Let us begin.
Welcome to an alternative Earth. A shrinking virus swept across the globe. It only affects women. Some managed to avoid it, some only shrunk by an inch or a foot, others dwindled away to tiny sizes. Their lives have irreversibly changed.
In the wake of the shrinking virus, multiple tech and biosci startups emerged; they managed to reverse-engineer the virus to create various versions of shrinking technology. Just like the virus, the tech only works on women. Multiple brand names exist. Most are expensive. The cheaper ones tend to be less reliable, with effects often irreversible.
The legal systems have not yet adapted to tiny women becoming relatively commonplace. The legal status of shrunken ladies is often shaky and uncertain. They've become a vulnerable social minority. In some countries they're worse off than in others. Human trafficking issues are more important than ever before. At the same time, shrinktech is making an explosion on college campuses, as it becomes a source of entertainment in frathouses and classrooms alike.
Scientific studies show that shrinktech isn't exactly equal to shrinking virus; unlike the virus, it seems to make shrunken women more docile, subservient and meek. Some companies are trying to figure out why this is, with the goal of making strides in cognitive science.
As the society is changing, some women find themselves surrendering the positions they used to hold. Many have to completely rely on the men in their lives if they want to survive and persevere. For many of them, their lives and safety are worth more than their dignity. They are okay with being reduced to pets and toys, if it keeps them from becoming bloody stains on the meaty soles of their boyfriends, husbands and bosses.
And many of those men are only happy to trample the ladies into submission.
