Worry set in when you realized in the week that had gone by you'd lost four whole inches. Granted you knew this would happen after your diagnosis, but it was still something you'd never get used to. You'd gone from 6'4" to 6' even, to now 5'8". Three more inches and you'd be Mandy's height. Five more and you'd be eye to eye with your wife.
This new information scared you a lot more than you were willing to admit. Right now you were still big enough to be perceived as an average human being, but sooner or later that would change. People would start to treat you more different than they already do and at which point your 'shrink' status would be more pronounced than ever before.
You backed away from your bedroom mirror with the homemade measuring system and took a long hot shower. The water itself felt good and help to relieve some of your stress, but you knew this was all only temporary. How long before you couldn't work a shower without help? Would you become so small that there mundane task became life threatening?
No answer would come to mind so you buried the thought for now. You finished your shower, got dressed and headed downstairs. There you found your family seated at the kitchen table eating breakfast, the smell of eggs, bacon, and toast made your mouth water. You then took a seat were your plate awaited you and ate.
"Are you alright, dear?" Barbara asked. It was a genuine question, but to you it felt like a one-two punch to the gut. Of course you weren't alright! You were shrinking for god's sake!
"I lost four whole inches last week. I'm 5'8" now." you answered, trying to remain calm. Finally admitting it aloud felt like taking a bullet. You wished your nightmare would stop here but knew that wouldn't be the case. The tallest 'shrink' on record was a foot and a half.
"Really? That's crazy." Mandy added. Yes it was crazy. Balls to walls insanity. Your life was essentially over. Thankfully your family still seemed to treat you as a human being as did most other people you came across... but for how much longer you wondered?
