“Bottles it is, then! We’ll just need to find you someone to go up against… Anyone?” Skye scans the table for another contestant. The lillie by her hand, the one taking photos a moment ago, looks around, shrugs and sticks her hand up. “Hey Skye! I’ll do it! So what happens now?”

Skye grabs a recently empty beer bottle from across the table, regaining the attention of the small crowd around them. She puts the bus-sized bottle to her lips, taking in the last few drops before placing it on its side in front of you, keeping a finger on it to stop it rolling towards you. Lin, your competitor, jogs to your side.

“So neither of you have done this one before? No? Well, nice to see Natalie’s not doing her job at all.” She shoots her an expression of mock dismay, “I thought you were friends!”

“I dnnt lhhk brre!” Natalie retorts, through a mouthful of something. She swallows, and speaks clearly, “and last time we did this the bottle wasn’t actually empty, ruined my nice autumn tablecloth,” she continues. “But go on then, I’m invested,” she takes a sip of her cocktail. “Money’s on Lin. Metaphorically. But good luck to you both!”

Skye looks back down at the both of you, and slowly turns the bottle towards you. “So, the rules. Goal? The thing you’ll be doing. Shouldn’t take too long to explain. You both,” she taps the bottle with her finger, making a muted ringing sound, “go in here. Plenty of space. I spin the bottle,” she rotates it once, “and you both try to climb out in, say, twenty seconds. First one out wins, and the other stays in the bottle, though I guess that’s only for a few seconds more. Winner gets Natalie’s car. So, ready?”

You and Lin share a look. “So ready!" She squats, and snaps a quick photo of the bottle, and Skye behind it, before pocketing the phone. “Might need a ladder or something to get in the thing, though.” She adjusts her cap. She tries climbing into the bottleneck, and slips out, elbows and palms now coated in a thin layer of beer and saliva.

Skye obliges, pinching Lin between her thumb and forefinger. “Arms up.” Lin raises them both, like she’s diving, and Skye inserts her into the bottle. You briefly see her slide to the bottom through the tinted glass. “And you!”

Fingers longer than your body clamp around your waist, and the table falls away from beneath you, though this trip is a short one. You raise your arms, and feel the cold, wet glass against your front and sides, though your back stays dry. Despite this, there is no room to move in any direction, fortunately, Skye lends a finger, nudging you further into the bottle until the neck widens enough for you to crawl forwards the last few inches. You hear a dull ‘pop!’ behind you, probably Skye pulling her finger out of the bottle. Like Lin, you briefly slide down the smooth, rounded surface until you reach the ‘bottom’ at the main body of the bottle.

The smell of beer hits you. It’s in the air, your clothes, you’re standing in a shallow pool of it. Drops of it dot the glass, sparkling in the darkness with the subtle shakes of the table. It is quite dark in here, much more than it would seem from outside, and everything you can see in the dim light is green. Your eyes adjust, and you spot Lin at the other end of the bottle, trying to use the circular base of the bottle to take a mirror selfie.

The bottle shakes, drops fall from the ‘ceiling’ and a strangely loud ringing sound echoes through the bottle, heard clearly over the din coming through the bottle’s opening behind you. You look up to see Skye looming over you, her image distorted (and incredibly green). “All good?” she asks. Lin gives her a thumbs up, you follow suit. “Good.”She twists her hand round, and lightly wraps her fingers around the middle of the bottle.

You’re instantly slammed against the side of the bottle, bouncing off the hard glass like a pinball. Your vision is taken over by a green blur, your body is sprayed with alcohol. Time slows down, and you can do nothing with the extra perception as you hit the rounded walls again, and again, and then you collide with her. You are both slammed again by the spinning glass, and now you’re pressed against it, as if gravity was now sideways.

You blink, and you’re both slumped on the floor. You scramble away from each other, before taking a breather. Your head is still spinning, she looks like she might throw up. You’re both more than a little dizzy. Two muffled voices break through.

“Seventeen…” Skye chirps.

“Sixteen…” Natalie sings.

You and Lin both snap to attention. You share a look for a moment, before frantically struggling to your feet, slipping on the smooth, wet glass. You try to get your bearings, but…

“Thirteen…”
