[Flashback continues into the next day]
You counted your blessings that for the rest of the day you didn't have to deal with Isabel any more and somehow you didn't get called by Arianna, which tended to happen whenever you were caught up in some school incident. Her interactions left you exhausted but as you went over them in your head you realized that while she was bad, she wasn't precisely Valentina or Toxic Lily levels of bad. And the fact that she not only survived but was handily beating the latter was quite impressive, even more so for a new student and yet more so for someone who presumably led a cushy, spoiled life. You decided that it was best not to mention this encounter with Isabel nor your impromptu run-in with Toxic Lily, it wasn't even two weeks since Lillian and Jen had come to blows with her and you were very lucky that you Arianna had seen the whole thing and only punished Lily. However, as you had predicted, school got anything but easier and it was baffling that a single person's arrival was such a wrench thrown at the flow of things in your life.
On the next day, apparently the girls missed breakfast and went to the cafeteria to ask Dolores for some food before heading to class and as if it were a theatrical script, the moment they disappeared from your sight Isabel appeared once more.
"What now?" You asked with the sigh of someone who knew that he was about to endure some bullshit.
"Aww, can't you be happy to see me at least once?" Isabel pouted sarcastically "I did come to your aid last time"
"And I thank you for it but you were under no obligation to do so" You replied.
"Oh, at least you can say 'thank you', that's one off from the list of things I've got to teach you" She said. You thought she was joking but she actually pulled out a small notebook and crossed out something with a pencil.
"I do my learning at school, at home and with books at times, mind you" You said, not very amused with the whole notebook bit.
"There are things that none of those can teach you~" Isabel smirked and before you knew it, she got a hold of one of your arms "On a different note, since we didn't have much time to really talk, there are still some things I'd like to know..."
"Google is your friend" You said without missing a beat, finding it mildly amusing that she pouted and blushed, looking a bit like a tomato for a few seconds.
"I'm serious!" She huffed and then calmed herself down quickly "Like, I didn't even get to ask your name"
"We had 8 periods of school and you're telling me you didn't pay attention to roll call even once?" You gave her a deadpan look though on the inside you were lightly amused. Pissing her off felt kinda good.
"I-I mean, yes! Ugh, I guess I worded it wrong" She shook her head "I know your name is Blaise but I was curious, that's not a very, um... Hispanic name, to say something"
"Sooo... Just because I'm Mexican I can only be called Juan? Or Pedro if we're feeling daring?"
"N-Nooo! Tch, I didn't mean it like that!" Isabel angrily stomped on the floor "Come on, I'm just curious. What's with the name?"
"Well, I certainly didn't name myself if that wasn't clear somehow" You said with some snark that couldn't be helped, almost sensing her blood pressure rising "As far as I know, it's my father who named me and when I asked him about it, he told me that there was a whole story behind it. He hasn't had the time to sit down and tell me though"
"I see, personal thing then" Isabel said. You expected her to sound disappointed but she didn't seem to be. "You know, most people are named after their parents, grandparents or someone of note in the family tree, aren't they?"
"Yeah, I know" You sighed a little "My mom wanted to give me a more original name but because of the stuff that happened that I still don't know about, she didn't even get to try. Basically, she knew what my father wanted to name me and went with it, kind of her way to give him 'something' at parenting, if that makes sense" You said with a shrug. Isabel nodded and moments later she spoke again.
"What about your last name though?"
"Now you're a police officer?" You chuckled.
"Augh!" She pouted "Okay, I admit it, I didn't pay full attention during roll call! So sue me!"
"Huh, you're already sounding like someone from here" You replied with a mildly amused smirk.
"Hey! I take that as offense! I never called you anglo!" Isabel pouted once more.
"You would've been wrong if you did anyway but okay, touché. It was a light joke, even if it was a bit in poor taste" You said "Anyway, last name is Santos, I dunno how much that's gonna tell you"
"Santos?" Isabel blinked twice in sheer confusion and then she narrowed her eyes "That's not... that's not exactly a very Aztec last name to my knowledge"
"I'm not a full blooded one if that's what you mean. I'm only half from my mother's side. She and her family are though" You said with a tinge of annoyance that let Isabel know that this wasn't the first time you had talked about this "You of all people should know that we get two surnames though. For practical purposes we only really use one around here and anyway, my maternal surname is Xitlali" [Pronounced as Shee-tluh-lee]
"Oh, yeah that definitely sounds more like it" Isabel tapped her chin "A rather uncommon one, isn't it?"
