It was as if the trio had all blinked at once and recognized it. The young people shared an awkward look, the one improv artists had while trying to recover from a monetary lapse in their routine. “So Blaise…” Lillian began only to be rudely cut off by the loud crack of thunder that caused the trio to scramble. Blaise cupped his ears, Jen tried to hide behind the steering wheel, Lillian squatted down and clung to the front of the vehicle. Out on the waves a storm front had seemingly risen out from the depth of the ocean, the dark clouds visibly lumbered their way inland. Jen gasped. “Wait that wasn’t on the weather report.” Lillian shot her male friend a harsh stink eye moving and swiftly reattaching the parts of the motor. “It is now thanks to Blaise the jinx.” She taunted. “What…!? Come on Lil you honestly think I tempted fate or something?” The young man said and slid into the back seat with a soft **click**.
**GGRRRND… GGRRRIIINNDDD….. GRRRRRRR….** “Come on… Come onnnnn!” Jen whined.
Lillian kept one sympathetic eye on her driver, the other continued its harsh stink towards the back seat. The young man returned her stink with a heavy shrug of his shoulders. The noirette shook her head and sighed. “I’m sorry, this is just not how I wanted our first day of summer to go!”
**GGGgrrrnnn-ffffffffpppphhhhh.**
The sedan’s engine fell back lifeless while a horrible stench slowly filled the air. “JJJeeennn.” Lillian sighed again, her hand held her friend’s shoulder. Jen looked towards Lillian with an embarrassed blush in full bloom. Blaise also offered a sympathetic pat on the shoulder before he then pointed back toward the Estate house. “It was hard to tell before, But I think I saw some lights on in that house, even if we can’t get Inside, I think it would be safer to wait out the storm there.” Thunder rocked the eastern sky. Jen eagerly nodded as her stomach thundered as well. “I can only deal with one storm at a time.” He softly thought to himself. The trio then gathered their belongings and secured the Sedan as best they could.
As Blaise and Lillian assisted Jen over the pole gate, she passed them both a nervous smile. “Do you think its really haunted?” She asked, clutching her stomach and beach bag. “Maybe will meet a ghost that will grant us some wishes!” She said softly.
Blaise gave her a quizzical look. “Just what kind of ghost grants wishes?”
“Friendly ones?” She offered. "I'm suddenly reminded of a old TV show where a group of teenagers entered some haunted house and they release a ghost from a... I think a vacuum- or was it a- Yes it was a Vacuum and it granted them a wish."
Lilian who had taken the lead plotting a path through the many holes “We really need expand your horizons there Jen. The only thing houses like this usual contain are black widows who’ve killed off all their husbands or cults ready to sacrifice you to gain a bunch of power or something!” She looked back with a small grin. She frowned a bit when her look was completely ignored by both in her party, following their eyes she would drop her jaw a bit.
Before them stood a great three story tall stately building. The dirt road flowed into a cobblestone drive past many over grown garden centers that stood on either side of the path. Whoever had built this estate spared no expense, meaning they made sure their gaudy monument would stand the tests of time. A building that looked to be plucked right of a Victorian ghost story and deposited into the hilly coastline of California.
A pair of flood lights spotlit the front door in the grey of the pre-storm atmosphere. “Those look brand new…” said Blaise. Lillian pointed towards a pickup track with a tarp covering its bed. “That for sure is new.” She would not be wrong as even in the odd light they could see the soft shine of wax on its blue paint job. “Oh so maybe people are working on renovating this place?” Came the hopeful tone of Jen as they approached the main door.
