To think, a few hours ago you woke up in a normal bed in a normal flat, having completely forgotten about how someone could crush that bed in their fist like nothing. Shaking the thought from your head, you walk over to the miniature doorbell embedded in the wall just above the ground, at a perfect height for you, and press it. A moment later, you hear muffled footsteps growing closer, rising over the din.
The handle shuffles and turns, and the door creaks open, releasing the lights and sounds of a party into the night while a woman, twenty storeys tall, appears in the doorway. Natalie glances around at her own height, before lowering her gaze, finding you. She smiles, and steps out onto the doorstep.
You stumble back slightly as a black sneaker that could flatten a truck lands in front of you, steadying yourself as the second shoe lands further away as the woman begins to crouch. You find your words just as she leans over, catching herself with a hand against the ground, a few lilliputian metres to your side.
“Happy Birthday, Nat! It’s been a minute,” you yell up at her. She tilts her head and reaches down with her other hand, stopping just before grabbing you with two fingers and a thumb. You nod. She clamps the digits around you and lifts you with ease towards her face. “A bit more than a minute! And thanks,” She chuckles, taking a closer look at you as she stands to her full height. “How’s it been?”
You both chat while she brings you into her home, new haircuts, new neighbours, some shared nostalgia for when you lived in the same neighbourhood thrown in. The corridor is crowded with guests of both sizes, a few familiar faces among the throng. You notice the people your size are mostly scattered across tables and perching on gulliverian palms and shoulders, but you spot a few lounging on a paper plate, surrounded by crackers topped with cream cheese and salmon. You lose sight of them as Nat brings you into the living room.
She clears her throat, and drops you into her other palm, where you seat yourself comfortably. “So, you already know how lillies are eaten here, remember that café, last time? And we did get a few boxes of Ingredient lillies to go through first, Skye even brought her own, but we definitely didn’t order enough.” She brings her palm down to a table, letting you climb down into the white tablecloth, and bends down to be at eye level with you. “Point is, guests are on the menu tonight. Anyone can opt out, obviously, red wristbands over there,” she points at a ‘small’ tupperware tucked between a plate of sausage rolls a bowl of olives, “but yeah, just… enjoy the party and try not to get eaten too quickly, I want to do something later, with the cake. And group photos. Or do get eaten, I can’t stop you. Or them,” she gestures behind her, at the other gulliverian guests.
She stands up, “anywhere else you want to check out, or should I just leave you to it? There’s a punch bowl over there, some snacks here, a bowl of lillies over on that end, and Skye’s doing some games or tricks or something at the other table, I’ll take you there if you’d like?”
