"Good morning, Dr. Adams!" Susan greeted the tiny doctor with her usual cheery smile, offering him her hand on the floor so she could carry him to the desk and start the day as usual, with a report on the progress made and the remaining tasks to finish the development of the biosuit and the vehicle.
"Hi Susan" James looked up and smiled at her. He had worked with her since the start of the project and found her to be not only a capable and motivated lab assistant who he could bounce ideas with, but also the kind of person that made the days look brighter and life easier, even beyond work. Too busy to consider the prospect of a romantic life and with his developed fascination for the giant Gulliverians and the titanic Brobdingnagians it didn't take him long to start getting smitten by some of the people he interacted with regularly on the job, and while he also talked with a couple of attractive Brobdingnagians, his logical mind always seemed to remind him how impossible it felt to carry anything resembling a normal relationship.
He sometimes wondered if he would feel the same about Susan if she was a miles tall Brobdingnagian instead of a Gulliverian "merely" hundreds of feet tall, because he knew what he liked so much about her was not her size but her optimism, a positive outlook on life that was undeterred by an analytical mind that could sometimes suggest things could be impossible to achieve, and that more that once inspired him to overcome some serious obstacles in the design of the biosuit. Maybe it was just because she worked so closely with him that he believed things could work, but in any case his heart knew what he wanted.
".. And that means we might want to give it some last round of tests to the suit, in an environment as close to the real thing as possible, but we might not have enough time for this if we want to make it before the deadline. What do you think we should do Doctor?"
"Dr. Adams?"
"James?"
The slight rumble of her finger tapping an area of the desk close to him finally broke his train of thought and the doctor quickly apologized while Susan just giggled.
"We can't afford you to get distracted doctor, we're on the last stages of the project" The lab assistant teased.
"I'm sorry, I was just.. what was the question again?" Susan just smiled at him, making James wonder what did she think of him. Would she know the reason behind those recent distractions?
"I was asking if there's a way we can do a last round of tests before the deadline, I know we're running out of time but we have some slightly inconsistent values" Susan explained
James did have an idea, but it would require Susan's help, and courage to even mention it to her.
What happens next?
