Victoria's bedroom smelled like the inside of a department store. Max had been in it maybe a dozen times in four years, always to deliver something, never past the doorway. Now he got the full tour from between her tits. A king bed buried in decorative pillows that no one was allowed to touch. A vanity crowded with bottles and brushes and a ring light. A walk-in closet with its door half open, and inside, a rack of heels that went on so long it looked like a shoe store's back room. Everything was cream and gold. Everything was soft.

Everything was enormous.

"Okay, sweetie," Victoria said. Her voice came through her boobs before it came through the air, so he felt every word buzz through the soft, sweaty walls on either side of him and into his ribs. "Mama has to make some calls. Your father. The pharmacy. A lawyer, maybe. And I can't be worrying about you rolling off the counter while I do it."

"I could just sit on the nightstand," Max offered.

"With the ceiling fan going? You'd blow away like a little leaf." She crossed to the big dresser against the far wall, a white-and-gold monster with eight drawers and crystal knobs. "No. Mama has a better idea."

She pulled open the top drawer.

Max saw lace. He saw satin. He saw cream and black and a pink so loud it was almost a sound. Rows and rows of neatly folded panties stretched out below him like crops in a field, all of them sized for an ass you could have parked a Honda behind. The smell came up next: powdery fabric softener, cedar from a little sachet in the corner, and underneath it, faint and warm, Victoria.

His brain shut off for a second.

"Mom. Mom. That's your—"

"It's the only drawer in this room that locks," Victoria said briskly, like she was explaining the dishwasher. She tapped a tiny brass keyhole with one berry-red nail. "Your sister went through Mama's jewelry box when she was fourteen. Never again."

"Can't I go in the jewelry box?"

"The jewelry box doesn't lock anymore. Because your sister broke it."

There was no arguing with that logic, mostly because it wasn't logic.

She fished him out of her cleavage with two fingers, and he came loose with a wet little peel of skin from sweaty skin. The cool air hit his sweaty skin like a slap, and then he was being lowered past the lip of the drawer and into the satin. She took a little while to arrange things. A folded pair of black lace went down as a mattress. A cream silk pair got bunched up into a pillow. A lavender pair of full-coverage briefs, which Max would later learn was the nicest thing she owned in the "comfortable" category, got draped over him up to the chin.

She tucked the edges in. She actually tucked them in.

"There," Victoria cooed, leaning over the drawer so that her face filled the whole rectangle of light above him. "Snug as a bug."

The waistband of the blanket alone was longer than he was tall. He was a child sleeping under a parachute that smelled like his stepmother's laundry.

"This is really weird," Max said.

"Weird is waking up three inches tall, mijo. This is just practical." She smoothed the lavender briefs over his chest with a fingertip. "Mama'll leave it open a crack so you get air. You yell if you need anything."

"What if I need to pee?"

She thought about it for a long time.

"Hold it," she decided, and slid the drawer most of the way shut.

The light went from daylight to a single gold stripe. He heard a tiny metallic click as she turned the key, and then the jingle of bangles as she tucked it into her bra. Then came the creak of the bed as two hundred and fifty pounds sat down on it, and the bright little bloop of a phone unlocking.

Max lay in the dark, buried in silk, and stared at the stripe.

Things he'd done this morning: woken up tiny. Things he'd done since then: nothing. Absolutely nothing. He had been carried, kissed, stuffed, and filed.

At least it's soft, some traitorous part of his brain offered.

He told that part of his brain to shut up.

Down the hall, Isabella Vasquez-Calhoun was having the best morning of her life.

She sat cross-legged on Max's unmade bed with his laptop on her knees and a fresh Monster sweating on the nightstand. His password was ventus2026. It had been sunnyvale2022 before that and pokemon123 before that, and she had known all three within a week of each one.

Step one was the folder. She had built it weeks ago on a thumb drive, back when Miguel's "starter pack" was still a little vial rattling around in her hoodie pocket from that parking lot, and she'd only half believed it would work. She'd pulled three hundred and twelve images off a dozen art sites: giant women in heels stepping over cities, tiny men climbing up enormous thighs, a whole subfolder that just said MOMMY. There were forty-some stories with titles like My Stepmom's Little Secret and Shrunk and Pocketed. She dragged the whole thing into Documents/School/Calc II/Old Notes/misc and gave it a creation date of last March.

