"We can't do that." Ian said. "We're just...frycooks. You know, the guys who make the food and place the orders and so on? We don't actually do anything more than that. We're pretty much as low on the totem pole as you can get."
"But you are employees, right?" the yellow stallion said, looking at the three rather intensely. "You're in the system."
"....We are, yes." Horace said. "And?"
"You can talk to people then. Connect with people." the yellow stallion said. "....Get your hands on more of that Stop N' Burger food."
"And if we can't?" said Ian, even as the two others made various gestures to try and dissuade him from what he was saying. "Won't make a difference who we know if there isn't any food to give to you."
The expression on the red stallion's face (and every other pony's face) was answer enough.
....
"Hello?" said Horace, speaking into his cell phone. "Chris, is that you?"
"Horace?" the person on the other end of the line said. "Horace, is that you? Jess, I thought you were dead!"
"Not quite yet, boss." said Horace. "How are things?"
"How the hell do you think I'm doing? My restaurant's been god damn destroyed! My entire stock is gone! The insurance company isn't paying up! I was robbed at knifepoint by a unicorn for the fries she thought had in my suitcase!"
"Well, shit, sorry about that." Horace said. "Must be tough for you right now."
"Oh, like you wouldn't believe. Every other Stop N' Burger in the entire country as been mobbed and pillaged. The whole company's gone nuts, and the government is apparently planning to press charges against all us? Can you imagine?"
"I can." Horace said. "Sir? I--I'm sorry to interrupt you, but I need you to know something."
"What?"
"Well," Horace said. "even as we speak, I am now in the presence of some...customers. Some...very enthusiastic and...very loyal customers."
Chris was silent.
"These customers, the ones who are with Alissa and Ian and me, actually went out of their way to talk to us about how much they love Stop N' Burger, and want to make t very clear how much they love our products."
There was a moan on the other side of the phone.
"These....customers," Horace said. "were hoping to know where they might be able to get a few...samples of the food we make."
"Samples, right?" Chris said. "And how many....customers are we talking about here?"
"Two dozen or so. All very enthusiastic and.....very, very eager."
Chris was silent.
