The first thing into the room was the perfume.

It got there before she did, rolling across the carpet in a warm front. Vanilla, amber, and something expensive and floral that Victoria bought by the liter and wore to take out the recycling. Then came the bangles, a bright golden jingle that Max would have recognized from a coma. Then came the rest of her.

Victoria Vasquez-Calhoun filled the doorway the way weather fills a sky. Six-foot-one was tall at five-foot-eight. At three inches, she went up and up past any point his neck had been designed for. She was in her Saturday uniform: a stretched white tank top doing heroic work against a pair of tits that each outweighed his entire existence several thousand times over, nipples dimpling the cotton, green booty shorts losing a war with her hips and the huge, round ass behind them, and bare brown legs that started somewhere near the carpet and ended somewhere near God. Her wavy black hair was pinned up with a claw clip. Her lips were already berry red. It was barely nine o'clock.

She held a mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST STEPMOM, which Izzy had bought her as a joke. Victoria had never gotten the joke.

"Max, mijo, are you awake? You promised you'd go through the Ventus packet with Mama today, and I know you haven't even opened the housing—"

She stopped.

Max was still on his hands and knees in the middle of his navy sheet. Naked. Three inches tall. Frozen mid-crawl, a deer on a highway the size of a state.

For one long second, nobody moved.

Then a second figure leaned around Victoria's hip. Black fringe, silver lip ring, an oversized band shirt, and black lipstick she'd clearly slept in. Izzy had a Monster in one hand and her phone in the other, and she looked at the bed with the polite, mild interest of someone watching a weather report for a different state.

"Huh," Izzy said.

That was it. Huh.

Max knew that huh. It was the same huh she'd used when Victoria found the vape cartridges in the dryer lint trap. The huh of a girl who already knew exactly how the conversation was going to go.

The mug hit the dresser so hard that coffee jumped out of it.

"Max?"

The floor shook as Victoria crossed the room. Three steps. Each one hit the carpet like a dropped piano, and each one rattled the controller against the bed frame. Then she was on her knees beside the mattress, and her face came down over him like a moon falling out of orbit. Huge brown eyes, wide with horror. A nose the size of a small car. Lips that could have swallowed him in a single word.

"Oh my God. Oh my God. Mijo. My baby. What happened to you? What happened?"

"I don't know," Max said. His voice came out like a squeaky toy that had been stepped on. "I just woke up like this, I swear, I didn't—"

"Shh, shh, shh."

A fingertip came down out of the sky. It was wider than his chest, warm, and smelled like cocoa butter, and it pressed gently but firmly against his sternum until he had no choice but to sit down on the sheet. Then it began to stroke. Down his chest. Down his stomach. Back up. Down again. Exactly the way he'd pictured it in his worst-case scenario two minutes earlier, the pitying coo and the single finger, like he was a hamster that had gotten into the Halloween candy.

The math wasn't hard. Her fingertip alone was about as long as his torso.

"Mama's here," Victoria breathed. "Mama's here now, sweetie. Nobody's going to hurt you."

"I'm not hurt. I'm just... small."

"Just small." She let out a laugh that was half a sob, and the gust of it ruffled his hair and smelled like French vanilla creamer. "He says just small. Izzy, are you hearing this?"

"I'm hearing it," Izzy said from the doorway. She took a long sip of Monster. "Wild."

*

Victoria went into crisis mode the way some people went into a hot tub: all at once, and with a lot of splashing.

First, she checked him for injuries. This meant turning him over with one finger, then turning him back, then pinching his arm very lightly between her thumb and forefinger to "see if anything was broken." Nothing was broken. It still felt like being inspected by a forklift.

Second, she tried to cover him up. She tore off the corner of a tissue from the box on his nightstand and draped it over his lap with tremendous dignity, like a nun at a crime scene. The air conditioning blew it off immediately. She replaced it twice before giving up and simply cupping one hand over him.

Third, and most alarmingly, she started talking to herself.

"We don't panic. Mama doesn't panic. We are not going to the hospital, absolutely not, they'll put you in some lab, they'll put you on the news—"

"Mom," Max tried. "Maybe a doctor—"

"No." It came down from above and stayed there. Her bangles clanged against the bed frame. "We are not going to the hospital, and that's final."

Once Victoria put her foot down, it tended to stay down. Max had learned that around the time she'd vetoed his application to a college in Oregon because it "rained too much for his sinuses."

He closed his mouth.

Victoria sat back on her heels. Her eyes had gone strange and far away, and for a moment the grip around him tightened just slightly. Something passed over her face that Max couldn't read. A memory, maybe. She almost looked frightened.

"I know what this is," she said quietly. "I've seen this. Back when I was modeling, there was this stuff going around. Little bottles. One or two drops and you lose a couple of inches. Three or four..." She trailed off and looked down at him, and her lower lip trembled. "Mijo, where did you even get something like that?"

"I didn't! I swear to God, I didn't take anything."

"Hm," Izzy said.

Both of them looked at the doorway.

Izzy had wandered a few steps into the room and was examining the poster over his desk with deep scholarly interest. It was for an anime he liked. She had mocked it exactly forty-one times.

