“What happened to its foot? It keeps holding it,” Juliet asks.

“Well Cassie…,” she begins but sees that this causes Cassie to immediately try to jump in to absolve herself. So she pauses and tells it another way, “I broke with, dropping my phone on her.”

Her mom pinches your foot with her finger, pressing assertively on it but not to squash it. You wince in the pain, which she takes no mind of. She uses her nail from her thumb to cut open your shoe and sock and pushes it away. She then examines your ankle with her remaining fingers.

“You’re hurting him!” Sarah reproaches. “Mom!” But her mother ignores her as well. Cassie smiles as she watches what she assumes will be your last moments unfold.

“Okay,” Juliet finally announces. “She can stay with you Sarah until she gets better.”

Sarah sighs in relief. Cassie sighs disdainfully.

“But…” Her mother continues, slowly increasing the pressure causing you to actively shriek in pain. You can’t tell whether she’s trying to help you, hurt you, or both. “Once she can walk, she must be gone. You must keep her in your room in no one else’s way. I don't want another tiny pest trying to steal our food.”

Why would she assume that you'd steal her food? That's a horrifying stereotype. Maybe if normals treated tinies with dignity instead of forcing them into the wild or kidnapping them as pets or toys, than there'd be less starving tinies who need to scavenge to get by.

She faces you, “If I see you anywhere else other than Sarah's room, I won’t be as pleasant as I am now. Understand?” You nod as best you can under such pain. She releases your foot, and you sigh in relief and pant on her palm.

“Cassie, do not touch her. She’s important to your sister, so leave her alone. If you mess with her, you’ll have to answer to me.”

Cassie begrudgingly, “Okay.”

“Thank you so much!” Sarah squeals.

Juliet just nods back at her in response. “Now go get me two toothpicks and a shoelace.”

Sarah runs into the other room to fetch them.

“I really don’t understand why Sarah is so concerned about these bugs,” Cassie retorts.

“It’s probably just a faze. Sometimes girls go through it.”

Sarah comes back with two toothpicks and a shoe string. Breaks off a piece of the toothpick as a splint and ties it around your foot with the shoelace, forming a splint around your leg.

“Now, be careful with it,” she explains to Sarah, gently sliding you from her palm to Sarah’s. “Don’t let it work for the next six weeks until the foot heals.”

“Thank you mom,” she replies, cupping you delicately in her hand. She runs into her room.

“Lucky break there. I’m so sorry you had to go through all of this. My mom hates you guys almost as bad as Cassie.”

Still wincing in pain, you manage to whimper out an “It’s okay.”

“Now, where should I put you,” she asks, more to herself than to you. “Where you can heal but Cassie won’t find you if she comes in.”
