Mati and two lamias

"You know what? I'm in," Mati said, his voice regaining its strength as he looked around the cozy, if slightly eccentric, living room. "I'll rent the house. I'll take it." He paused, glancing at Emily with a mix of lingering apprehension and amusement. "As long as I'm not part of the security deposit or the daily menu, I think this will be the best place I've ever lived."
He let out a small laugh, the tension finally bleeding out of his shoulders. The idea of living in a secluded house with two lamias was practically a dream for someone who preferred the company of circuit boards to crowds, and the sheer unpredictability of the last ten minutes had convinced him that life here would be anything but boring. He began to imagine the cable management in the attic, his mind already racing with the possibilities of the space.
"YAAAAAY! A new friend! A new friend!" Emily shrieked, her voice reaching a pitch that could have shattered glass. She didn't just cheer; she threw herself into a whirlwind of excitement, her long blue tail whipping around in frantic, happy circles that created a small breeze in the living room. She began to hop in place, her small hands clapping together with rhythmic thumps. "Mommy, he's staying! He's really staying! We can play games, and show him the garden, and—oh! I can show him where the best sun-spots are for napping!"
She zoomed toward Mati, stopping just inches from his face, her blue eyes wide and shimmering with an intensity that almost felt hypnotic. The sheer energy emanating from the young lamia was infectious, turning the previous terror of being swallowed into a distant memory. She looked like she wanted to hug him again, but she restrained herself, her tail twitching with an eagerness that threatened to knock over a nearby side table.
Emilia chuckled, her expression radiating a mixture of maternal pride and amusement. She glided away from the group, her massive red tail making a slow, rhythmic *shhh* sound as she navigated toward a heavy wooden desk in the corner of the room. With a graceful movement, she reached for a stack of thick, cream-colored parchment and a quill, her long nails clicking softly against the wood.
"Now, now, Emily, let's try not to knock over the lamp with all that excitement," Emilia cautioned gently, though her voice was laced with warmth. She began to write out the lease agreement in a flowing, elegant script, the ink glistening under the soft light of the room. "It is settled then. We shall have a new gentleman in the house. I must say, Mati, your composure is quite impressive. Most people would still be trembling after Emily's... enthusiastic greeting."
She looked over her shoulder, her blue eyes twinkling. "Once the paperwork is signed, we can get you settled. But first, I believe we have a priority: getting you into some dry clothes. I can't have my new tenant catching a cold in the middle of his first day."
"I... I think I'm okay for a few more minutes," Mati stammered, though he couldn't stop shivering as the moisture in his clothes began to cool. He looked at the elegant script Emilia was producing on the parchment, then back at the exuberant young lamia who had almost turned him into a midnight snack. The sheer absurdity of the situation—signing a legal document while dripping in digestive enzymes and surrounded by giant reptiles—should have been a dealbreaker, but for Mati, it felt like the start of a grand adventure. "Actually, the attic first might be better. If I can just see the space and know it's real, I can handle the cold."
"Very well, if you insist on the attic first," Emilia said, her voice trailing off with a soft, indulgent laugh. She set the quill down, the lease agreement waiting patiently on the desk. With a fluid motion, she turned and began to glide toward the staircase, her massive red coils undulating across the floor with that heavy, rhythmic *shhh* sound. "Though I must warn you, the stairs are a bit steep, and I suspect your current attire is making a rather distinct sound with every step."
Emily didn't wait for an invitation. She zoomed past her mother, her blue tail whipping through the air with a playful flick. "Come on, Mr. Mati! Come on! I'll show you the way!" she chirped, her voice echoing in the hallway. She paused for a split second to look back at him, her blue eyes shimmering with a mixture of childlike glee and lingering curiosity, as if she were still half-expecting him to be a snack that might try to escape.
Mati followed behind them, his wet shoes making a rhythmic *squish-squash* sound that seemed to announce his presence to the entire house. He shivered as a sudden draft hit his damp skin, but his eyes were fixed on the ceiling, calculating the vertical space. As they ascended the stairs, the smell of old wood and beeswax grew stronger, mixing with the faint, exotic scent of the two lamias. He felt small between them—a skinny human sandwiched between two powerful predators—but the warmth in the house and the genuine excitement in Emily's voice made the tension feel more like an adventure than a threat.
The climb to the attic felt like a procession of opposites: the heavy, rhythmic *shhh* of Emilia’s massive red coils, the erratic, energetic flicking of Emily’s blue tail, and the rhythmic *squish-squash* of Mati’s drenched footwear. As they reached the top of the stairs, Emilia pushed open a heavy oak door that groaned on its hinges, revealing a space that took Mati's breath away.
The attic was an expansive, dusty sanctuary. Beams of golden sunlight pierced through a series of large, slanted skylights, illuminating motes of dust that danced in the air. The ceiling was vaulted, with thick, ancient rafters of dark wood crossing overhead. It was a cavern of quiet, broken only by the distant chirping of birds outside. Mati stepped inside, his eyes immediately scanning the perimeter. He noticed the thick insulation of the walls and the way the air felt naturally cool—perfect for preventing a server from overheating during a heavy render.
"It's... it's perfect," Mati whispered, his voice echoing slightly in the vast space. He walked toward the center of the room, his wet shoes leaving dark patches on the wide-planked floor. He could already see exactly where his main workstation would go, tucked into the corner where the light was indirect but the airflow was strongest. He felt a surge of genuine excitement that almost made him forget the lingering dampness of his clothes.
