Upon entering the room, Miriam immediately noticed that almost in the middle of it, in a section that was walled off with some kind of glass, there appeared to be a large decide that looked more like some sort of cannon than any medical device. But she said nothing as she followed Zuleima and greeted the various scientists that were there, most of them were some kinds of doctors, though others were clearly engineers in robotics or other hi-tech fields Miriam didn't wholly understand.
Zuleima took her measurements and then had her sign some papers, which she took a few minutes to read, but they turned out to be generic legal stuff for formalizing her giving consent to the experimentation. She wondered how her husband would react if her assets grew any bigger, and she also wanted to see your reaction.
'Poor Blaise probably won't even notice' She thought with a playful smile.
"Alright, everything's set" Zuleima said, snapping her out of her thoughts. Miriam could see that the various technicians were manipulating what looked like several computers or similar devices, making adjustments, and as the large cannon-like device lit up, she guessed that her first theory was likely true, that it was going to be used for this experiment.
"You know, I imagined that as a medical thing, this would be some kind of injection, or maybe some pill" Miriam commented.
"That is the end result for this, but for now it's difficult to reach stable results in those forms. This thing provides an easier way to achieve the general principle, and then we can use its data to perfect our research into making an easier form to administer it"
"Oh, alright" Miriam nodded. She couldn't shake off the feeling that this looked more like something out of sci-fi than real life, but she was standing right there, it was as real as it could get. Zuleima then instructed her to give her any electronic devices she carried, her cellphone, then she grabbed a sterilized syringe from a nearby tray and prepared what clearly looked like some kind of shot.
"Didn't you say that the injections would be developed later?" Miriam raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, this isn't part of the experiment itself, I mean, this is for monitoring your vitals" Zuleima explained "We developed these nanomachines in order to be able to check the test subjects' vitals in the least invasive way" She then saw the look in her friend's face and laughed a little "Relax, these things will only monitor things like your heartbeat and the chemicals in your blood, you're not going to become Terminator"
The joke worked and Miriam nodded in agreement. She had read about various things that were made possible by nanotechnology, and after you helped her understand some more about it, she found that there was nothing to fear, even though many other ladies her age believed wild claims such as them being used to brainwash people and other things. A few minutes after being injected with those, the technicians working on the computers checked that her vitals were all being read properly, after which Zuleima instructed her to enter the glass room. Miriam felt a little nervous since she was the only person in there, but she trusted her friend, who reassured her with a thumbs up, then she teased about her hips' size.
Zuleima then verified with her coworkers that everything else was clear and ready, then instructed them to begin the experiment. The large cannon-like device lit up more brightly than before, and Miriam could hear it gather energy as it powered up, in a way similar to how defibrillators charged up before each use. Then it aimed itself at her, once again making her tense up.
"Try to relax, stress would hinder your body's response" Zuleima said over a speaker, as the room was otherwise soundproofed. Miriam nodded and took a deep breath.
'This can't be worse than going to the dentist' She thought, and then, to get her mind off any further concerns, she tried to think of the day she'd spend at the beach with you. It worked, and her body relaxed, which Zuleima could verify for herself by looking at her vitals.
"One shot at full power!" She said, and then one of the technicians pushed a lever all the way up before pressing a large red button. Miriam could see that various parts of the cannon-like device began spinning really fast and a sort of orb of light formed at its tip. It glowed with a whitish red light, almost like a laser weapon from futuristic movies. Then, with little to no warning, it fired a beam right at her, hitting her in the chest, although, as the beam was made out of some form of light, she hardly felt a thing, only a mild impact on her chest, like a gentle tap, but then an aura of the same whitish red color engulfed her, making her feel pleasantly warm.
As suddenly as this happened it came to an end, and the "cannon" turned itself off after firing. Miriam looked around and felt around her own body, but everything felt the same. Zuleima then entered the room and they got out together.
"Did... did it work?" Miriam asked, to which she nodded "I don't feel any bigger though"
"It will take sometime. Right now, your metabolism kicked into high gear" Zuleima replied, showing her a tablet where there was a sort of graph, and its bars were steadily rising.
"If my estimations are correct, it may take between 30 minutes to 2 hours for us to see results, as it's a pretty fast acting thing"
"So is that why I feel hot?" Miriam asked.
