Abby knew for a fact she was making the biggest mistake of her life. It had only been a couple of weeks since she had found her father dead, at the hands of that Monster. She had been reckless, she didn't pack enough food, and forgot her sleeping bag. Weeks of following tire tracks across Utah into Wyoming lead her to the outskirts of the city of Jackson.
Abby couldn't believe her eyes. It was a fully functioning community with electricity, running water, and a thriving farming sector. Her hand trembled over the grip of her pistol, watching groups of patrols ride in and out on horseback. It was well-guarded and heavily armed, too much to attack head-on. Hoisting her backpack back onto her shoulders, Abby carefully slid down to the flat area of land cleared out around the city's walls. Her body ached, and her muscles were sore; she was hardly thinking when suddenly a guard shouted from atop the large wooden palisade.
"Freeze!!!! Drop your weapon and announce yourself!!!"
Abby nearly jumped out of her boots. The man was aiming a rifle at her; his beard was almost as thick as his hair.
"Easy...." Abby cooed, gently setting her pistol on the ground. "My name's Abby, I'm just passing through."
"You alone?" The man responds, his tone lightens.
"Yes, I'm coming from Salt Lake, didn't expect all this to be here." Abby's eyes dance around the broad wooden defenses and towers.
"Right, stay where you are, we'll send someone out shortly..."
Abby waited as the sound of muffled footsteps from the other side gathered at the gate. The massive structure slowly creaked open as out trotted two people on horseback, followed by a German Shepherd. The dog carefully sniffed at Abby's boots and legs before cuddling up to her.
"She's clean," One of the riders said. "Follow us, we'll bring you in for questioning".
The walk in was daunting; the street was bustling with people coming to see her, though as hard as she looked, neither Joel nor the immune girl where in the crowd, but they had to be here...
---A couple hours later---
"Right, your story checks out. You sure you've never heard of the Fireflies?"
Abby's throat tightened. "N-no, sir. I heard a commotion at the hospital and wanted to get away".
"Well then, I can't offer you much. If you choose to stay, you'll be expected to work as hard as any of us. In return, I can promise food and a place to rest your head. We'd love to have you here in Jackson, but my feelings won't be hurt if yah say no". The man smiled kindly. He had a clean mustache and long brown hair; she swore she had seen him before.
"Th-thank you! I-I-I accept! Of course, I accept! Where do I sign!" Abby joked back; she could feel the tension in the air dissipate in seconds.
"Today, if you're not too tired. Name's Tommy, by the way. My wife Maria and I sorta inherited the place. I'll have to introduce you two someday."
"That'd be great!" Abby beamed. She had her in; it was only a matter of time before she found that monster.
"Say, can I interest you in dinner tonight? Maria makes a mean pot roast!" Tommy offered as he helped Abby to her feet.
"That'd be fantastic, actually! Thank you so much, Tommy, you people are so generous."
"Ahh, don't mention it." Tommy shifted his feet awkwardly. "Just look for the green house in the middle of town, can't miss it!"
Abby spent the next few hours scouring every corner of Jackson, but no luck. Everyone here was unbelievably kind; it was paradise. Had life turned out differently, she would have thrived here. But her mind was made up weeks ago; she'd do anything to avenge her dad, and that meant sacrificing everything. By the time the sun went down, Abby was exhausted; she hadn't had a real night's sleep since she left, and now the thought of a warm, home-cooked meal made her mouth water. Tommy was right, though; their house was hard to miss, the wood looked freshly painted, and the enticing smell of pot roast wafted from the windows.
Knocking on the door, Abby was greeted with welcome arms by Maria, who didn't even know her yet was treating her like family. "Come in, come in! Tommy's said so much about you! I'm so happy you decided to stay. We've built this place up to be a haven of sorts, welcoming all sorts of travelers like yourself!"
"This is all so kind, Maria, I've never seen anything quite like it!" Abby followed the woman inside, and after setting out the dishes, the three of them sat down for dinner. Abby was just about to bring the first forkful of food to her mouth when there was a second knock on the door.
"Shit! Hope you don't mind, Abby," Tommy said as he shot up from his chair. "I invited my brother and his kid over, too!"
"Awesome, more the merrier!!" Abby responded.
The door swung open as Tommy embraced the man outside. Abby took her first bite of pot roast, and it was heavenly. The rich flavors swirled over her tongue as she turned and glanced at the man in the doorway. Hot, chewed-up pot roast spilled from her open mouth. Standing in the doorway was a Monster...