Step two was the forum. She'd made the account three weeks ago, too, backdating nothing, just posting at two in the morning when Max would plausibly be up. The username was TinyMax_Sunnyvale, because subtlety was for people who didn't want to get caught. She logged in on his browser so it would save the password, then scrolled through her greatest hits with real professional pride.

does anyone else think about their stepmom being like 100 ft tall lol. asking for me

she's 6'1 irl and i swear every time she walks past my room the floor shakes and i just want to be under there

not even sexual (it's sexual)

Step three took the longest, which was annoying, because it was the most boring part. She opened a private window, then thought better of it and closed it. Private windows didn't leave history. She went through the regular browser instead, clicking link after link for forty minutes. Foot sites. Butt sites. Videos called things like GIANTESS STEPMOM SITS ON TINY and POV: you live in her shoe. She let each one load for a few seconds before moving on to the next, the way a horny loser would.

She finished by searching how to get shrunk real and is it weird to want to live in your moms underwear drawer. Then she sat back and admired her work.

That last one was a little on the nose, given where he currently was. She left it anyway. Art was about taking risks.

Izzy closed the laptop, wiped the screen with the hem of her shirt for no real reason, and padded down the hall with it tucked under her arm.

*

The first thing Max heard was her socks on the hardwood. Then the door. Then her voice, pitched about an octave higher and twelve IQ points lower than normal.

"Mom? Um. So I wasn't gonna say anything."

"Isabella, Mama is on hold with the pharmacy."

"No, totally, it's just. I went in Max's room to look for, like, his charger. For you. Because you were gonna need his phone, probably? To call people? And his laptop was open."

Max's heart stopped.

His laptop had not been open. His laptop had been closed, under his bed, behind a box of Christmas decorations he'd never returned to the garage. It was where he kept his laptop specifically because of Izzy.

"And?" said Victoria.

"And I didn't, like, look look." A pause, and he could hear her shrug. "But there was some stuff on the screen. And I'm just saying it kind of. Explains things? Maybe? About this morning?"

"Izzy, what are you talking about?"

"You should just look. I really don't wanna be the one to say it." Her voice dropped into the gentlest, most sorrowful register Max had ever heard her use, the one she saved for teachers when she'd missed a test. "He's my brother, you know?"

"Stepbrother," Max hissed into the lavender briefs. Nobody heard him.

The bed creaked. The mattress springs groaned in relief as Victoria shifted her weight. The laptop's startup chime sang out, cheerful and stupid.

"It's asking for a password."

"Oh, weird, I think it's ventus2026? He, um. Says it out loud when he types. Sometimes."

He did not.

Clicking. Then silence.

It went on for a long time. Max lay perfectly still in the dark with silk up to his chin, listening to the soft, steady tap of Victoria's nail on a trackpad. Every few seconds it stopped, then started again. Once, she inhaled sharply. Once, she said "Oh," very quietly, the way you'd say it if you opened the fridge and found something that had been there since Easter.

"Mom?" Izzy asked innocently.

"Isabella," Victoria said, and her voice sounded far away. "Who is... TinyMax underscore Sunnyvale?"

"Oh noooo," Izzy breathed.

Max wanted to scream. He opened his mouth to do exactly that, then pictured how it would go. A tiny, muffled squeak from the panty drawer, followed by both of them turning to look at the dresser. That was all it would take to confirm that he was, in fact, exactly the kind of guy who would end up in a place like this.

He closed his mouth.

"'She's six-one in real life,'" Victoria read aloud, slowly, "'and I swear every time she walks past my room the floor shakes, and I just want to be...'" Her voice wobbled. "'...under there.'"

"That's so specific," Izzy said, as though in awe. "Like, you're six-one."

"I know I'm six-one, Isabella."

Click. Click. Another long pause. Then a sound Max had never heard his stepmother make: a strangled little gasp, high and breathless, followed by her hand slapping over her mouth.

"Ay, Dios mío. There's a whole folder."

"Is it bad?"

"It's in his calculus notes."

"That's kind of smart, though," Izzy offered. "Like, nobody would ever look in his calculus notes. Including him."

The bed creaked again. Max heard the faint electronic swish of photos being scrolled through, one after another, faster and then slower. Victoria muttered things under her breath. Most of them were in Spanish. A few were just "oh" in escalating tones.

Then she found the browser history.

Max knew she'd found it, because the scrolling stopped dead, and for a full five seconds, the only sound in the room was the ceiling fan.

"Isabella," Victoria said. "Go get Mama a glass of water."

"I can stay, if you want? For, like, emotional support?"

"Water."

Socks. Door. Izzy humming. The song was the one about dying in a parking lot, but somehow she made it sound triumphant.

*

For a while Victoria didn't move at all.

