Tara: A 26-year old artist
After some deliberation, Luke and Jessica decided to go with Tara. She listed her occupation as an artist and she had even posted a link to her online gallery, which mostly consisted of breathtaking landscape paintings. Luke sent her an email and they arranged to meet at the library, which seemed like a safe location.
The two Lilliputians were seated near the Reference section when they saw their new roommate stroll in. They immediately recognized her from her photo, a willowy woman with thick, glossy-black hair that came down to the middle of her back. She was wearing a Persian red wrap dress and gold gladiator sandals that showed off her long legs, a slouch handbag slung over one narrow shoulder. Grinning broadly, Jessica stood up on the Gulliverian-sized bench and waved to Tara. The giantess saw her and headed over in their direction.
“Hey, you guys must be Luke and Jessica,” she said, kneeling down in front of the bench.
“We sure are,” Luke replied. Tara extended the index finger on her right hand, the wooden bracelets around her slender wrist clacking together loudly. Both of the Lilliputians shook the mammoth digit, which was still splattered with dried paint.
“It’s nice to meet you,” the Gulliverian woman told them. “I’ve been looking for new roommates for awhile. So you guys aren’t from around here?”
Luke shook his head and Tara smiled.
“Well, my apartment is only a mile or two from here. I can carry you there,” she said. “I mean, if you’re okay with that.”
Jessica exchanged a brief glance with her husband and then agreed. The Gulliverian opened her purse and then lowered it onto the bench, so that they could climb inside. The idea of actually riding in a house-sized purse was incredible and as they crawled inside, they marvelled at the size of Tara’s various items. Her tube of lipstick alone was the size of a torpedo.
Tara’s face filled the opening of the purse, her enormous riverstone-colored eyes peering down at them.
“You two alright in there?” She asked. Luke had sat down on her wallet, while Jessica remained standing, still looking around at her surroundings in amazement.
“Yup. Just getting used to everything,” Luke answered.
Their new roommate laughed. “It’ll take some getting used to, I’d imagine. Anyway, hang on tight.”
With that, Tara delicately picked up the handbag. Despite her care, the two Lilliputians were still jostled around as she began to walk. They couldn’t see much, since the opening to the purse was high above them, but they could hear street noises as Tara stepped outside. She was right; her apartment was relatively close to the library. Through the opening in the purse, the bright blue sky changed to a dull grayish-white ceiling. Tara’s footsteps echoed loudly as she begin to climb several sets of stairs.
“So what do you think of her?” Jessica whispered to her husband.
“She seems pretty nice.” They could hear the Gulliverian inserting a key into a lock; a second later, a door creaked open and the handbag quaked as Tara put it down. The giantess’s hand slipped down into the purse and picked up Jessica first, then Luke. They couldn’t help but notice that she was a bit rough with them, her massive fingers constricting too tightly around their bodies as she took them out and placed them on a small kitchen table.
“So this is it,” Tara said, indicating the apartment around them. It was tiny and cluttered with all sorts of art supplies. Even the ancient tan couch was piled high with blank canvases and unopened tubes of paint. There were several completed paintings decorating the walls and Jessica began to look at them as Tara announced that she would make some Earl Grey tea.
“It must be awesome being an artist,” Luke said, trying to make conversation as Tara filled a tea kettle with water.
“Oh, it has its pros and cons. It doesn’t always pay well, so I have to supplement my income in other ways.”
“Like having roommates?”
Tara paused on her way to the stove and then made a weirdly high-pitched giggle. “Yeah, like that.”
Jessica wasn’t paying much attention to their idle chitchat. Her gaze had moved from a painting of a park in autumn to a more unusual piece. The subject of the painting was a nude woman reclining upon what looked like a gigantic hand. That in itself wasn’t disturbing; the anguished expression on the woman’s pale face was what raised goosebumps on Jessica’s arms. As she continued to study the painting, she saw a black ring around the subject’s neck, with what looked like a belt leading from it.
If she didn’t know better, she’d swear that the woman was wearing a collar and leash.
“Luke!” Jessica hissed, elbowing her husband. He stopped chatting and looked over at her, noticing how her face had blanched considerably. She rolled her eyes toward the strange painting, trying to point it out to him. At first, Luke didn’t understand what she was trying to show him. Then, when he noticed the artwork, he swallowed hard.
Tara saw where they were both looking and she moved closer to the table.
“Do you like it?” She asked just as the tea kettle began to whistle, the shrill sound startling the two Lilliputians.
“Uh, yeah. It’s really well done,” Luke said lamely. The tea kettle continued to whistle but Tara didn’t take it off of the burner. Instead, she leaned down very close to them, an enigmatic grin on her face.
“Would you like to see the subject of that painting?” The giantess’ voice was soft and held a hint of malice.
Jessica felt her heart thundering in her chest. She started to say no, they didn’t want to see her, but Tara’s hand had already swooped down and closed around them. This time, she squeezed them so hard that she probably left bruises. The world moved violently around them as Tara carried the Lilliputians over to what looked like a closet. But when the giantess opened the door, they saw that it wasn’t a normal closet, filled with things like coats and umbrellas. Instead, shelves had been constructed inside and there were several plastic cages, each containing Lilliputians.
“Oh, God,” Jessica whimpered as realization dawned upon her.
“Meet your new roommates,” Tara said, reaching for one of the cages. Jessica and Luke struggled desperately in her hand. They…
