Blaise looked off into the eastern horizon off the highway. He could hear the faint rolling crashes of the coast below him. The rising suns lights breaking between the tree behind him as they dove into the waves. Turning towards the sunrise, just past the slightly cluttered support walls and up into a valley he saw what looked to be fence posts, long sense dominated by both human thievery and natural growth. Carved into the hill side was an old-fashioned dirt road littered with potholes formed by the many rains sense it had last been properly used. The dirt path actually connected to the emergency shoulder of the highway with a convenient bar gate. He rubbed the back of his head in thought. Partially obscured by the nature of the hill he could make out the structure of a stately home. A faint flicker of some light shown from an upstairs window. Due to his love of media, even in the warm glow of sunrise he saw every waving red flag that gave the estate ‘horror house’ vibes.
Lillian’s bubble butt bounced softly as she worked. She had unplugged the battery and had checked everything she could get her hands on. “It’s so weird. Your sedans old sure, but… nothing’s jumping out at me as…” Her tone drops into the same low rasp all youths use to mock their elders. “I’m sssooo ooolllddd put me out of my misery!” She looked over her shoulder at Blaise with a snicker. He simply rolled his eyes and step over leaning against the back passenger door.
Reaching into a window for his water bottle he noticed something crumpled up in a pocket of his backpack, after a quick review he waved to towards the front of the car. “I only need a few more and I’ll have bingo!” He announced. Jen poked her head out of the drivers seat window as Lillian moved to join the both of you. “What?” Jen asked in an uneasy tone that resonant with the bubbling of her stomach. All three would focus upon the small cube of distorted paper. In bold font on the top of the bingo card read ‘Horror Tropes Bingo’ with appropriately themed decals along the sides.
Blaise would press his thumb against the bottom row. “First, the unsuspecting victims suffer a mysterious accident that leave them stranded!” He waved his other hand towards the vacant early morning asphalt.
“Second, the protagonist…” He points a cheeky thumb towards at himself and wiggled his brow. “…notices a mysterious forbidden place!” He drew the girl’s attention to the pole gate with his pointer finger. A rusted ‘keep out’ sign doing its best to keep its needed intimidation to do its job. The girl’s eyes then traced up the path in unison with the boy’s finger as Blaise pointed the hidden estate.
“Third…” He then with a flare pulled out his own phone, his comedic tone dipped slightly. “…the group loses all access to outside communications!” Turning his phone to show the lacking connection caused both girls to also check their phones. “No bars.” “Out of range.” The two would mumble back-to-back!
This caused Blaise pause. He had hoped that by pointing out all these tropes he could raise the mood, now it only seemed like he uncovered exactly what the universe had planned for their day. Jen’s face dropped into a fearful frown. “Does this mean…” Blaise placed the card in her outstretched palm as she pointed a shaking finger towards the G part of the bottom row. “This is the part where the monster comes out?” Jen was not a fan of horror movies in the slightest. Lillian and Blaise having the come up with the bingo cards as a way of helping her adapt.
Unsure of himself he uttered a “Yes?!” His single word hung with extended air time before a louder word rushed in and slammed it to the ground. “BOO!” Both Jen and himself screamed while Lillian fell to the asphalt laughing hysterically. The young man reached down and shook her shoulders. “That wasn’t funny!” he cried before joining in on the laughter. “Lillian you jerk!” Echoed Jen her tone no longer of fear but well-known frustration. Said jerk had to pull her curtain of hair from her eyes as she stood up. She wiped away a few tears and sighed. “Come on guys, ha ha, those are just movies!” With a quick swipe she took the bingo card in her hand then tossed it back in the car’s window. “Besides, that O square says the ‘protagonist’…” she delivered a soft elbow to Blaise’s ribs. “… gets a major power-up to beat the monster. Are you saying there an Iron-man suit or something in that creepy building?” The young woman didn’t wait for a response and returned to the front of the car.
The following mainly ties in the future plans I have. But feel free to use or disregard it if you have your own ideas!
Meanwhile from within an upstairs room of the Estate a pair of iridescent eyes floated. The room was still dark as the house was sheltered for now from the rising sun. Its voice echoed against the empty walls. “Just what do you have in store hmmm~?” Those otherworldly eyes were pointed out a window and locked on the distant sedan. Then it slowly closed one eye, its form suddenly jolting through reality to appear back behind the sedan. Like the framing of a film, it saw the perfect angle. The trio of friends making the best of their bad situation… The other eye now closed. And with it everything else as well. A single instant of reality blacked out with only a gentle scratching sound to be heard.
