Chapter 2: Bargaining for Life Shrunk by Ace Attorney Girls - Definitive Edition chapter 24 by copier · original author: lolapuff

"I'm... A machine..." Staring at your reflection, you force you these words. "I'm really... Just... A machine..."

"More specifically, you're a clockwork automaton." The girl explains in a casual tone you don't think fits the words being said. "I've build you to act as if you were alive. But I did not expect for you to turn out so... Convincing!"

"I'm not acting." You turn around to face the girl. "I'm alive!"

"Well... You're not ALIVE alive, you know?"

"No. No I don't. When you were trying to kill me, I was afraid of you. I was REALLY scared of you there. If I'm not... ALIVE alive... Then what are those feelings that I feel?"

"You're not able to REALLY feel feelings. You can only act as if you were feeling them... It's a hard to explain... Huh? Why am I trying to explain myself? I should should just... Figure out how did I made you so expressive."

If you had a face, you'd be making a wide-eyed look of terror, because the girl is once again reaching for her pair of pliers.

"WAIT! wait wait wait. Miss... Uh... You didn't tell me your name yet."

She stops her hand mid movement for a second, then she rests her arm on her side.

"My name is Iris. Iris Wilson."

"... That's a cute name! W-Why did you make me, Iris?"

"Because I'M LONELY!"

"... Lonely? You don't live alone, do you? Where are your parents?"

"I've never met my parents. I've been with Hurley for as long as I can remember..."

Iris begins telling her story. How her father was the partner of the great detective Herlock Sholmes. How many mysteries they solved together. How her father entrusted the detective with his daughter and went to a far off place. How she compiles Herlock's adventures, past and present, into an acclaimed book series named after him. And how his adventures often take him overseas.

"So he just leaves you here alone? Aren't you, like, five?"

"I'm nine years old. And I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself, thank you very much!"

"Right, right. But you DO feel lonely..."

"I can't blame Hurley for going away on adventures. He can never happy when he's not solving some mystery. But I do feel lonely when he's away, so I like to pass the time by playing with the toys that I make."

That's the second time she called you a toy. You hate it, but you say nothing. It's best if you don't give her a reason to decapitate you. For now you'll just have to play along, until you can find a way out.

"And wouldn't it be better to play with me right now? I mean... If you take me apart, you don't know if you'll be able to replicate my... Expressiveness. Shouldn't you just enjoy me for what I am?"

There's a long pause while Iris considers. Then she let's out a loud yawn.

"... Maybe, but not right now. I'm sleepy..." She rubs her eyes. "I shouldn't have stayed up so late making you... I was so focused, I lost track of time..."

She reaches out for the spotlight above you (actually just a desk lamp) and turns it off with a click. Your eyes are too accustomed to the light, so you can't see anything in the dark anymore. You hear Iris getting up from her chair.

Is this it? Is she going to leave you there alone? Giving you a chance of escaping?

Of course not. You feel a familiar grip around you, and your feet leave the floor once more. This time you can't even see the ground bellow you in the dark, renewing your fear of falling. You hold on to her finger. Iris swings her arms while she walks, not knowing or caring about how dizzy she's making you.

She stops and holds you up in front of her. You hear a drawer being opened bellow you.

"Nighty-night!"

She releases you from her grip. For just a moment, you still hold on to her finger. But the sudden movement combined with your dizziness prove too much for you to handle. You lose your grip and plummet into the darkness bellow. You get ready for an impact that can come at any moment.

With a loud thump, you hit the bottom of the drawer. A sharp pain courses through your body. It's a lot less painful than you would expect, but it still hurts a lot. You're still reeling from the impact when Iris forcefully closes the drawer, a motion that sends you flying further in.

"... ouch..."

It doesn't seem like you're damaged in any way. Nothing's broken, and you can't even feel a scratch. Despite the pain, it looks like you were built pretty sturdy. This must be why Iris thinks she can be so careless with tossing you around.

After resting for a few minutes, you go about exploring the drawer. Feeling around in the dark, you find lots of machines and machine parts. You find your way towards the front of the drawer, but you find no holes or anything that you could use to escape. You make your way towards the back, going around any machine parts you find. The drawer is more densely packed towards the end. Soon you reach a point where you can't make progress on just the floor.

You try climbing a piece of machine that's blocking your way. Your weight triggers something, and the machine suffers a powerful jolt. You fall back on the floor right as the powerful sound of metal hitting metal echoed from the thing in front of you. You know you wouldn't have gotten out of it unscathed if you were caught in the middle of it.

Messing with those machines while not being able to see is a horrible mistake. You retrace your steps, back to the front of the drawer where is sparser and safer. Escape is not an option right now, you should just wait for Iris and not touch anything. Defeated, you lay down on the floor, trying to sleep.

You wanted to escape in the middle of the night, but you're trapped with no way out. What are you supposed to do? Accept your fate as Iris's toy? She said she made you to "act as if you were alive". What kind of games is she thinking about that would require her toy to act as if it were alive? After all you had to go through so far, your imagination can't come up with anything good. You won't accept this. You don't know what kind of life is waiting out there for you, but it has to be better than being a little girl's toy!

You lay there for what it feels like forever. Not once you caught even a wink of sleep. It doesn't look like you're even capable of sleeping. This will be a long night...
