First day in the cooking club (PART ONE)
Harem Protagonist: CHYOA
Chapter 20
There was something to be said for small, close-knit groups like this.
"So the three of us are really the only members of the club? I thought high school clubs had to have at least ten people in them." A short query from you to Satomi had her clarifying that her and the other girl (Ruu), and now you, were the only members of the cooking club. Satomi continued her explanation.
"I know it sounds strange, but this school works differently than other schools around Japan. You transferred in, which is really rare- almost unheard of- but the clubs don't follow any particular rules for having a minimum number of people. Certain groups, like the sports club- which is really an umbrella term for all of the students in any sports club, be it basketball, soccer, baseball, or anything else- have so many members that they're usually split into subgroups. There's no issues for teachers reaching them because there's such a large amount of students in each group. Clubs like ours, on the other hand, are usually paired with other small groups so that teachers can teach at least 5 people at a time. Some classes are small enough that we self-study, which doesn't really work as well as having an actual teacher, but there's nothing we can do about that."
Okay, that made more sense, and told you more about how this school worked. Good to know, considering this was your life now.
"Okay, but how do those classes work? Do we have to, like, go back to homeroom for regular classes?"
"Nope!" Satomi said, smiling brightly. Continuing on, you were able to hear why she sounded so happy about those words.
"I'm guessing you were with the student council president, so you probably missed homeroom. The school board decided it'd be a good idea for students from different clubs to get to see each other at least once a day, so we all have homeroom first thing in the morning where we can meet and talk with each other. With other students of our years, of course. Ruu's in the year behind mine, and you're in her year."
Once again, very helpful information to have. Interesting enough that you were actually able to keep your eyes off of the oversized, dusky orbs trying to get your attention...
Or so you thought.
"Yeah, I'm super glad we don't have to go to a normal school! This is so much more fun!" Ruu exclaimed, stretching her arms in the air excitedly. You did your best to ignore the way her huge chest swayed with her movements. You had two girls right in front of you, and even if one of them didn't catch you ogling them, chances were the other would. You didn't know a huge amount about Satomi's personality, and she hadn't had any scenes in-game that had been lewd or anything, so you honestly didn't know how she'd react in a situation where she caught you sizing her friend up.
Speaking of that, you weren't exactly sure what Ruu and Satomi's relationship was. Ruu, being non-native to the base game, was an unknown to you, but you knew that Satomi was the kind of person who didn't have many (if any) friends. And you didn't know how this 'Esperverse' as you'd come to think of this universe, had changed that up.
Still, it was clear that the two were friends, as mismatched as they looked. Getting busted by one in front of the others would probably result in you getting kicked out of the club right away.
"So, uh... if homeroom is the only time groups like ours meet with everybody else, when do we do those 'other classes' you mentioned? Or meet with other groups?"
"Well, today's pretty much a free day, I think the faculty are spending it to reorganize lesson plans or something. So we're self-studying today. But when we do have actual classes with teachers, we're usually paired with the manga club or another small club. Oh, and each club also has special activities each day relevant to their focus. One of the benefits of being in the cooking club, we can make our own food instead of eating at the cafeteria. We also get to go on school-approved shopping trips to get ingredients, which is pretty nice. We're one of the only clubs in the school that gets to organize it's own field trips."
Hell yeah, that sounded sweet to you. This school- this club kept getting better and better! Sure, you would've met a whole lot more people if you'd joined something like the soccer club, but this way you got to cook instead of studying (apparently) and leave school earlier with the hot girls who were in your club!
"So, we don't have to study at all? We can just cook food instead?" You asked, feeling excited by what you were hearing. Your excitement died down a bit at the look on Ruu and Satomi's faces, as both girls- the busty 'gyaru/gal' and the towering foreigner actually looked a bit embarrassed.
Satomi spoke up, still with a look of awkward embarrassment on her face.
"I didn't exactly say that... This is still a school, so every club member has to earn basic grades to keep up with national education standards..."
Ah, that made sense. It was probably the kind of thing where Ruu and Satomi were only allowed to keep to themselves so long as they weren't literally flunking out of classes. No doubt if that happened the cooking club would be shut down (at least temporarily) while the two girls were tutored until their grades were back at acceptable levels.
"Well, I'm sure that's not a problem! I doubt either of you are having any problems on that front!" You stated, hoping your confidence didn't sound false. Curiously, rather than agreeing with you both girls looked even more embarrassed. Satomi turned her head so that her gaze didn't meet yours, while Ruu laughed nervously.
"Eh heh... yeah, totally. Not a problem at all..."
Weird.
Oh well, moving on! You wanted to get to know your clubmates, and though it had been interesting, you'd heard more than enough about how the school worked. Hopefully that was the last information dump you'd be getting anytime soon.
(((You're telling me. Our readers are probably getting tired of all the boring chapters with no juicy stuff in them. Seriously, this isn't a novel.)))
'Readers? Chapters? The hell are you talking about?'
(((Never you mind, kid. Just get back to business. I'll be having words with the overseers if they keep filling chapters up with boring, dry text like this.)))
Well, that was weird. But no use thinking on it. What to do next... Oh, right!
It'd probably be a good idea to ask Ruu and Satomi about themselves. You were alone and friendless in this world right now, but considering that it followed anime logic, the two girls could very well become your best friends in the weeks to come. Clubs in anime were almost always super-close knit groups that looked out for one another.
"So, uh... if you don't mind me asking, what lead each of you to join the cooking club?"
Satomi blinked in clear surprised, while Ruu's eyebrows raised up to her hairline. Evidently neither girl had been expecting that question.
Satomi spoke up first, and you had a fairly good idea of what she was going to say.
"Well, as you probably already guessed, I'm not exactly Japanese. Not full-Japanese, at least. I'm half-French, and other than being born and spending my childhood there, I've traveled around a lot for my parents' work. Been to the US, all over Europe... anyways, I've been at this school for a couple years because as soon as my trait developed, my parents decided it'd be a good idea for me to embrace the Japanese half of my roots, so I've been living in one of the campus dorms ever since. And joining the cooking club, which I'm now the, uh, leader of, means I get to spend as much time as possible pursuing my biggest passion in life! Cooking and eating cuisines from around the world!"
Yup, that matched up with Satomi's in-game lore. Though the thing about her parents didn't sound quite right... You couldn't remember if it was her mother or father who was Japanese, but Satomi had definitely lived with one or both of them in game.
Now something the gorgeous, massively buxom nurse had said earlier popped into your head. Something about a lot of people living on the school's property.
Right, there were dorms here. Dorms which Satomi lived in. That raised a lot more questions in your head, but honestly you didn't want to ask them now. You'd taken in enough information for one day.
"Okay, so you live on campus and spend most of your time trying out or making food from around the world. That sounds like a lot of fun, and I'll bet it's a great learning experience too!"
Satomi's bright smile aimed down at you, telling you that you'd definitely said the right thing.
"How about you, Ruu?
