"Don't drop them."
That'd be the closest I'd ever get to a 'thank you,' or even just a 'let's go' from Twilight as she plopped one last book on top of the stack in my arms, hunching my spine down by another disc. This time, as Twilight looked around the store from above the shelves, she finally seemed interested in the front doors and trudged her way out of the aisle. I followed just a few feet on her tail as she navigated around the tables and desks along the way for the exit.
When we were back near the front desk, the clerk pony was switched out for a scared-looking human who whimpered and shrunk behind the desk as we made ourselves known. Twilight simply snorted and held her head up high as she walked right into the doors, letting the front of her belly push them open.
"Twilight, wait!" I called after her. "Aren't you still supposed to pay for these?"
With her butt only still halfway through the doorframe, Twilight came to a complete stop, one so quick that I had to stumble to keep from going right into her. Her blubbery cheek squished along her sholder as she craned her head back, shooting me down with a glare of pure acid.
"I'm sorry, but did you just say that I should have to pay him for my work?" She jeered. "Did he write any of the material? Or doany of the research, or even help get it published?"
"Well...no, but-"
"Exactly. Glad we could see each other." She growled, holding her leer on me as she dragged her hips free of the store.
Dusk was settling into night over the town when the two of us were walking back down the street, and all the homes' lights were shutting off one by one. All the shops' doors were getting closed up, only kept lit for a few stallions or humans left to sweep up, but Twilight still didn't try to keep her head from turning about to look and browse through the windows. Her speed kept drooping, sometimes even hitting a total stop to peer into some random perfume shop, almost daring me to ram right into her or let her book hoard fall over.
I never made any more eye contact with her on the walk to know for sure, but just from behind, I could sense an air of smugness puffing up her cheeks.
"Suppertime!"
Even Twilight's slaves were spared any hellos as she kicked the library's door open with her magic but none of them ran to the dining room. Instead, without missing a beat, all of them leapt fromwhatever they were doing and flawlessly amassed in an array on the center of the room, with only a corner of the square left open. They all looked at me, and I stared back, but a quick zap of magic stung at my back and sent me running into my place.
"Alright," Twilight began once we'd all settled down, patrolling in front of us like some army general. "Since I know we've got enough food last us one, I'll be expecting a full dinner. By tonight, I'll be expecting to be completely full. By tomorrow, that'll be another foot. Got it?!"
"Yes, Mistress Twilight," all the slaves recited in perfect harmony, but I mumbled a word behind.
"...and if there are any mistakes, even the tiniest one, then I'll just let you all have the fun of finding out who's responsible when all of you get punished. Got it?!"
"Yes, Mistress Twilight," they all resounded again, and I actually did a halfway better job of keeping up.
"Well, what're you all waiting for?!" She roared. "Get to it! NOW!!!"