Max lay in the drawer and listened to her breathe. It was slow and deep, the kind of breathing she did in the yoga videos she pretended she didn't do. In through the nose. Out through those berry lips. In again. Somewhere in there, the laptop clicked shut.

"Shoes," she whispered to nobody. "He looked up... shoes."

Max pressed both hands over his face.

What really got him was that he could feel her thinking. He could practically hear it through the dresser, a big, slow engine cranking over. He'd heard that sound before. It was the same pause she'd taken before deciding he needed braces, before deciding he'd quit soccer, before deciding Oregon was out. It was the sound of Victoria Vasquez-Calhoun making up her mind about his life.

He knew that pause. Nothing good ever came out the other side.

The door creaked. Izzy was back.

"Here's your water."

A long swallow. The bangles jingled as Victoria set the glass down on the nightstand.

"Sit, mija."

The bed sank under a second weight. Through the gold stripe of light above him, Max could just make out the edge of a black sock and, past it, the curve of Victoria's bare knee, angled toward her daughter.

"Okay," Victoria said. She took a breath. "Okay. So. Your brother has... interests."

"Mm-hm."

"Very specific interests."

"Super specific," Izzy agreed solemnly.

"And Mama is not going to judge. That's not who Mama is."

"You're literally so not judgey."

"Thank you, mija." Another breath. "I just keep thinking. All these years. All these years, he's been in that room, posting on the internet at two in the morning about Mama, and he never said a word. He must have been so lonely."

"So lonely," Izzy said. Her voice cracked a little, which Max knew from long experience meant she was trying very hard not to laugh.

"And then this morning..." Victoria's voice dropped. "Izzy, do you think he did this to himself? On purpose? Because of... because of Mama?"

There was a pause. Max held his breath.

"I mean," Izzy said slowly, "I don't wanna say he did. I'm not, like, a cop. But he did search for 'how to get shrunk real.' Like, four times."

"Four times," Victoria whispered.

It had been once. She'd done it once and then hit refresh three times, which Max would only learn much, much later, and which he'd never forgive her for.

"Oh, my poor baby." Victoria's voice wobbled again, but differently this time. It was softer and thicker, closer to tears, but not sad ones. "He wanted this so badly, and he didn't even feel like he could talk to me about it."

"Honestly, Mom? That's kind of on all of us."

"It is." Victoria sniffled loudly. "It is on us. On me. I'm his mother. Stepmother. Mother. I should have made a safe space."

"You can still make a safe space," Izzy said, so gently, so earnestly, that Max wanted to climb out of the drawer and bite her ankle.

He couldn't. The drawer was locked. The key was in Victoria's bra.

He heard the bed creak as Victoria stood. He heard her bare feet cross the carpet in three slow, house-shaking steps, each one shaking the dresser so that the drawer rattled and the silk shifted around him. The stripe of light darkened as her body moved in front of it. He could see nothing but the white of her tank top, the underswell of her tits pushing it out like a roof overhang, and the soft brown curve of her stomach where it had ridden up.

She was standing right over him.

"Well," Victoria said softly. "If this is what my boy wants..."

Her palm came down flat on the top of the dresser, directly above his head. He felt the weight of it through the wood.

"...then Mama's going to be supportive."

"So supportive," said Izzy.

"We're not going to shame him. We're not going to make him feel weird." Victoria's voice was steadying now, warming up, gathering speed the way it did when she planned a party. "He's had so much to deal with. We're going to make this house safe. We're going to let him be who he is."

"That's so beautiful, Mom."

"And we're going to start slow. Mama is not going to overwhelm him." Her fingertips drummed once on the dresser. "But he clearly has a lot of feelings. And he's been bottling them up for years. And now he's three inches tall, and he doesn't have anybody to go to but us."

Max lay in the dark under a pair of lavender briefs and felt every hair on his body stand up.

"So what are you gonna do?" Izzy asked. It was the most innocent voice yet. It was a work of art.

Victoria laughed under her breath. It was fond, and it rolled down through the wood and into the drawer and into him.

"What any good mother would do, mija," she said. "I'm going to help him explore."

The bangles jingled. Her palm patted the dresser twice, right over his head, the same way she'd patted her tits that morning.

Izzy excused herself a minute later, very calmly, to "give Mama space to process." Somewhere down the hall, her door closed, and a muffled shriek of laughter went off behind it like a firework.

Max pulled the lavender briefs up over his face.

Down the hall, the laughter stopped. Then, faintly through two walls, came the quick, steady clicking of a keyboard. It went on, and on, and on.

Izzy was telling somebody.
