Welcoming the Interns
Trampled Roses Chapter 4

A shadow fell over them then. Trish lifted her eyes. There was a man approaching them; a giant, of course, dressed all business-like, but relaxed, with no tie and the collar button undone. She thought his face looked friendly, but then he looked down upon them, and his expression changed to a rather strict one. She took in some more details; a pen tucked into his shirt pocket, a ring denoting his married status, a bluish stubble on his cheeks. He must have been in his mid-thirties and was in good shape.

Trish frowned. She'd thought men weren't allowed to enter the zone where the women dined. But he walked right in, unabashed, stepping rather carelessly between tables. And, she realized, his gaze really was focused on the two of them.

Olivia finished her smoothie and stood up right as the man stopped close to them. She fearlessly looked up at him. That was something Trish wanted to learn from her. Trish was easily intimidated by the giants around her; any time one of them walked nearby, she couldn't help but wonder how easy it would be for one of those expensive dress shoes to turn her into a bloody wet spot via a simple misplaced step. She pretended to stare at her unfinished lunch, but she really looked beyond it, at the massive wingtip the man wore. Pristine shoe. Expensive one.

"Interns? Parkins and Sher?" the man inquired above them. "Table sixteen?"

Olivia actively nodded. "Olivia Sher, that's me", she confirmed, though Trish wasn't sure the man could hear them. “And that’s Patricia Parkins”.

"Is this our boss?" Trish asked. Olivia shrugged.

"Right. Thought I'd give you a proper welcome", the man boomed from above.