"What?" Victoria said.

"Nothing." Izzy shrugged one shoulder. "It's just. Like. He's eighteen, Mom. He's on the internet all night. You don't know what kind of stuff he's into."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"I'm just saying." Izzy turned around and fixed Max with a look of perfect, innocent concern. It was a terrifying expression on her. It sat on her face like a borrowed coat. "There are whole communities out there. Guys who want to be tiny. You know. Around big girls." She paused for exactly the right amount of time. "Like, really big girls."

Max's face went so hot he was surprised the tissue didn't catch fire.

"That's not—Izzy, what? That's not a thing, I'm not—"

"Dude, I'm not judging." She held up both hands, and the Monster sloshed. "I'm literally being so supportive right now. It's Pride month energy."

"It's July."

"It's Pride month energy year-round, Max. That's what being an ally means."

Victoria looked from her daughter to her stepson and back again. Her perfectly shaped brows drew together.

"Isabella. Max is not..." She lowered her voice, as if the walls might be listening. "...into that."

"Okay." Izzy shrugged again. "I mean, you're the one who found his browser history in, like, tenth grade. Not me."

Victoria opened her mouth. Then she closed it.

Max wanted to die. He wanted to crawl inside the controller and live in the battery compartment forever. He remembered that conversation in tenth grade. It had been about a lot of things, most of which he'd successfully blocked out, and none of which Victoria had ever brought up again.

But now she was looking at him with a small, thoughtful crease between her eyes, and he could see the gears turning behind them.

"That's not true," he said weakly. "That was—it was a pop-up."

"Mm-hm," said Izzy.

"Isabella, enough." Victoria's voice snapped back into its usual register, the one she used on customer-service lines and slow waiters. "Your brother is in crisis. Go downstairs and get Mama's phone. And a washcloth. A warm one."

"Stepbrother," Izzy corrected, but she went.

She took the long way around the bed to do it. As she passed, she leaned down until her face filled the whole world, black lipstick and silver ring and a breath that smelled like energy drink and morning, and winked at him.

Max's stomach dropped through the mattress.

Oh, he thought. Oh, you absolute demon.

Then she was gone, padding down the hall in her slouchy socks and humming one of her parking-lot songs, and he was alone with Victoria.

*

Without Izzy in the room, the air changed.

Victoria's hand stayed cupped over him. Her thumb stroked absently along his side, up and down, up and down, the way she used to run her nails over Izzy's back during movies. The mattress dipped under her elbow until the sheet sloped downhill toward her, and Max slid a half-inch closer without meaning to. The warmth coming off her was like standing near an oven.

"Mama's going to fix this," she murmured, mostly to herself. "Mama's going to figure it all out. Don't you worry about a thing, sweetie."

"Okay," Max said. And then, because some stubborn part of him was still eighteen and still about to leave for college: "But Ventus starts in, like, six weeks."

The thumb stopped.

"Ventus," Victoria repeated.

"Yeah. Orientation's in August. I already paid the deposit. You already paid the deposit."

She stared at him until the ceiling fan had gone around a dozen times. Something shifted behind her eyes, heavy as furniture being dragged across a floor upstairs.

"Mijo," she said gently. "Look at yourself. How are you going to go to college like this? How are you going to carry your books? How are you going to get across campus? A squirrel could carry you off."

"I'll—figure something out."

"You can barely figure out your laundry." She said it fondly, which somehow made it worse. "No. No, no, no. You're not going anywhere until we've sorted this out. You're staying right here with Mama, where it's safe."

"Mom—"

"Where Mama can see you."

There it was. The jewelry box. He could feel it coming.

Victoria glanced around the room as if she was seeing it for the first time and finding it wildly inadequate. Her eyes moved over the dirty laundry mountain on the chair, the cords snarled behind the desk, the gap under the door, the air vent, the window with the broken screen. With every item she counted, her lips pressed together a little harder.

"This room is a death trap," she announced.

"It's my room."

"Not anymore." She sat up straighter, and her bangles chimed. "You're too little to be left alone. What if Izzy's friends come over? What if Mama vacuums? What if the cat gets in?"

"We don't have a cat."

"What if we did?"

He had no answer to that.

She scooped him up.

It happened so fast he barely had time to yelp. One moment he was on the sheet, and the next the bed was falling away beneath him, the floor was a distant beige ocean, and he was sitting in the cup of her palm. Her fingers curled up around him like the walls of a pit. The skin under him was hot, cushiony, and smelled of cocoa butter. Gold bangles slid down her wrist and clinked together just beneath him like wind chimes the size of truck tires.

She brought him up to her face. Up close, her lips were a deep berry glossy landscape, slightly parted, close enough that he could feel the heat of every breath.

"There," Victoria whispered. "There's my baby."

"Mom, I'm eighteen."

"And you'll always be Mama's baby. Even more now." Her eyes went soft and glossy, and to his horror, he saw that she was tearing up. "Look how little you are. You fit right in Mama's hand. You don't even weigh anything."

"I weigh something."

"Shh." She kissed him.

