Madeline’s arrival and subsequent unintentional termination had proven to be an unexpected boon for Jason. Had Franky alone disappeared, he would’ve been the prime suspect. He still was, to be sure, but with the rough and tumble Madeline in the mix, the investigators were equally interested in a version of the story where the girl had convinced the slightly more mild-mannered Franky to accompany her on some harebrained adventure around the city or, perhaps, the country. It was a long shot, but as long as Jason didn’t let on that he had a shrink ray, it was admittedly the far more likely scenario.

Ms. Jones rejected Jason’s every attempt to talk with her about her child or Madeline, and though Jason was a bit hurt by that (he always liked Ms. Jones) he understood the decision and eventually gave up on it. He did still have a few lingering regrets—chief among which being accidentally condemning two girls to a caustic end in his guts because of his lethargy. But through it all, Jason had to admit the biggest regret?

He didn’t take as much time savoring Franky’s flavor as he wanted to.

He’d need to test out the second law of Shrinkanomics sometime soon, and though babysitting was out, it wouldn’t be hard to find some unaccompanied women and girls around town willing to participate in a scientific study for the collective intellectual enrichment of humanity.
