Lucy deserves a chance; she should cook as well
As you look how sad Lucy is of not being able to provide for you as your chosen caretaker, an idea pops in your mind: what if she cooks food as well, even if just a tiny bit? Sure she told you that she is not a great cook, but this could either be because she doesn't trust her skills...or she actually is objectively bad. Either way, there only one way to be sure. And you're willing to risk it, knowing that the worst that could happen is a bad meal. Besides, there is nothing stopping you from eating from her mom's cuisine.
Certain of taking this route, no regrets, you call María, and she says:
"¿Que pasa Denis? ¿Necesitas algo?"("What's wrong Denis? Do you need anything?")
When you tell her your proposal, the woman open her eyes, surprised. After you're done, the woman looks at you worried, and tells you:
"Sabes, mi hija está siendo honesta al reconocer que no es buena cocinera. Nunca tuvo mayor interés en aprender de mí cuando yo lo intente: siempre tenía en mente a los chicos de su edad cuando llego a la adolescencia, y ella era un poco...flojita antes de ello. Ha mejorado un poco, pero así más por necesidad que por pasión. No puedo siempre estar preparando comida y haciendo la limpieza todos los días; después de todo, tengo trabajos que hacer para tener la moneda para nosotras dos."("You know, my daughter is being honest in admitting that she is not a good cook. She never had much interest in learning from me when I tried: she always had boys her age in mind when she reached adolescence, and she was a bit ...lazy before that. She has improved a bit, but more out of necessity than passion. I can't always be preparing food and cleaning every day; after all, I have jobs to do to have the currency for ourselves two.")
"Even if that's the case...I'm still willing to give her a chance. If goes bad, you wouldn't mind sharing a bit for me, right?" I answer confidently. Lucy might not have been the best before, but there was potential...and she has shown to care for you. So, why not accept to try her food?
When María notices your willingness to still try her daughter's handiwork, her worried face shifts to a happier, and says:
"Estas haciendo esto porque notaste el verdadero carácter de mi hija, ¿verdad?"("You're doing this because you saw my daughter's true character, right?")
"Indeed. She might be a bit...sloppy, but...she is kind and caring at heart. Besides, she's never going to improve if she does not try in the first place.", you reply, smiling.
María smiles as well, and says:
"En eso tienes razón, jovencito. Muy bien, le diré a mi hija. Si después de todo te arrepientes, podrás comer un poquito de mi comida: que seas generoso no significa que tengas que sufrir hambre en esta situación particular. Eres nuestro invitado después de todo."("You're right about that, young man. Very well, I'll tell my daughter. If you're sorry after all, you can eat a little of my food: being generous doesn't mean you have to go hungry in this particular situation. You're our guest after all.")
You nod, and observe how the mother tells her daughter about your proposal. When Lucy hears this, she looks at you, and asks:
"¿En serio? ¿Estás dispuesto...a probar como cocino? ¿Incluso tras que yo y mi mamá te advertimos?"("Really? Are you willing...to try how I cook? Even after me and my mom warned you?")
When you nod her back, she can barely avoid to tear up in joy. With shiny eyes, she tells you:
"Muchas gracias...por estar dispuesto a confiar en mí. Hare...lo mejor que pueda."("Thank you very much...for being willing to trust me. I'll do...the best I can.")
Then, she stands up, and soon, the two giantesses start to prepare the meals. What you witness is hard to describe: movements that on normal size are nothing to notice become titanic and air splitting to you. The sounds of the food cooking up turn up by eleven to your tiny ears: thankfully you're able to very quickly become use to the noise.
After several minutes, the fires of the stoves end, and María puts on the table two plates and the forks and knives necessary for her and her daughter to split up and cut the food. Both're Mexican preparations, which should be expected. And both are indeed very similar: the main difference being Lucy's preparation is a bit...burned to say the least.
The difference in expertise is visible to the eye, and Lucy knows this. As the girls sits down, her face is low. She knows that despite her best efforts, she still ended up ruining it. Thankfully, not only did she prepared a lot less food that her mom, María had prepared enough to feed both of them now and later.
When the two sit, María puts in front of you a coin, which would serve as a makeshift plate. When you're all done, María says:
"Muy bien, Denis. Te cortaremos pedazos para que puedas comer. Espero que te guste."("Very good, Denis. We'll cut you into pieces so you can eat. I hope you like it.")
Lucy nods, agreeing with her mother's plan, grabbing her fork and knife and cuts a tiny piece out of her meal. María does it as well, and the two leave the piece in your "plate".
Having no fork and knife for your size, you're left with the only option available: your hands.
You first grab Lucy's piece, and bring it close to your mouth. Both ladies watch your actions, wanting to see your reaction.
As you taste Lucy's piece, your face becomes sour. It tastes...burned and sour. Not tasty at all.
When she sees your reaction, the girl face becomes even dourer, and says:
"Veo que no te gustó...sabía que no me resultaría. ¿Que estaba pensando cuando acepte hacer esto?"("I see you didn't like me…I knew it wouldn't work for me. What was I thinking when I agreed to do this?")
"Perhaps...but one must start from somewhere. It was a nice try nonetheless. You deserve to be commended that much at the very least." you say to her. It takes her surprised face to remind you that she does not know English. Dammit! You scream internally.
Then, you look up to her mom, and tell her:
"You heard me at least. ¿Could you tell Lucy my words? Also, tell her I'm willing to aid her improve. I was a good cook back home, and I know several things about food she could use."
The woman smiles, and after nodding to you, speaks to her daughter. When Lucy hears your words, her face lights up again, and tells you:
"Muchas gracias por tu oferta, Denis. Prometo que estaré atenta a tus lecciones."("Thank you very much for your offer, Denis. I promise I'll be attentive to your lessons.")
After you nod back to her, all of you start eating a last the main dish. It tastes very good, and is quite filling as well. After several bites of yours, you fell full despite still having some left.
You're not the only one: both of the ladies end up as well, a few moments after you.
After this, you watch them lift up the dirty plates and utensils, and cleaning them up in the dishwasher. Looking them do it is another show as well to you.
Then, after that is done, María looks at you, and says:
"Contacté a la Jefa del Cártel. Ella acepto a reunirse contigo mañana en la mañana. Ella dijo que es necesario que vengas acompañado: quiere que llegues lo antes posible después del amanecer."("I contacted the Chief of the Cartel. She agreed to meet with you tomorrow morning. She said that you need to come accompanied: she wants you to arrive as soon as possible after sunrise.")
You nod, and watch as María tells Lucy the news. After a small nod, she gets close to the table, and opens her palms. When you climb up and sit in them, the girl walks to her room.
When you both enter it, she says:
"Muy bien, ahora que ambos tenemos el estómago lleno, tenemos que ver que haremos ahora."("Alright, now that we both have full stomachs, we have to see what we'll do next.")
You nod, and Lucy looks up, frowning. She must be thinking something. You can only wait to see the result.