It wasn't really a kiss. It was being enveloped by a pillow made of lipstick. Her lips pressed against his whole front from his forehead to his knees, damp and gigantic, and when they pulled away with a soft sound, Max was berry red from scalp to shins. He could taste the wax on his own lips. He sputtered.

Victoria giggled. It was a girlish, delighted sound that he hadn't heard from her since his dad's last visit home.

"Oh, look at that! Mama marked you."

*

Izzy came back up the stairs with Victoria's phone, a washcloth, and absolutely no urgency. She stopped in the doorway, looked at Max sitting in Victoria's palm covered head to toe in lipstick, and grinned so slowly that it looked like it hurt.

"Aww," she said. "Look at him. He's loving this."

"I am not—"

"He's not even fighting it, Mom." Izzy set the phone on the dresser. "Like, if somebody picked me up like that, I'd be biting. Just saying."

Victoria studied him, tapping one berry nail against her lip.

Max realized, a beat too late, that he was in fact not fighting it. He was sitting quietly in her palm, holding onto the side of her thumb for balance. It was warm, and it was steady, and it was the only thing in the room that wasn't trying to kill him. That was the only reason.

That was the only reason.

He let go of her thumb. Immediately, the palm tilted, and he grabbed it again.

"Mm-hm," said Izzy.

"Isabella." Victoria didn't take her eyes off him. "Go call your abuela and tell her Mama won't be at brunch."

"Are you gonna tell her why?"

"Go."

Izzy went, but not before she made a heart with her fingers at Max over Victoria's shoulder. The door clicked shut behind her. Down the hall, he heard her laugh, low and delighted, before her own door banged.

Victoria let out a long breath. Her whole chest rose and fell with it, those big tits heaving up against the tank top, and Max rose and fell with her hand.

"Your sister," Victoria said, "has a very strange imagination."

"Yeah," Max said. "Yeah, she does."

"You don't..." She hesitated. Her cheeks darkened slightly under her makeup. "Mijo, you don't really like this. Do you? Being so little? With Mama?"

It was the worst question anyone had ever asked him, and there was no right answer.

If he said yes, he was a freak, and Izzy won. If he said no, he was ungrateful, and Victoria's lower lip would start trembling again, and she would spend the rest of the day telling him everything she had sacrificed for him.

"I like that you're... taking care of me," he managed.

Her whole face lit up, as if he had just handed her a Mother's Day card he'd made himself.

"Oh, sweetie."

He realized his mistake about half a second before she made her move.

"Then Mama's going to take care of you," she said, "the way Mama knows best."

She lifted him higher. Past her chin. Past her collarbone. Toward the scooped neck of that white tank top, where the fabric was stretched so tight over her tits that it had gone almost translucent, the dark rings of her nipples showing through like two shadows the size of manhole covers. She hooked one long, berry-painted nail into the neckline and pulled it forward. The gap opened up beneath him like a canyon at sunset: two vast brown boobs rising up on either side, freckled at the top, glistening with lotion and a faint sheen of sweat. Between them was a deep, dark, humid crack of cleavage that smelled overwhelmingly of vanilla, amber, and warm, salty skin.

"Mom," Max said. "Mom, wait, I can just ride on your shoulder—"

"And fall off? With Mama's luck?" She clucked her tongue. "No, mijo. This is the safest place in the whole house. Nobody gets in here without going through Mama."

She tipped her hand.

He slid.

The first thing he felt was the heat. It was humid and total, like stepping into a sauna wearing nothing. The second was the softness. On either side of him, her tits pressed in with a heavy, yielding weight that made him feel like a pebble swallowed by a waterbed. They molded around his shoulders, his ribs, his hips, slick with her sweat, jiggling every time she breathed, until only his head and one arm stuck out over the edge of her tank top. The third was the sound. He could hear her heartbeat from the inside. It was deep and steady, and it boomed through his whole body.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

Victoria adjusted her tank top with two fingers, tucking the neckline snugly beneath his chin. Then she patted the top of her boobs. The pat landed on him too, a soft, smothering wave that pressed him a quarter-inch deeper, and he squeaked.

"There," she sighed, and her whole chest swelled with the word, pushing him up and then easing him back down. "There. Now Mama always knows where you are."

Max looked up. All he could see was the underside of her chin and her berry lips curved into the most satisfied smile he had ever seen on her face. It was the smile of a woman who'd come in to nag him about a housing packet and found something much, much better.

"Mom," he tried, muffled by a slope of warm, sweaty tit. "I really think I should still go to Ventus—"

"Shh, shh." A fingertip came down and stroked his hair. "We'll talk about it later. Mama's got you now."

Down the hall, Izzy's door cracked open. Her voice drifted out, chatty and bright, saying something into her phone that sounded an awful lot like you are not going to believe what's living in Mom's boobs.

Victoria didn't seem to notice. She picked her coffee mug up off the dresser and started toward the door. Max swayed with every step, her boobs bouncing and squeezing him from side to side in their warm, soft, inescapable grip, while the heartbeat thudded all around him.

"Mama's little man," she murmured to him, tender and terribly certain. "And you know what, mijo?"

She patted her tits one more time, and the jiggle went all the way through him.

"You're all Mama's."