"Yeah, very few genuine Aztec lineages remain and most of them were nobility that was spared. I guess my ancestors were just lucky to escape the slaughter" You said in a calmer tone, as someone merely stating facts.
"Maybe but it being uncommon could mean it's a distinguished one. It means 'Star' in náhuatl, right?"
"Wait what?" Now you were the one blinking in confusion as you were suddenly baffled "H-How do you-?!"
"Look up who wrote and compiled the first Náhuatl dictionary, go ahead" Isabel crossed her arms with a confident smile. You raised an eyebrow but then pulled out your phone and did as she said, looking it up and with some further reading, it hit you.
"Oh... Okay, I see. Some Spanish priest did that, huh. Learned something today" You said as you put your phone back in your pocket "That doesn't fully explain why you know about it"
"It's part of our glorious imperial history, of course I'm supposed to learn it" She said as she pushed her braid aside and gave a bit of a smug giggle. There it was, one step forward, three steps backwards, there was just no getting better. You decided to turn back to your locker as you felt you had nothing left to say.
"H-hey, don't ignore me!" She pouted yet again. When you turned to look at her, she saw that the girls were coming and understood that her time had run out so she simply booked it out of there in a hurry, giving you one last chuckle after enduring her for what felt like an hour or so.
"Her again?!" Jen sounded pissed off already.
"Don't worry, she didn't do anything other than being a tad annoying" You said to hopefully get her to calm down.
"The audacity to come the moment we went away" Lillian said. She wasn't as overt as Jen but as you've known her for your entire life, you knew that she was pretty angry herself.
"Could be worse" You replied, earning raised eyebrows from both Jen and Lillian as well as Cindy "I'll take her any day over Toxic Lily"
"Ooh" Thankfully, they got your point "Yeah, that makes sense" Cindy noted. After that, you headed to class and the rest of the day went about normally though almost every time you were alone Isabel would appear again and she was about as much of a handful as Celeste, giving you some headaches as you were forced to keep dealing with her. Of all periods, History class remained the tensest to you.
[Various timeskips featured below]
History class had begun this year dealing with the subject of ancient american history and thus far, you'd been okay. You proved to be well versed and quite fond of prehistory and the period after, acing the assigned presentations that you and your friends were given covering the topic of the ancient paleo-indians and their travels around the continent. Isabel looked equal parts impressed yet bored, bored like a kid that is forcing herself to stay still when she'd love to cause a ruckus, that much you could tell.
As the classes went on, the class covered the history of the ancient civilizations that formed starting from all the way North and working your way down South, eventually reaching Mesoamerica, aka Mexico, as one of the few historic cradles of civilization. Otherwise one of your strongest suites but with Isabel present you felt the tension in the room arise. You tried not to let it get to you too much but it was undeniable that it was taking a toll on you as you were usually happy to teach your friends about your ancestors and the people around them but now it felt rather exhausting. Every time Isabel came you felt on your shoulders the burden of having to defend not just yourself but your entire bloodline from someone that clearly judged it.
Some times, though, things turned out different from how she expected, like her first Art class with Lulu which happened a few days after your first encounter...
"Ooh, I've never seen someone so enthusiastic about theatrical plays!" The redhead teacher said upon looking at Isabel, who besides the hairdo, was wearing clothes that to some extent looked like a medieval princess' dress slightly adapted to modern times.
"Excuse me?" Isabel raised an eyebrow, already feeling attacked.
"I haven't gotten the finalized version for this years' curriculum though so I'm not even sure what plays we'll have this year but your spirit is admirable! I'll consider you first if we get anything along the lines of Shakespeare or anything with a fairytale princess, I'm sure you'll be great" Lulu said. You and your friends struggled to hold back your laughter while Marcia sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose, looking like she was debating whether to step in or not.
"B-But I'm not-"
And then Isabel was interrupted by another student asking Lulu a question, taking away her chance to try and explain herself. The funniest thing was that Lulu wasn't even genuinely insulting her, she actually believed that she had just found a kindred soul as passionate about art as herself.
