Billy made up his mind to attempt a more direct approach. Going towards the hedges Billy had to get on his hands and knees and crawl under the thick thatch to Reach the chain-link fence. Once he was there it was pretty easy to climb up the various rings and shimmy his way over the top. It was a short drop back to the ground. Crouching low Billy felt exposed; not the least of which because of his dangling giblets. Billy tried to keep low as he worked his way back towards the house always keeping an eye on the Giants.
Fortunately, most of the giants appear to be young serving women in the white and black uniforms, caterers. They were too busy coming and going to pay any attention to Billy as he made his way towards the house. Billy found a hiding spot by a flower pot and watched. A young blonde woman was bringing out a covered tray and set it on a table not far from him. Again, Billy’s stomach growled reminding him he had not only skipped breakfast but he also missed lunch. The sun had just passed over so it was definitely past noon. Where had the time gone? <I guess getting shrunk to a fraction of your size and then carried around by my sister like a toy took more time than I thought,> Billy mused to himself.
Deciding to take a risk Billy waited for the blonde to turn and go back into the house and made a dash for the table. His feet were getting sore running barefoot on the roof cement slabs that made up part of the backyard in and around the pool. Billy ignored the discomfort and ran on anyway.
Fortunately, most the tables had white table cloths draped over them which let him hide without fear of being seen. Through the sheets Billy watched as shadows moved about and he heard the smacking of hard heels on the concrete slabs. When he did not see any shadows nor heard the close proximity of steps on the concrete he slipped out from under cover and stood on his tiptoes to look over the trays.
The trays were covered by white cloth which Billy had to yank off in order to investigate what was underneath. The first one only showed silverware. Fortunately Billy didn’t give up and investigated the second tray. Yes, looks likes tea sandwiches. Reaching as far as he could Billy grabbed two of the, “small,” snack size sandwiches and darted back under the table. Seeing that one of the table cloths was partially under the table Billy pulled it all the way towards him. No sooner had the table cloth fell back in place then Billy heard the clunk clunk of a woman’s pump and a shadow appear on one side of the table.
“Huh, where did the Cover go?” a feminine voice said somewhere well above him. “ oh, here it is.” Billy could see a dark silhouette of a massive figure just on the other side of the white tablecloth obscuring him from view. The figure folded in on itself and then straitened again. In a quick click Billy heard a rustle above him as the cloth was laid out over one of the trays. Looking down Billy could just see the tips of a woman’s black semi casual dress shoe poking out from under the table cloth.
“Hm, wait a minute,” The feminine voice came again this time standing over Billy‘s hiding spot. “ where is the other cover?“
Billy looked down at the ground by his feet. Damn, he should not have pulled that tablecloth under the table. It has been an instinct without thought. If the caterer pulled up the tablecloth she would undoubtedly find him. Billy looked around for somewhere to hide but there was nowhere for him to go. He couldn’t slip out the other side as that would expose him to the entire yard and he couldn’t run.
Billy held his breath as he watched the tips of the woman’s shoes disappear. He heard the click, click, click as she walked around the table. After doing a complete walk around the shadow stopped where it had started. Billy jumped a little when he heard the woman’s voice again this time much louder, “ DARCY, GRAB ANOTHER COVER CLOTH FOR THIS TABLE.”
Billy let out his breath as the sounds of the woman walking away were heard. Sitting down on the captured white linen because it was more comfortable than his naked butt sitting on the rough pavement, Billy quickly devoured his sandwiches. They were probably pretty small by normal standards but to him they were able to occupy both his hands each. Fortunately they were cucumber with some sort of mayonnaise or some kind of spread. The fresh cucumbers were full of moisture which helped not only eat the food but also helped his dehydration. After taking a bite of the second sandwich Billy again froze while another shadow came across the table this one’s sounding a little different. Again there was sounds of something happening above him. Billy figured it was Darcy, whoever she was, putting another cloth over one of the trays. Again they were sounds of somebody moving away and Billy was able to finish his sandwich.
