Abby nearly choked on her food as Joel walked proudly into the house, followed by a small auburn-haired girl no older than 15. The girl's emerald eyes briefly make eye contact but quickly glance away awkwardly. Abby studied the gnarly-looking scar on her wrist. This was her, the girl immune to infection, the girl her dad was supposed to have operated on. How could she have been worth the lives of everyone in that hospital, and how could Joel walk around like he did nothing wrong? How could he bring himself to smile? Abby's knuckles whitened around the steak knife in her hand, the temptation to stab him in the neck then and there was all too appealing.
"Abby, this is my brother Joel, and this is Ellie. They actually came from Salt Lake as well! Tommy beamed, but Abby and Joel exchanged glances. She was having trouble not glaring at him. Did he know already that she was there when it all happened? Did he know she knew it was him who did it?
"Hi. I'm Abby.." She muttered through gritted teeth.
"Nice to meet you, Abby. What made you leave Salt Lake?"
Abby glared up at him; she couldn't hide her hatred any longer. "Too many crazed murderers running around." Abby could feel her jaw clenching so hard, her teeth might crack.
"I'm sorry to hear that. Ellie and I didn't really see much of that." Joel responded almost flippantly.
"Didn't see fucking anything...." Ellie muttered under her breath from across the table. She was giving Joel a nasty side eye, which made Abby wonder what all this kid knew.
Dinner resumed shortly after. Abby stayed quiet, exchanging awkward glances with Joel and Ellie throughout the meal. "So Ellie, you're Joel's.... daughter?" Abby probed.
Ellie's cheeks flushed bright red as she answered. "Oh, n-"
"Yes! She's my daughter." Joel intervened, and Abby watched as Ellie's face blushed even brighter with embarrassment.
"Y-yeah, my mom died when I was young, so it's been just us two for a while.."
"Sorry for your loss," Abby saw through it, but rather than probe deeper, Joel swung back.
"You're a bit young to travel so far. Did you have any family out here?" The words struck every nerve in Abby's brain; it was like he knew exactly what he was doing. She nearly choked on her food again.
"I'm 19 actually, and my dad died in Salt Lake, a couple of weeks ago, so...."
"Sorry for your loss," Joel said flatly. A loud thud echoed from under the table as Joel grunted in pain. Ellie's leg swung back, having kicked him thoroughly in the shin. She still looked appalled and pissed at him.
The tension only grew as the night carried on; by now it had become obvious to everyone but Tommy and Maria, and maybe Ellie by a little, that they had both come from the Fireflies at the hospital. Despite her best efforts, Abby was now an immediate threat to Joel. If she didn't make a move soon, she'd probably be the one to die tonight.
"Well, I'd better help the wife with the dishes, thanks for joining us, Abby!" Tommy announced. As he got up to leave, it was now just her, Ellie, and Joel sitting at the table. Abby couldn't stand it any longer; damned were the consequences; the knife, still in her hand, was ready for attack.
"Hey, I gotta ask Joel, did you enjoy killing everyone in that hospital?" Abby said, loud enough for everyone to hear. Joel's face went pale.
"W-what?" He stuttered.
"The lives of every Firefly in that room meant nothing to you, huh? Even my dad? He didn't even have a weapon on him, and you shot him in cold blood!" Abby lunged at Joel's neck with the knife, fury in her eyes, she was too focused on Joel's lowered defense that she missed Ellie's eyes staring right at her the entire time.
"Joel!!!!" Ellie screamed. The table was too wide, and Ellie was too quick to act. The small girl dove off her chair and pinned Abby's wrist to the table. Abby struggled against her long enough for Joel to snap out of it. Before Abby could even begin to process what had just happened, Joel's elbow collided harshly with the back of Abby's head, and she blacked out.
"Joel, what the fuck what the fuck!!!! What did you do? What do we do with her?" Joel grabbed Ellie by the shoulders,
"I'll explain everything, but right now I need you to go back to my house, grab that device we found at the lab. You know the one." Joel said calmly.
"O-Ok," Ellie nodded and ran out the door.
"Joel, what the fuck just happened? What are you talking about? What device?" Tommy yelled as Joel pushed Abby's unconscious form onto the table.
"When we got to the lab you told us about, there was this device Ellie found, she shot it at some hunter, and he got really, really small.... It's like ah... Oh, what the hell, it's a shrink ray Tommy".
