by the pond and play in the mud again. I hate it when he picks me up when his hands are dirty. Last week he got my best skirt filthy! That's why I'm going with this jeans-and sweatshirt look lately."
"I like to dress like that, too. It's comfortable." Cindy tried a tentative smile in Jackie's direction.
Jackie glanced up at Cindy, shrugged. "Great. We'll start a club. Get jackets with our names on them."
Cindy chuckled. "You don't like me yet, Jackie, but I already like you. How old's your brother?"
"Eight," Jackie replied, kicking at the stone wall. "He doesn't mind picking up his little 'big' sis, but sometimes it takes him awhile to get around to it."
"Well," Cindy said. "Why do you have to wait for him? Can't you just come out now."
"No, Cindy," Jill answered for Jackie. "That's part of the security around here. There's a security guy just inside the building. Mr. Jackson. He's got a room full of video monitors, giving him views from cameras all around the complex. Nobody gets out of here unless they're picked up by a designated big person.
Cindy laughed again, causing Jackie to look at her, annoyed. "Oh, I'm sorry, Jackie. But it is kind of funny, you know, that you have to wait for your little brother to pick you up."
Jackie stared at Cindy for a moment, then lowered her eyes, a weak smile touching her lips. "Yeah, I guess it is a little stupid."
"Hey!" Cindy said suddenly. "Would they let you come out if I said I'd take you?"
Jackie shook her head. "I don't think so. It has to be an authorized person. Jill, you asked permission this morning for Cindy to be your big person today, didn't you?"
Jill nodded, glad that Jackie had apparently stopped using the derogatory, 'biggie".
"Yes, I did. But you know, I bet Mr. Jackson would let you come out here to wait for your brother, as long as you stayed in sight, and Cindy was here."
Jackie sighed. "Maybe. I'll ask." Jackie punched an intercom button that was near the door on her side of the wall. She raised Mr. Jackson, and spoke to him for a few minutes. After she got off, she looked at the other two girls. "He says, okay." She moved toward the door, looking a little disgusted. "As long as I don't wander too far from Cindy."
Both the other girls laughed.
When Jackie pushed through the gate, she saw that Cindy had moved to the grassy area on the other side of the sidewalk, and was sitting down on the soft grass with her legs crossed in front of her. Jill sat nearby, leaning her back against a small tree that was nearly as tall as Cindy when she was standing. Jackie seated her self under a second tree, a little farther away.
"Now, remember, Jackie," Cindy chided gently. "Stay close to me so you don't get hurt."
Jackie's lips came out in a pout.
Jill laughed. "Lighten up, Jackie! She's just teasing you! Little miss sarcasm can dish it out, but she can't take it!"
"I'm laughing," Jackie pointed at her chest. "Inside."
Jill and Cindy laughed again.
Now Cindy asked...
