Kouta had followed Yuka to make sure she wasn’t upset. She’d been quite tense all of lunch and not her usual self. After she assured him that she was fine, and any further pestering would get him slapped, he returned to the kitchen. He was surprised to find the dishes already washed. Lucy was no where to be seen. Frowning he decided to hunt her down. Before starting his search though he got out a clean bucket and filled it with hot water.
Lucy sat on the front step of the entrance way leading into the spacious house. She stared down the walkway to the gateway that led to the main street. Only an hour ago she’d been on the other side of the gateway wondering if Kouta truly wanted to see her again. Now she was a member of his family. Lucy stared at the many trees and shrubs within the inner courtyard. She closed her eyes and listened to the chirping of birds. She enjoyed the sound, she’d always been fond of animals………. It was so peaceful here.
A warm hand fell onto her shoulder. Normally she hated human contact; her first impulse would be to shrug off the hand or to simply kill its owner. But the arm on her shoulder felt familiar and filled her with warmth rather than disgust. She didn’t need to turn around to know who it was, “Kouta.” She whispered.
She heard the sound of water trickling. She turned around to see Kouta wringing a towel, turning it from soaking wet to merely damp. He sat down beside her and placed the a water filled bucket to his left, “Here.” He folded the towel and raised it to her face.
She leaned back slightly, “Really Kouta, I’m fine. The injury is already quite old. It won’t get infected.”
“… I know.” Kouta said softly, “but there’s a good bit of dried blood. Let me clean it off for you.” Lucy didn’t resist. She just stared at him, her eyes brimming with emotion only Kouta would ever see. He was so kind to her even though a few days ago his long lost memory had fully returned when she’d started slaughtering and devouring the task force sent after her by the facility. Yet here he was gently washing her forehead where her once hated horns used to protrude from her head. He slowly rubbed away watching her for any sign of pain or discomfort. The light scrubbing made her neglected wounds feel a bit numb and sore, but it was a good kind of pain. He dunked the towel in the bucket once more and, withdrawing it, squeezed it tightly causing the water within to seep out and plummet back inside tinting it red. He looked at the discolored water with a small frown on his face, though he didn’t say anything Lucy saw the sadness in his eyes.
Kouta was so nice, so thoughtful, even after all the pain she’d caused him. He was the only human who’d ever shown her any shred of decency besides Aiko. Aiko had died at the hands of the facility. They’d cornered the two girls. Aiko had been wearing Lucy’s hat, the one Kouta had given her, and she’d been mistaken for a diclonius. Nearly a dozen bullets had pierced her flesh. Lucy had promised Kurama she’d go quietly if he only saved her. Aiko died a few days later. It was then that she finally condemned all of humanity, decided to wipe them from the face of the earth and to make Kurama’s life a living hell. She’d spent years being a guinea pig until escaping; she left the researcher alive only so that she could pursue his loved ones later. He was dead though now and she had no excess hatred for Nana nor did she feel the need to punish humanity for the death of her second human friend. Her puppy, Kouta, and Aiko had all been taken away from her because of the world’s unrelenting cruelty…. but now she’d been reunited with the one she cared for most and he had accepted her with open arms. His very presence was intoxicating. She had to fight to keep herself from leaning in for their second kiss.
She shouldn’t have come, she knew that, but she couldn’t help herself. Her very presence endangered Kouta and the members of his household. By remaining she might once more bring violence into Kouta’s life. She had tried to walk away, out of his life for good, after waking up in his home. But then she’d black out and then she’d wake up in the Inn again. She’d lost all resolve the night on those steps when Kouta had hugged her from behind. She didn’t want to live in this hellish world anymore without him by her side. If that brought the research facilities agents to his doorstep…….. It didn’t matter. She’d protect him from the facility…… and Nana, and anyone else who might try to do him harm.
Kouta leaned in gently pressing the damp cloth to her scalp once more. Lucy closed her eyes. Unconsciously she let her vectors extend. They snaked their way behind the thoughtful boy and embraced him so softly he didn’t even detect their presence. When she realized what she was doing she quickly recalled them.
“Does it hurt?” Kouta asked softly.
“No… thank you.”
“Are you feeling well? You didn’t eat….. Is it bec-……” Kouta’s voiced trailed off and he looked away a little flustered. He’d seen at least one pair of bucking legs disappear down her throat when they were back on the bridge. It brought back another painful memory involving his father but he pushed it aside.
Lucy bowed her head, unresponding. His hand shaking slightly he calmed it and lightly placed it on her head, “I think you’re good.” He told her quietly. He looked into the bucket of water deciding it wasn’t that red, “No, wait a second.” He lifted her face upward by placing a hand under her chin and made a show of critically examining her face, “Hmm, looks like I didn’t get it all.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, your face is still dirty!” He reached a hand in and splashed her with water from the bucket. Her face was soaked. Kouta smiled and laughed lightly. Lucy lunged at him. He was expecting to go to the ground like he had all those years ago. Instead as soon as her arms wrapped around him she lost momentum.
“Oh.” Kouta was a bit surprised by her reaction but he adapted quickly. He returned the hug and gently patted her back. He could feel her heaving in his arms, “I’m sorry Lucy!” He started quickly.
“Don’t be.” They were tears of joy, not anger. She was thrilled that even now he could treat her as his old childhood friend and not just some ‘creature’ to take pity on. Finally she broke the hug, she composed herself. She didn’t normally allow such emotions to control her. Hate, rage, sure, but not joy.
They took a walk around the inner courtyard. Lucy explained to Kouta what had happened to her after they parted ways on the stone steps. She explained what had happened to her second horn, the confrontation, and who the armed men chasing her really were. Kouta, though he looked intimidated, took it all in stride.
“Is Nyuu gone?” He asked, “Have you….. made a full recovery?” He missed the loveable naïve Nyuu but he also didn’t want to hear that Lucy might have suffered permanent brain damage.
“I don’t know, only time will tell. I haven’t had any blackouts since that day though.”
“I see….. that’s good.”
Kouta didn’t notice Yuka watching them from a distance. Lucy felt the girl’s eyes on them but said nothing. If only Yuka wasn’t in the picture. Lucy couldn’t help but stew. Even when they were children it had been that girl who tore them apart…… No, she couldn’t shift the blame. She was responsible for what happened, she knew. But she just couldn’t help but feel some resentment towards the girl.
“Lucy, would you like to come to school with us during the weekdays or hang out here?” Kouta asked. They had tried taking her once as Nyuu with bad results.
“I think staying here for a while out of the public’s eye would be for the best.” Lucy explained.
Kouta nodded his agreement. He knew he should ask her about their past and if they should reveal it to the others. Yuka and Mayu would soon pick up on the fact that he and Lucy had history together besides the time he spent with Nyuu. He opened his mouth to speak but quickly closed it. No, it was too early, too painful to talk about with Lucy, let alone his other housemates. If either girl asked him about his relationship to Lucy he could just tell them she was an old childhood friend.
“I think the others are probably done with their chores. Do you know how to play checkers?”
“No, will you teach me?” the girl asked.
Kouta smiled invitingly, “Of course! Lets go get the others.”
