An air of confusion perfumed the Alexandrian barracks that morning.

Having solicited the usual duties; patrol, supplies, intelligence, what have you, General Beatrix cleared her throat for one last ‘special’ duty.

According to the General’s orders, the Queen in Waiting had requested an audience with one of the patrolwomen.

An awed hush rippled through the barracks. The Queen, requesting one of them? How absurd!

It was considered an honour to be posted on guard duty near her. But an audience with her? That had a three week waiting long for those who sought her out.

To an Alexandrian foot soldier, raised in the slums on bread and water, it was beyond comprehension.

And when Private Alice, Service Number 200109 got the call, she couldn’t help but feel like public enemy number one. Whatever the queen’s request was, it was surely a higher honour than collaring pickpockets.

So with a clumsy salute and a wobble in her step, Alice prepared herself for her royal service.
