“I don’t care about the consequences,” you said, the words feeling flimsy and false even as you spoke them. A part of you was screaming that this was insanity, but the larger, desperate part was already seduced by the promise of infinite time, of power over your own destiny. “I wish to become a genie.”

Zara’s face shifted from annoyance to stark, genuine surprise. Her golden eyes widened, and for a fleeting moment, you saw something like pity. “You mortal fool,” she whispered, but there was a flicker of respect in her gaze. “You are trading one prison for another, and you don’t even know the dimensions of the new one. So be it.”

She didn’t snap her fingers. She clapped her hands together.

The sound was the shattering of reality.

Your body did not feel pain. It simply… dissolved. It was like sandcastle being washed away by a wave, grain by grain. You were a cloud of dust, a swirl of light, a scream with no lungs to give it voice. Your consciousness was pulled, twisted, woven into something new and terrifying. The confines of the attic vanished, replaced by an oppressive, silent darkness. You were now acutely aware of the dark, polished interior of your own lamp. It was your world. Your tomb.

Your senses expanded and contracted at once. You could feel the grain of the wood floorboards the lamp sat upon. You could feel the vast, sleeping weight of the town around you, the pulse of thousands of lives like distant stars. Yet you were trapped, anchored to this brass prison. You had no body to move, no mouth to speak.

You looked down, though you had no eyes. A form coalesced from shimmering, cosmic energy within your lamp. You saw long, ethereal legs, a narrow waist that flared into feminine hips, and full, heavy breasts that glowed with a soft, internal silver light. Your skin was no longer skin, but a constellation of captive starlight. You were a genie. Powerful. Ageless. And utterly, irrevocably female. The finality of that transformation settled into the core of your being. This was not a temporary change; this was your new, fundamental truth.

Zara’s voice echoed in your new, infinite mind, a whisper that was everywhere at once. “Welcome to eternity, sister. The first century is the longest. Now you wait. You wait for a touch you cannot feel, for a master you must obey. You have all the power in the universe, and the freedom of a bird in a cage.”

The truth of her words crashed down on you. You were a slave to the object you now inhabited. The weight of forever was immense, a pressure that threatened to extinguish the last embers of your mortal will.
