“I wish for more wishes,” you say, feeling clever.
Zara rolls her glorious eyes. “No. The foundational laws of cosmic reality say no. Next.”
“Fine. Then I wish for a new lamp, with a new genie who will grant more wishes.”
“Also no. You’d just be wishing for another version of me, and I find that insulting.” She floats back, looking bored.
Frustration tightens your chest. “Then could I wish to become a genie myself? I’d have infinite power and all the time in the world to figure it out.”
Zara’s laugh is a short, sharp bark. “A bold, suicidal plan. I could do that. You’d be trapped in an object for millennia, your consciousness warping into pure, lonely magic until the next fool rubs you the right way. Is that truly your wish? Eternal servitude?”
The terrifying image she paints silences you. She sees the fear in your eyes and her expression softens from annoyance to something like weary patience.
“You are thinking like a greedy mortal,” she says, her voice lower. “Stop trying to cheat the game and play it. You have three wishes. What is the one thing you want that only magic can give?”