"Miriam, you've always been hot" Zuleima joked, making her blush a little "But yeah, your temperature will rise as your body is working hard on making more of you, but it's not even enough to count as a fever"
Time passed, and much to Miriam's surprise, she did in fact grow, a few inches in height and several more in her curvier sections. Zuleima took measurements to compare this with her previous data. Even she looked surprised.
"Wow, this worked better than I expected" Zuleima said "We expected you to grow between 1 to 3 inches at most, but you grew 5! Plus your-"
"I don't think I wanna know the numbers for those" Miriam said, she could tell that her chest and hips had indeed grown quite a bit larger and felt heavier too, she was probably on par with Sheila or close to, but at the same time, she didn't want to think too much about it.
"Oh, well... anyway, how do you feel?" Zuleima asked.
"Pretty good actually. I still feel a bit hot, but I feel like I have more energy, like I'm stronger" Miriam said, jokingly flexing her arms.
"Are you sure you didn't give me superpowers?"
"Nope, sorry to ruin your dreams, WonderPanties" Zuleima said with a cheeky smile.
"Wasn't it WonderBra?" Miriam asked.
"Well, yeah, but I think you're gonna need those more" Zuleima said while glancing down at her hips, which had grown considerably wider, to which Miriam pouted. It was then that red lights began blinking in the room while loud alarm noises were heard.
"What now?" Miriam wondered out loud.
"Huh?! An abnormality's been detected...!" Zuleima said, looking confused herself. She quickly checked her tablet and her eyes widened in shock, then she looked at Miriam again.
"Miriam... are you sure you feel alright?" She asked somewhat nervously.
"Yeah, why? Shouldn't I?" Miriam replied, feeling just as confused. And what she didn't notice was that her body was pulsating in an odd, unnatural way, growing little by little with each pulse.
'How?! What went wrong?! The equations checked out!' At that moment, Zuleima was worried that this increased growth would kill her friend by starving her at the cellular level, as the process obviously kept consuming energy, but in that case, Miriam should be feeling tired, yet she looked perfectly fine, other than her gradually increasing size.
"Come to think of it, was this room always this small?" Miriam asked while looking around, not noticing that her friend would've looked smaller as well. Meanwhile, the graphs in Zuleima's tablet went crazy, quickly going past the projected scales. As smart as she was, even she wasn't sure what to do at this moment.
'Well, there is ONE thing, but that's wildly untested...' The Cuban lady thought as she rushed to one of the work stations, rapidly typing various commands.
"Miriam, could you go back into the test room?" Zuleima asked trying to hide the nervousness in her voice.
"Sure" Miriam nodded and went back in, somehow not noticing that she was nearly as tall as the doors that let her in, she stood before the ray device just like the first time, wondering what happened, but as Zuleima had kept her cool she guessed it was a minor setback at worst.
"Dr. Rodríguez, what are you doing?" One of the scientists asked her.
"Saving my friend's life" Zuleima replied with clenched teeth. She went over the updated data for their ray device before issuing orders to fire again.
"At this rate, she could die, we need to reverse this!" She said.
"But we've never tested firing the beam with reversed values" Another scientist interjected.
"Well, it's either that or nothing, and I'm not gonna let my friend die after she offered to help us achieve this enormous breakthrough. After this, we're all gonna look over every single bit of data to find out where this went wrong" She said with a firm tone, and pulled the lever herself, then pushed the button to fire the beam once more.
Miriam noticed that the "cannon" now glowed with whitish purple light, but didn't think much more of it, and then it fired. Unlike the first time, she felt absolutely nothing, but as she could see that the alarm lights had stopped blinking, she figured that whatever happened before was fixed by now. The doors opened on their own and she walked out to ask Zuleima about it, and just then, the alarm noises and lights resumed, much faster than before.
"Dr. Rodríguez, what have you done?!" A mortified scientist said as he pulled his hair in desperation, and Zuleima herself seemed to be lost in thought. Everyone else left in panic, at which point Miriam decided things had become too strange.
"What's up with those people? What happened?" She asked
Zuleima took her measurements and then had her sign some papers, which she took a few minutes to read, but they turned out to be generic legal stuff for formalizing her giving consent to the experimentation.
