“Um, Mayu,” Nana nervously muttered, looking at her feel in humility. The young girl looked at her friend and family member, seeing her obviously troubled. Kouta and Yuka left to do their choirs, but Lucy remained, watching Nana carefully out of the corner of her eye. Other then Kouta, Nana was the only other person that knew her secret. In truth, Nana knew more then Kouta. That made her a potential enemy if she deiced to blab to everyone about her murderous past. Personally, Lucy didn’t care what the rest of the family thought of her. The only person besides Kouta on good terms with her was Mayu and if she decided to hate or fear her like the rest of humanity, Lucy could live with it. However, if Mayu and Yuka tried to get Kouta to kick her out, then she’d have a problem. Nothing mattered to her right now, except continuing to be with Kouta, no matter what.
Nana knew Lucy was watching her, but that didn’t bother her. Let her watch, soon she wouldn’t be watching, but instead listening. “Mayu, I’d like to talk to Lucy, could you start scrubbing the floors without me?”
“Of coarse, but what do you have to talk to Lucy about?” Mayu asked, getting no answer from Nana. Recollection struck Mayu, as she remembered the night a few days ago when she first met Nana in the cemetery and brought her home. No sooner had Nana walked through the door, did she attack Lucy, who back then had been Nyuu, claiming that she was a murder. Mayu nodded in understanding about why Nana wanted to talk with Lucy. The only reason must be so she could apologize again to her for thinking such a horrendous and crazy thought. My smiled and took both of Nana’s hands in hers.
“Don’t worry, take as much time as you need t apologize. I’ll start without you.”
“Th-thank y-you,” Nana stammered, having no idea what Mayu was talking about. She left, giving Nana and Lucy a brief wave as she left. Nana waved back, but Lucy just crossed her arms over her chest. Once Mayu was gone, Nana faced Lucy, suddenly feeling very nervous. In the company of the humans, she knew Lucy wouldn’t do anything, But now that they were alone…
“Come,” Lucy ordered. Turning her back to Lucy, she walked into the kitchen and stopped at the sink. Nana shuffled forward, joining Lucy at the sink, where she was already washing the plates. She started slowly, having never washed plates before. Most of her meals had either been things she stole from people she killed or the people themselves. Eventually she got into a rhythm, washing the plates with a wet rag, and then placing them to the side to dry. Nana kept her mouth shut, just watching Lucy’s clean.
“Uumm,” Nana started saying, not knowing where to start. She wanted to ask Lucy so many questions, like how she survived, why she helped her, why had she come back and so more. The questioned filled her mind and she didn’t know where to start. Unfortunately, none of her questions would be answered because instead, Lucy asked her own questions.
“I know you’ve never killed before with your vectors. If you had, I would have noticed it during our battle a few weeks ago. You were slow to strike, reluctant to hurt me. If you’d ever used them to kill you wouldn’t have hesitated, you would of torn out my heart the first time you attacked. I’m certain you’ve never killed with your vectors, but I can’t be certain if you have with your stomach,” Lucy slowly said, speaking coolly and calmly. Nana shuddered; it was an eerily similar voice to the one she’d used when they first met. Although, Nana sensed something different in her tone this time. When they first spoke, Lucy was colder then steel and without compassion. Lucy wasn’t speaking warmly, but her voice was only lukewarm instead of frigid.
“My stomach?” Nana said, placing one hand on her belly filled with soumen.
“Yes your stomach, the thing that can turn a full grown man into a nutrient filled mush. The thing where you can end a life. Where we put our food or our enemies.” Lucy’s eyes narrowed at Nana, then a cool smile formed on her face. “You’ve obviously never used it before, but I doubt you haven’t felt the hunger before, knowing at your mind, making the sight of human flesh look irresistible?”
“I’d…I’d…I’d never eat someone!” Nana cried out, her voice breaking as she denied her predatory nature. She had felt it before, but she had fought it, mostly because the only person she ever saw was papa and she could never do that to him. So, she fought it and learned to hate it, focusing on the pain and the loneness she faced in the bad place where she was put. But now she wasn’t in pain and she wasn’t lonely, so she had nothing to focus on. The hunger came now, sometimes lasting for only a second, sometimes an hour. It was horrible because when she felt it, everyone looked like food, even her family.
Lucy’s eyes softened, knowing what it felt like to hunger. She should of felt pity for this girl, but known came. How could you pity someone for feeling something hardwired into their brain by nature?
“But you’ve thought about eating. I can see it on your face. That’s why for everyone’s sake, you have to eat someone. May I suggest you go out tonight and try and find a bum, they might be filthy, but they won’t be missed. If you hold your nose when you take the first swallow, they can actually taste…”
“Nonononoonono!” Nana cried, covering her ears with her hands. “I’m not going to eat anyone!”
“You will because we all do. It’s hard to fight to urge to kill with the vectors, but its possible, you’ve proven that. But the hunger, that can only be pushed aside for so long before it over takes you. Do you want to bottle it in until you lash out at the first meal? Even if it’s a child? Even if it’s Mayu? Even if it’s Kouta.” Lucy gritted her teeth. She could live with Nana eating anyone, except Kouta. She’d protect him from everything, even Nana.
“I can’t,” Nana whimpered, arms falling to her side and tears welling in her eyes. “If I killed even one person, I’d never be able to be happy again.”
“Who said that we deserve to be happy?”
“…..”
Lucy left. All the plates had been washed and were set to dry. She’d told Nana what she needed to do and she’d make sure she did it. No danger would befall her family, not even from one of the members of said family.
