Where it all began...10 years before the Exodus
Andrew's life had been very traumatic since he was a child. Born into a large Microputian family that his parents could no longer support, he and the rest of his siblings were abandoned by their parents when he was 6 in an adoption Center for Microputian children, which was located inside another huge adoption Center for Prodigan parents who wanted to adopt children from the smaller races. Life in that Center wasn’t good for these poor children, with thousands and thousands of Microputian children arriving every week and with few Lilliputian and Gulliverian parents (who were best suited to raise them) actually interested in adopting them. It made resources increasingly limited to the point of being insufficient to clothe and feed the entire population of the Center, not to mention education was limited to only the larger children such as Lilliputians and Gulliverians who were more likely to be adopted by larger parents. There was no chance of them being adopted by Brobdingnagian and Prodigan parents as they were unable to speak to and care for a Microputian child due to their microscopic size.
But Andrew's life (and that of all of the other children) would change forever one afternoon when he was playing in the huge field at the back of the Center with all his friends, when suddenly the gigantic shape of a green iris appeared in the sky, blocking all light. Andrew and the thousands of other orphans of the Center were stunned and shocked by this unusual phenomenon that did not occur regularly. This frightened the younger children and the older kids tried to comfort them, holding them tightly to their chest to shield them from the horror in the sky. Of course, they knew very well to whom that gigantic iris belonged. It belonged to a Prodigan who was observing them through the lens of one of the many advanced microscopes that the Prodigan adoption Center owned, so that the potential Prodigan or Brobdingnagian parents could visualize the thousands of Microputian children. That way, they could see their innocent little faces and see if they could sympathize with them and adopt at least a few hundred of them.
However, that strategy did not have the desired success, since it was not common that a Prodigan or a Brobdingnagian who visited the Center was interested in adopting Microputian children and they quickly opted to observe the bigger orphans so Andrew only witnessed those moments a few times during the many years he spent at the adoption Center. It was impossible for him to know who was the person who was watching them, if it was male or female because this was not mentioned by their caretakers and teachers who ran the Center and often they themselves did not even know who they were as they were once orphans too. They chose to stay behind in the orphanage because they had nowhere else to go, still had siblings to take care of or wanted to ease the pain of the children.
However, this time it was different...that gigantic iris belonged to that of a beautiful young Prodigan woman who observed each one of them through the microscope. She tried to discern the thousands of children who lived in that Center and imagined herself being with them. Talking to them, playing with them and giving them the love they needed. Of course that was impossible to do due to her immense scale, but it brought out the desire that had accumulated for many years inside her... to be a mother.
"How cute and tiny they look from here" she mentioned.
"These children are the residents of the Microputian Adoption Center no. 506." told Dr. Alice O'Hara, the woman in charge of the Prodigan Center. They were in a small hallway filled with several glass tanks resting on metal shelves. This was the Microputian adoption area, the smallest in the Center, but the largest in term of population of all. It was the least frequented by Prodigan parents wishing to adopt, so Dr. O'Hara was in charge of the adoption area.
Dr. O'Hara was personally in charge of guiding and accompanying this young woman since she was interested in wanting to know about the entire Center and had asked to be taken to see each of the different orphaned children that were in the different areas of the place, including the Microputian children, something that wasn’t common among visitors.
"How old are these children?" asked the young woman, who was still looking at the children in the place from the microscope.
"Their age ranges from being as old as twelve to as young as a few months. The population of that tank numbers almost 30,000 children, all strong and healthy and ready to accept a new home" Dr. O'Hara replied, hoping to convince this young woman in some way to adopt at least a few hundred of them.
"I see... and I imagine they have been cooped up in here for many years?" the young woman asked.
"Indeed, some arrive at the Center, according to our records, since they were abandoned here when they were very young, they have not seen anything outside that place and the walls of the glass which as you may have noticed, have a shielding that does not allow them to see outside. Of course, we can see the inside of the glass and the various adoption Centers that are there, but if you want to see them more precisely, the microscope can help you."
"Fascinating" said the young woman who continued to look closely at the microscope once again. When she finished and sat up again, she surprised Dr. O'Hara with her statement.
"I can see that they are prefect for me. I have decided to adopt all of the Microputian children in this Center."
"Really?!" asked the Doctor with absolute disbelief she had never seen in her years of running this place someone so excited to adopt these the "littlest" ones in the place....
"Yes, indeed. I wish to adopt all the children inside this fish tank, and the other tanks in this room. Not just all of these sweet, little Micros, but all the Lilliputian children you showed me in the previous area. Are there any problems with that?"
"No, not at all, I am just amazed at your compassion towards them, this Center has never seen someone as caring as you and it brings hope to this place that it is not all bad for these children. I thank you for your generosity and wish you the best of luck in successfully raising them," the doctor answered sincerely. "What is your full name, my dear?"
"Sonia Softmore, doctor and thank you very much for giving me this opportunity. It has been my greatest wish to have children and now it will be fulfilled. When can I take home the little ones?"
"Right away! Just sign the necessary adoption forms and you can leave with them”, said Dr. O’Hara.
"Great" replied Sonia Softmore, a cheerful and sociable biologist scientist who was on the cusp of her career, about to turn 30 and who had long put off getting married and having children to achieve her academic and professional successes for the sake of science and technology. Now she was ready to undertake this new project and change the lives of countless children who did not have the opportunity like her to be raised and educated with love and kindness.
Now she would be their mother, their gigantic mother who would care for and watch over each one of the billions upon billions that lived in that little glass tank. Even though she was excited about this new chapter, invasive thoughts of fear and doubt began to cloud her mind. How would she communicate with all of them? How would she get to know all of them? Would they get along with her and accept her as their mother? The questions in her mind began to gather and crowd together, but they vanished as soon as she was handed the small tank in which Andrew and thousands of his brethren lived, who became excited when they heard through the immense loudspeaker of the Center that all of them had been adopted by the gargantuan being they had seen reflected in the sky just a few moments ago. Their tank was loaded into bags along with all the other tanks in the room. They would move out of the Center and live happily under the care and protection of a benevolent and giant Prodigan mother who would give them the love and affection that unfortunately their parents could not...
Now, 10 years later Andrew is a handsome and strong young man who likes adventures and difficult challenges and who is about to embark on a unique and fascinating adventure. A wonderful and unique exodus into a special world... his mother...