"Oh damn...I-I'm sorry, Joel, I found it a little suspicious she was coming from the same place, but I thought you told me you killed them all".
"Yeah, that's what I thought too... Fuck me, now Ellie knows, and..."
"She loves you, Joel. She might not ever forgive you, but I sure as hell know she loves you."
Soon enough, Ellie returned with the device in hand. It looked incredibly complicated, with small buttons and knobs, but it utilized parts of a pistol for its housing, which made firing the device very simple.
"Alright, kiddo, go ahead and shoot."
Ellie turned the knob to 1cm and fired. Blinding light filled the room, and when it dissipated, Abby's body was the size of a small ant, lying helplessly on the dining room table. As everyone gathered around, Tommy was the first to speak. "So... What happened to the last guy you shrank?"
"There were three. I couldn't find the first two, but the last guy, I think I got angry and stomped on him." Ellie shifts her feet nervously. "It was....gross."
Before long, Abby woke up with an incredible headache atop an endless, flat field of white cloth. This was it, this is the afterlife? Kinda boring.. Abby thought, as her gaze moved upward, however something was very wrong. She was surrounded by Tommy, Joel, Maria, and Ellie, only they were unimaginably large, miles tall at the least! Abby shuddered and pinched herself. She wasn't dreaming; this was real, somehow she was the size of a bug..
"What the fuck did you do to me!!!!" Abby screamed. She waved her arms frantically, but was getting no reaction.
"Can we hear her?" Tommy asked. His booming voice made Abby's ears ring painfully.
"N-No, don't think so". Ellie's equally powerful voice responded. "So, what do we do with her now? We can't just kill her, right? I mean, that'd be so fucked up". With those last words, Abby felt a little bit of piss trickle down her jeans. At any second, one of their mountainous hands could come down and turn her into a stain.
"Jesus, I wonder what it's like for her right now? I'd piss myself". Maria said as she leaned over. The giantess's face filled Abby's vision above her.
"It fucking sucks! What do you think, you big asshole!!!!!" Abby shouted in defiance, knowing it was falling on deaf ears.
"Joel, we ain't keeping her as a pet, this is all you and Ellie," Tommy warned, his gaze still on Abby. She felt like bacteria under a microscope.
"Right, I say it's up to you, Ellie," Joel finally piped in. At this, Ellie's eyes widened, and her cheeks flushed bright red. "What? No fucking way, that'd be so awkward..."
"Ellie, it's either that or we end it here and now."
"No! Not on my tablecloth, take it outside if you're going to do that!" Maria glared. Abby never felt so dehumanized. She was either about to die or be the property of some teenage brat; she'd take the former any day.
"Fuck... Fine, I'll take her. We're far from done with this, though. We need to talk.." Ellie warned Joel, and she then grabbed a glass cup from the kitchen and set it sideways in front of Abby.
"I know it's not much, but better than riding in my pocket".
The glass landed with an earth-shattering thud. Ellie's giant hand was still on top of it, keeping the opening facing Abby. Abby shivered as she approached the glass. God knows how many giant mouths have been on this before. Looking up, Abby could see the fine details of Ellie's giant fingers. The intricate patterns along her finger pads, the dirt under her nails, and the tiny, baseball-sized beads of sweat dotting her pores. Abby had gotten about halfway in when the glass flipped over, and she was stuck at the bottom. Ellie's massive palm was wrapped around the bottom half of the cup surrounding Abby's view. Abby grimaced at the small specks of dirt stuck to Ellie's hand and the noticeable smears of sweat against the glass as Ellie's clammy palm maneuvered around to lift the glass into the air. Looking up, she watched as this girl's titanic face got closer and closer. Abby could see well into the dark chasms of Ellie's nostrils, dark streaks of sticky mucus connecting building-sized nose hairs deep within. It was so disgusting, the human body at this size was a nightmare. Just the feeling of Ellie's excited breathing pulled Abby off her feet.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you ok? I won't let these asshole touch you either." The giantess glared at the others around her menacingly. Through it all, the moisture from Ellie's breath fogged the glass, and from what Abby could see above the veil of Ellie's palm, the dark gap of Ellie's mouth was easily big enough to swallow her without noticing. This idiot is going to kill me within a week... Abby muttered to herself, life as she knew it was about to become a living hell...
