At the princess’ request, Private Alice trembled.

Atop the royal staircase, it was somewhere she could’ve only dreamed of seeing; after all, she wasn’t nearly important enough to guard the castle. Her posting was usually some back alley, making sure the local peasant kids didn’t get up to any mischief.

Just a few years ago, she would’ve been one of them, dressed in her rags and playing kickball about the town square.

Since then she could at least afford a dress. Part of her secondment here involved dressing down, so she could at least look cute. Maybe for a tea party, how quaint.

So in a periwinkle blue and white number, she cleared her throat, swallowed down the nerves, smoothed out her hair… and put her best foot forward.

Heart thundering in her chest, she slowly extended a shaky hand, and rapped on the royal door. Solid oak and painted a brilliant white, her knock thudded heartily. No awkward rattle like the barracks, or indeed her own front door, the sound was clear and true. Appropriate for an important summons, she rationalised.

”Come in.”

”Whew…” Alice trembled, and nudged her way in. With a chunky clunk, the heavy door opened smoothly, and she entered into a different world. No more rations and pub banter, her new calling was the height of envy, and she didn’t even know what it was yet.

Surrounded by more white in every direction, her eyes first clapped on the scarlet table and chairs before her. A tea party was still on the cards, it seemed. But a tea party with the princess? How posh.

But then there was a bed at the back wall. A massive, lurid pink number with its own curtain, it was fancier than her entire house. Surely that wasn’t what the princess wanted of her… was it?

Alice immediately stared down at her feet, as the blush curdled her cheeks. Amongst a platoon of only women, it wasn’t unheard of, even somewhat normal, for two or more to ‘share a bunk’. But the princess? She wouldn’t desire such things with a commoner, would she?

That was when the the princess made herself known. Garbed in her famous orange jumpsuit, she stood before a window ledge to Alice’s right, where the satin curtains billowed gently in the breeze, and she couldn’t look more magnificent.

Or, dare Alice even consider it, beautiful.

”So good of you to come.” Princess Garnet beamed at her, and Alice could just feel the heat percolating in her face. “You’ll certainly do. Mind if I ask your details?”

”Um. A-Alice, ma’am,” she trembled. Honourifics were probably wise, seeing as this was royalty she was addressing.

”Please, no need for formalities. And your age.”

”…fourteen.”

”Hm. A little young,” Princess Garnet plucked her lip with her index finger. “But close enough. Now, were you briefed on your assignment at all?”

”N-not really, no.” Alice gulped. She was too young? Whatever for? She’d been drinking in the pub since she was eleven. She could surely handle whatever was required. “I’m honestly not sure if you need me here for a private guard, or a tea party or a uh,” she side-eyed the bed. “…sleepover?”

“Hm. You’re sharp.” Garnet nodded, and Alice’s mind imploded. What about that was right?!

”I was vague to General Beatrix, but I won’t mince words with you, Alice.” The princess approached, and every curve the young woman possessed was creeping slowly closer. “I need companionship, Alice. The hours in this chamber are long and lonely, and I’m only human. Recent departures have left me longing for a future slipped through my fingers, and that’s left me… frustrated. Do you understand what I’m saying, Alice?”

”I um, I-I think so, ma’am,” Alice mumbled. Was this happening? Was this really happening?! The princess, whom she’d admired for as long as she could talk, wanted her for ‘companionship’?

That princess’ soft hands met hers, and she was forced to lift her gaze, so that the body couldn’t enchant.

”Splendid,” Princess Garnet smiled, and pursed her lips. “It’ll be our little experiment.”

She learned forward, and a peasant girl turned soldier sealed the deal with a kiss.
