"Hey!" Cindy said suddenly. "Why don't you two come to my place for a while?"
Jill looked up, smiling. "Sure, Cindy. I already told my mom you and I would be hanging out after school today. How about you, Jackie?"
The dark-haired girl shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. I'd have to check with my mom first." Jackie looked up at Cindy. "What's to do at your house, anyway, Miss Large and In Charge?"
Cindy smirked. "Funny. I thought we could play computer games, or surf, play music, you know, whatever."
Jackie appeared to consider the offer, then shrugged again. "Maybe, I guess. My brother can drop me by my house first. I think my mom would want to meet you."
"Okay," Cindy said, sliding her backpack off her shoulder. "Hey, you guys hungry? I think I've got a candy bar in here." The giant girl set the pack on the ground in front of her, and began rummaging through it. After a few moments she pulled out a candy bar with a dark brown wrapper. Cindy held the candy bar up. "Hershey bar?"
"Yes, please!" answered Jill happily, holding out her hands.
"Me, too," said Jackie.
Cindy ripped open the wrapper, and broke off a single, small rectangular section. She held it up, glancing down at both tiny girls. Cindy them broke the single piece into two equal parts, handing one down to Jill, and the other to Jackie.
"I'm not trying to be selfish, guys, but that looks like plenty for your little tummies."
Jill nodded, nibbling on the big, thick piece of chocolate in her hands. "Don't worry about it, Cindy. You're right. This is plenty for me. Thanks."
"Me, too," managed Jackie through a mouthful of chocolate.
"Good," Cindy took a bite of the candy bar, and began looking through her pack again. She pulled out a water bottle. She looked at the bottle for a moment, then unscrewed the cap. Carefully, she poured a small amount of water into the little cap, and set it on the grass between and Jackie.
"Thanks," said Jill, walking over to the cap, and cradling it in her arms like a big bowl. She brought it carefully to her lips and drank. When she was finished, Jill gestured to Jackie with the cap.
When Jackie nodded, Jill carried it over, and set it down on the ground in front of her.
Jill returned to her tree, continuing to munch the chocolate. "You know, Cindy, you really have a knack for accommodating little people. Are you sure you've never been around people like us before?"
Cindy shook her head. "No, Jill, I haven't. When the teacher brought you in the other day, that was the first time I ever saw a little person. Actually, attending to your needs seems kind of easy, what with you needing such small amounts of everything."
"Awww," said Jackie dryly. "Ain't we just the cutest!"
"Jackie!"
Cindy laughed. "It's okay, Jill. I think I'm getting used to her sense of humor. And, yes, Jackie, you are just the cutest."
"Hummph," grumbled Jackie, swallowing a bite of candy, then reaching for the water cap.
Mostly to change the subject, Jill said, "Hey, Cindy, did I see an iPod in your pack?"
Cindy nodded. "Yeah. I got one last Christmas. Want to see it?"
"Sure, " said Jill jumping up, and brushing chocolate bits off her t-shirt and shorts. She walked over to stand in front of Cindy's crossed legs.
Cindy pulled a sleek blue iPod out of her pack. Setting the unit on her lap, Cindy held the earbuds down to Jill, which the small girl clutched with some difficulty in both arms. Cindy scrolled through some songs, settling on one. "You like that one?"
Jill couldn't lift the earbuds up to her ears, of course, but she could hear the music fairly well with them clutched to her chest. Jill nodded her head to the music. "'Kiss, kiss'. Yeah, that's a good one."
Cindy looked down at Jill struggling with the earbuds. "Hey, Jill I have a better idea. Here." Cindy reached down and took the earbuds from Jill's arms. She then set them on her own thigh, arranging them so that they lay on the edge of her leg, the earbuds spaced about two inches apart. Cindy patted the grass next to her leg. "Sit here, Jill. See how that works."
Jill sat down, leaning her back up against Cindy's jean-clad thigh, and positioning her head near the earbuds. She had to pull them down a little, but quickly had them settled against her ears. "Wow! Cool. Turn it down just a bit, please, Cindy."
Cindy turned down the volume a touch. She looked over at Jackie, who was just finishing her candy. "Wanna listen, Jackie? I think you can both use it at the same time."
Jackie got up, slapping her hands on her jeans. "Okay. I've always wanted to use one of those. Of course, they don't make them in our size." Jackie walked over to where the other girls sat, plopping down next to Jill. She slapped Jill's leg. "Move over, Cindy's toy."
Jill punched Jackie's arm, but did move over so that Jackie could place one of the big earbuds against her head. After listening a moment, Jackie nodded, a faint smile touching the corners of her mouth. Jackie tilted her head far back until she saw Cindy's face looking back at her. "Play something a little harder, okay?"
Cindy nodded. "Sure."
Both tiny girls listened as the new song came on. Jackie nodded, grinning. "'Remember the Name'. Nice choice, Jill's keeper."
Cindy snorted, and reached down, and cocked her index finger on her thumb, and gave Jackie a light flick on the arm. Jackie absently slapped the huge thigh she was leaning against.
For a few moments, Cindy watched both small girls leaning back against her thigh, earbuds to their tiny heads, little bodies bobbing to the music.
