Family was such a foreign concept to Lucy. Growing up in an orphanage, separated from her mother, Lucy never knew what being in a family was like. She’d seen them, of course, right before snuffing out their lives. At first it hadn’t been entirely malicious, she just needed a place to stay. But there was that one house, she had heard the children laughing and enjoying themselves. It was after one of her days with Kouta and, not knowing when she’d see him again, she was left feeling lonely and bitter. She ended up swallowing every last….. Lucy didn’t want to dwell on it. She had little remorse for her most recent killings, all of them scientists and armed lab personal. Back then though she’d killed quite indiscriminately. Did they really deserve to die just because they’d laughed? Just because they had happiness in their lives and she had none? It could have very easily been Kouta’s family if she hadn’t met him outside of her dog’s grave… Not that Kouta’s family was spared her wrath. Lucy bit her lip. Painful memories she wished she could forget, erase, or do over. The killing seemed quite natural when Kouta was out of the equation. After he had touched her life though she couldn’t help but question her actions. After fleeing from the train the night of his families’ murders she reverted back into what could best be described as a heartless killer. Now that Kouta was back in her life though she was once more forced to reflect. If only she hadn’t over reacted. If only she hadn’t allowed Yuka’s existence to get to her. She could have told Kouta the truth, her feelings for him and about her lack of a home. Things could have turned out differently. If only she hadn’t killed his sister and father, they were the only two murders she truly regretted. From the moment her vectors tore apart his sister and her lips worked their way up his father’s torso to today she’d never stopped regretting what she’d done.
She couldn’t take back what she did. Yet somehow, beyond all reason, she was back in Kouta’s home. Her home. Part of HIS family. Her family. Of course besides Kouta only Mayu and Wanta seemed to accept her unconditionally. Nana remained ever suspicious, eyeing Lucy warily, and Yuka remained a rival. She had been the catalyst that caused both Lucy and Kouta so much pain. She had also won over his affection with time. Human garbage undeserving of his love. It was love Lucy would never receive. She knew and accepted that fact. He had some love for the child she used to be, as well as Nyuu, not for the girl now sitting down to lunch with him. She didn’t deserve Kouta’s love, she knew that, but neither did Yuka. Lucy feared that, at most, all she could do was tolerate the girl. So that was their family. Were certain family members supposed to fear and distrust you? Were you supposed to hate some of them? Lucy didn’t think so but as long as she had Kouta… perhaps not his love, but his presence, that was enough.
They all took their seats at the table. Mayu was directly across from Kouta and Lucy was to his side. Kouta had a lot he wanted to say but he didn’t know how to go about it without his ‘family’ freaking out. How did he explain that Nyuu, the girl they’d all come to know and love, was a serial killer with split personalities? Nana knew the truth. Mayu did too to some extent though Kouta was unaware. Yuka was the only one who didn’t have a clue and it was Yuka’s reaction Kouta was most afraid of. They all began to eat their soumen. Lucy just stared at her empty bowl thoughtfully occasionally looking up to shoot people piercing stares. They weren’t cruel or threatening, simply calculating.
Kouta put a hand on Lucy’s shoulder, “You sure you don’t want any. I’m not that hungry, we could share.”
“I’ll pitch in too!” Mayu piped up.
Lucy blushed, “I’m fine…. Thank you Kouta… and….”
“Mayu.” The cheery runaway reminded her.
“…. Thank you Mayu.” The truth was Lucy wasn’t hungry at all. Nearly a dozen fully-grown and well-muscled men were fueling her. Diclonius could easily devour a human without much change to their figure. Their stomachs were bone crushingly tight though their inhabitants tended to survive for several minutes. Digestion was mercifully fast and most of her meal was gone. At least the actual bodies, she still had a large number of calories she’d yet to burn up.
Nana just stared, a small frown on her lips. She wasn’t too wild about the lab either but papa had always been good to her. She would never dream of killing a guard or one of the scientists. Lucy though was another story. She was a bad person most of the time. Nana had never tasted human flesh despite the attraction yet Lucy ate regularly. Nyuu was kind but Lucy was a monster. Still…. Lucy had saved her life. Perhaps there was some good in her after all buried deep down.
No one chose to talk. There was a lot to talk about but the ‘family’ ate in silence only speaking up when they needed something passed. Kouta cleared his throat, “So, what’s on the agenda today?”
“Just chores.” Yuka responded, today wasn’t a school day. Kouta felt he should do something for Lucy’s home coming but he didn’t know what. In truth she’d only been gone a few days. He felt he should at least talk with her alone. He wanted to ask her so many questions. What happened after she left him on those steps? She’d disappeared only to wind up on their doorstep completely hornless. Who exactly has been pursuing her? Would they come again? Was Nyuu gone forever? Was she going to stay for good this time? Would she accept the others as family? Should he reveal their history to them or should it remain a personal secret? They were all questions Kouta wanted to ask her, “Ny-… I mean, Lucy. How about we clean the dishes after lunch?”
Her blush returned once more, it was quite common when dealing with Kouta, “Sure.”
“Nana and I can scrub the floors near the entrance!” Mayu volunteered.
“I can do the windows.” Yuka spoke up half-heartedly.
“Than it’s settled.” Kouta nodded.
The gang finished off their lunch in record time. Rising Kouta collected everyone’s bowls, “Right, lets get our chores out of the way and then we can have some fun in our free time.”
“Sounds like a plan!” Mayu giggled.
Frowning Yuka left to get a sponge and soapy water. Nana seemed hesitant to leave as if something were on her mind.
