"You!"

That voice, coupled with the unmistakable scent of perfume creeping into the hall, didn't take long to bait in a few recent memories that he was all too eager to repress, making him cringe. He didn't give the risk of it being anybody else a chance and shot the stink eye right over his shoulder, hitting his mark dead on.

"What're you..." Rarity started, but stopped herself before she could ask what'd be an obvious question.

"What do you expect? I live here!" Jack spat at her, slotting his keys in the lock. "You know, humans lived in these dorms before you guys'd shown up, right?"

"I-I..." Rarity's jaw hung open in surprise, head pulling back, but she furrowed her brow in anger and held her breath. "Well!"

"Oh, what, you think you guys are the only ones who couldn't keep every single scrap of what they cared about in the war?" He continued, running on a second wind. "I think I'm just as entitled as a pony can be to talk about a war we partook in to defend ourselves from slavery!"

When Rarity shrunk back at that claim, he nodded triumphantly and turned back to his room, grabbing at the door handle, but let go in surprise when he felt the tip of her tail strike him in the back of the neck. Shooting another glare over his shoulder, he locked eyes with Rarity as she gave him one of her own, the two standing in a silent stare down before they both shuffled back into their rooms, their locks clicking almost simultaneously.

When the confirmation appeared on his laptop in bright green, he took it as permission to finally lay back in bed, resting his neck on his hands and softening his chest with a long, content sigh.

Since for what felt like forever, he finally felt free of the school, having cleared past his oral report so smoothly and having submitted all his other work a few days in advance. Top it off with the fact that his mom and dad were out of town, negating any reason he had to leave his room, and all he had to be concerned about for the next three days were eating, breathing, and not drowning in the shower. Weekends like that were a rare gem to uncover in college, and he had every intent to cherish every second to tick by before school came back on Tuesday.

Not that the memory of what happened this morning was totally gone, but Jack was finally making himself keep it from bothering him, his only regret being a few brilliant comebacks he'd since thought up that he could've snapped at Rarity when the two were dueling one another outside. Still, while not daring enough to walk around campus at night, he realized he was in the mood for nachos and pushed himself up, his feet hitting the floor. He wrecked the heels of his shoes even more by stuffing his feet right in, hands open around the knob to twist it open...

...when a polite little string of knock struck at the door, stopping him before he could leave.

"...hello?" He called through the door. When nobody answered, he peered through the peephole, only seeing black. Confused, he pushed the handle down and pulled the door open, only to flinch back when he saw...