Finally, Jackie rolled her gaze up and back, peering up at Cindy's smiling face. "This is cute, isn't it?"
Cindy giggled. "Well, maybe a little."
Jackie pulled the earbud from her head, and stood up, waving up at Cindy. "Jackie, out!"
Cindy and Jill both laughed.
"Oh," said Jackie suddenly. "Here comes Bryan."
Jill stood up, removing the earbud.
Cindy looked around. "Bryan?"
Jill nodded. "Yeah. Bryan is Jackie's brother."
The young boy was walking up the big people's sidewalk toward the three girls. He was a handsome boy, with thick dark hair, just like his sister's. He wore a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. He was scanning the ground along the fence, looking for Jackie.
"Over here, Bry!" Jackie called, stepping around Cindy's legs, and waving.
"Awww," Cindy whispered quietly to Jill. "What a cute little boy!"
Jill nodded, gesturing for Cindy to bend down a little. When Cindy did so, Jill whispered back. "Actually, he's got a little crush on me, I think."
Jackie had overheard this, and nodded. "Oh, yeah. Big time."
"Ooooh!" replied Cindy softly. "How cute!"
Bryan pulled up near the three girls, glancing shyly at Cindy, then looking down at Jill and Jackie. "Hey, Sis. Hi, Jill." All three girls noticed the young boy's face turn a little red as he looked down at Jill.
"Hey, big boy!" said Jill playfully. "This is our new friend, Cindy."
Bryan looked back at the pretty, normal-sized girl. 'Hi."
Cindy smiled. "Hi, yourself, Bryan! Nice to meet you! So, are you a wise guy, like your tiny big sister here?"
Bryan blushed. "No." The shy boy looked at his feet. He then glanced down at Jackie, and began reaching for her. "Come on, Sis."
"Wait a minute, Bryan." The young boy and the two tiny girls turned to look at Cindy. She stood up and held her palms up. "Let me see your hands, Bryan."
Bryan blinked. "Huh?"
"Your hands," Cindy repeated patiently. "Let me see them."
Dumbfounded, Bryan held out his hands, palms up, to Cindy. All three girls could see that Bryan's hands were filthy, streaked with dried, crusted-over mud. Apparently he had stopped by the pond, as Jackie had thought he might.
Cindy clucked her tongue. "Uh-uh. You're not picking up your sister with hands that look like that. Go over to that drinking fountain and rinse them off. And don't come back until they're clean. Okay, Bryan?"
Bryan gawked at the new girl.
"Come on. Run along, honey. You don't want to get your sister's clothes all dirty, do you? And dry your hands on your pants after."
"But.."
Cindy gave Bryan a stern look. Bryan held her gaze for a moment, then dropped his eyes. He began walking over to the fountain.
When the boy was out of earshot, Jill laughed. "You know how to handle kids, huh, Cindy?"
The giant girl smiled down at Jill. " I guess so. I've got a sister about his age. You just have to be firm."
"Yeah, right!" replied Jackie, crossing her arms over her chest. "I could try that till I was blue in the face, and alI he would do is laugh and pick me up anyway! Oooh, I wish I was big!"
"Well," Jill said. You might as well quit wishing, girl, 'cause it ain't gonna happen. And, by the way, don't you think you should thank Cindy for what she just did?"
"Oh, Jill, that's okay...," Cindy began.
Jackie sighed, glancing up at Cindy, then back to the ground. "Uh, yeah, thanks."
Jill beamed up at Cindy, winking.
"I might just win you over yet, Jackie." said Cindy happily. Then she stooped down to retrieve her iPod, and her water bottle, stuffing them into her backpack. "Ready to go, Jill?"
"Sure." Jill raised her arms and wiggled her fingers up at Cindy. As Jackie watched, Cindy wrapped her hand gently around Jill's waist and lifted her up to chest level.
Cindy looked at Jill. "Backpack or hands?"
Jill placed her small hands on Cindy's thumb. "Hands, definitely. Who wants to be in a stuffy old backpack?"
Cindy nodded. "Okay." She looked down at Jackie, who stood near Cindy's feet, looking up. Cindy pulled a pen and note pad out of a compartment on her pack. She quickly scribbled something on it. Tearing the little paper in half, she lowered the piece with the writing on it down to Jackie, who took it in both hands. To the small girl, the paper was the size of a movie poster. "That's my number, Jackie. Why don't you ask your mom if you can come over? Oh, can you use the phone?"
Jackie rolled her eyes. She stepped over and kicked Cindy's ankle as hard as she could.
Cindy looked down at Jackie innocently. "Um...ouch, I guess."
Before Jackie could muster a retort, Bryan came back. After Cindy inspected his hands, he was allowed to pick up his sister. Jill and Cindy watched Bryan lift his sister in one hand, then set her in the crook of his arm. Placing his other hand gently on top of her, Bryan began to walk down the walk.
"Bye, Big Bry!" Jill called from where Cindy clutched her to her breast. Bryan looked around, embarrassed, and waved back.
Cindy laughed. "He really is stuck on you! That's so cute!"
"Yeah. He's a neat little kid. Okay, let's go, big girl."
The two girls then...
