*C-cough*… ***cough!***
Madeline had already picked up the rope in preparation for extraction when she heard it. The telltale sound of expelling improperly ingested liquid from one’s lungs. Her head snapped to the source—it was a click due east, or at least that’s what the military men in the movies her dad liked to watch would say. “Franky! Was that you? C’mon, give me a sign!”
“*H… help…!*”
Madeline wasted no time—rather than trudge painfully through ever more caustic slime, she took a running leap and dove into a breaststroke, covering more distance by swimming than she ever would on foot. “I’m comin’ Franks! Hold on for a little longer!” The choppy waves of the acid lake were difficult to surmount, but Madeline wasn’t a quitter, and before long she’d arrived at one of the stomach walls. Leaned against it and clutching her abdomen was Franky. Her hair was coming out, her skin was covered in pink welts, and she looked like absolute murder. But she was alive, and more remarkably, she had yet to suffer any permanent physical damage that Madeline could see.
Franky coughed a pitiful cough and looked up, her eyes mere slits as they beheld Madeline. And with a slow, thin, gentle smile, she spoke. “I… k-knew you’d come for me… *cough*… Mindy.”
Madeline rolled her eyes. “I think I’ll just keep that lip balm, I think. It’ll be the ‘saving your life *and* forgetting my name’ tax.”
The process of untying the rope from Madeline’s belly and retying it around both herself and Frank took an eternity to both girls, especially since Franky’s immobile body didn’t do much to help. Madeline had no idea how far along in the digestion process Franky was; all she knew was that she was racing against the clock, and the more time Franky spent in this hellhole, the less chance Madeline would have to secure her twenty dollars. Once the two were properly daisy-chained, only then did Madeline heave a mighty tug of the rope. “Okay, Jason! We’re ready to come out!” Madeline knew instinctively that there was no way he could hear her amid the bubbling gurgles of his stomach and the steady beating of his heart. But it felt nice to say nevertheless.
