"Are you alright dearest?"
Those words brought tears to your eyes. For the first time in a long time, someone was genuinely concerned with your welfare, and that someone happened to be a total stranger in a foreign land who had literally bought you like some sort of trinket! Your life hadn't been pleasant for the most part, and the absurdity of your current situation was just too much to take. You tried to tell your story of how you had ended up in her hands, but the words couldn't come out right between your sobs.
Finally, with a look of compassion, the woman reassured, "Don't cry, little one. I won't let anything happen to you."
You tentatively ask, "Can you get me back home?" With a sorrowful gaze, the woman responded, "I'm sorry, dearie, but there was no return address. I wouldn't know where to send you back to, unless you know your home address." You hang your head in regret: you never actually learned that information, since you never thought you'd need to.
"Besides", she continued, "I was kind of hoping for a little person to adopt. I'm not with anyone, and I have been feeling a little lonely for a long time. I'll look out for you, I promise."
For some reason, you felt comforted by this. This new "owner" looked like she just wanted a friend, and you had nothing to lose from how things now stood.
"So, little guy", the woman concluded, "how about we..."
