“Thanks so much for coming to the Wicca Club, you guys!” The bright voice belonged to Candace Evergreen, Head Maiden of the club. She was a straw-haired girl wearing a wide assortment of colors resembling a rainbow: sparkling antlers, a teal runic shawl, a sequin tee, and it looked like she’d dunked her face in a vat of glitter.
“Uh, I think you mean the Wicca And Occult Club.” The low and raspy voice belonged to Avril Darkness (her legal name), as she sulked at the club room table. Avril looked like she owned the color black: black lipstick, eyeshadow, and impossibly long eyelashes framing icy black eyes like limpid tears. Her skull-covered dress draped down to her black stilettos.
The third in the clubroom, Bob Glendenning, just rolled his eyes. “I can’t believe I’m missing the costume party for this.” He adjusted his Mario hat and fake mustache, returning to his Accounting textbook. He grabbed another chocolate from the bright purple pumpkin-shaped bowl of Halloween candy on the table. “How long is this going to take?”
“Ugh,” Avril said. “Nobody’s forcing you to be here. Take your stupid bargain-basement Mario costume to the party, see if I care.”
“Like you even need a costume. You dress like it’s Halloween every day, Margaret.”
“WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL ME, ROBERT?!”
“Guys, guys! Hey!!” Candace waved her arms. “Come on! We can catch the party later, okay? Let’s do magic!!”
“That’s legally not my name anymore, you piece of…” Avril spat. Bob didn’t even look up.
“Guyyssssssssss,” Candace pleaded, “Come onnnnn. It’ll be fun! I proooommiiiiise!”
“Ugh. Fine. What’s the spell.” Avril crossed her arms.
“It’s a growth spell!” Candace beamed. “It’ll make us really big! Then we’ll crash the party!”
“Woah, girl, a growth spell? What kind of growth?”
“Here, look!”
Candace untied her leather satchel, covered in wolf stickers, and pulled out a green notebook with the hand-written title “Magic Notes! By Candace the Witch ♥️” She opened it to a hand-written page: “Growth Spell”, complete with doodles of the ingredients.
“I found this one online!” She continued, “It’s really easy and it works on multiple people! Basically it’s a Hecatian transmutation spell! It takes basic stuff: Nightingale feathers, yew branches, chestnuts -”
Avril interrupted. “No way. This’ll never work.”
“W-what do you mean?? Of course it’ll work! It calls upon the growth powers of Danu! Plus, it has so many 5-star reviews!”
“Ugh, you Wiccans.” Avril rolled her eyes. “Check this out.” She reached into her black handbag and pulled out a gnarled, leather-bound tome. On its face was a horrifying skull with fangs and pink cat ears. It was titled “NEKO-NOMIKON: Hexes of the Old Ones. Translation by Antoine R”.
“...Ignore the cat stuff. This is the real deal.” She opened it to an aged yellow page: “Growth Hex.”
“This is a real growth hex. It channels the Old One, Mac’RoThulhu, whose blood-star galaxy aligns with ours during Halloween.”
Bob snorted. “The only growth I care about is compound interest.” He grabbed another handful of candies from the purple pumpkin. “Aren’t you two tired of casting spells that never work?”
“Robert!” Avril snapped. “Enough, or I’ll grow myself and squash you.”
“Maybe I’m into that.”
“Oh my god guuyyyyssss!” Candace whined. “It’s Halloween! Can’t we work togetherrr?? We’re all gonna be giant and we’re gonna eat all the Halloween candy, okay??”
“You can’t think of anything better to do as a giant?” Bob said. “Like squashing my Accounting professor?”
Candace huffed and arranged the ingredients on the table. “Anyway - look, all we have to do is chant these words! I’ll get us started!” She clasped her hands and intoned:
“O autumn night, so full of fright
We beg for height, our moon-lit plight…”
“Nope,” Avril said. “We’re not casting your dumb Wiccan spells again. Ugh, we’re doing this properly. God, why am I the only one at this school who likes the occult!” She drew a quick pentagram on the table and placed her ingredients: a blood vial, rat bones, and spider molts.
“Mighf’tee K’omm G’nal
Kort’uun Kos’thon Alieigh”
Candace side-eyed her and raised her own voice:
“LIKE THE ACORN SPROUTS,
PLEASE HEAR OUR SHOUTS!”
Avril returned her glare.
“LE’EG PLAKH THAKGH
GORAMNA MAC’ROTHULHU!!”
Bob shoveled candy into his mouth.
Suddenly, as the girls finished chanting, light erupted from the table. With a bang, the room vanished.
They awoke on their backs. Dazed and struggling to their feet, they looked around the white expanse.
“Where are we…?”
“I don’t know…”
“Look!” Candace pointed to an enormous purple wall. “Is that - the candy bowl!?”
“Oh my god.” Avril gasped. “It worked… Kind of.”
“What the fuck?” Bob said. “This can’t be real. This is a magic trick, right?”
“Let’s climb it! Then we’ll eat mountains of candy! Oh, this is the best Halloween ever!”
One exhausting climb later, the trio stood atop the rim, overlooking a colorful landscape of shining candy wrappers.
“So. Much. Candy!!” Candace squealed and dived right in, disappearing in the mound.
“Candace! That’s dangerous!” Avril called out.
But she emerged from the wrappers moments later. “Come on! This is so fun! I’m gonna slide down a Twizzler!”
“This is crazy,” Bob said, “but I’m not passing up all this candy.” He jumped in after her.
“Ugh,” Avril groaned, “this is so not occult,” and followed.
~~~
Soon, they were sprawled atop a chocolate bar, their small bellies full.
“So, Avril…” Bob asked.
“What?”
“Since we’re screwed… How about that feel you promised?”
“Feel? What feel?”
“When I joined the club, duh. You said if I joined, I could touch your boobs.”
“What. The. Fuck.”
“And Candace’s.”
“WHAT!?” Candace turned to them. “You promised WHAT?”
Avril blushed. “I – I didn’t say that!”
“Wh- yes you did! Y-you said the club needed three members for funding, so even though I don’t care about magic, you’d let me touch your - and Candace’s -”
“Oh my GOD!” Avril shouted, covering her face. “I did NOT!”
“Avril!?” Candace shouted.
“It’s not what it sounds like!” Avril said. “I-I didn’t promise he could touch your -”
“Awww, Avril!” Candace smiled and pulled her into a hug. “I didn’t know! So you really do care about the Wicca Club!”
Avril, muffled in the hug, struggled to speak. “It’s... The Wicca and Occult Club…”
Meanwhile…
