You instinctively pull Sophie close as Ben's giant fingers pry open the top of the cardboard box. Light pours into the box, illuminating the frightened faces Sophie and the four other people around you...shrinks not people, since that is what all of you had become. You want so badly to believe that Ben would recognize you, that he would remember that you're his neighbor. He is not looking at you though.
Still dressed in his work clothes, an off-white shirt with his tie undone, he seems preoccupied as his fingers dip into the box. With his other hand, he picks the cover off one of the dishes on the table, and with astounding speed, his fingers clasp around an older man who would probably have been about the same age as Ben, with maybe a couple of years on him. Hoisting the inch tall shrink out of the box, you can see Ben still thinking about where to place him, before finally dropping him into the bowl of citrus salad.
"And one more..." Ben says, as he scans the cardboard box, "for the main course..."
Hearing your formerly friendly neighbor so casually refer to you and the other shrinks like you are nothing more than morsels of food hits harder than a stack of bricks dropped off the side of your chimney stack. You should have known better than to try to get help from someone shopping for shrinks in a grocery deli, even if he was someone you knew. What did you expect would happen?
Sophie screams suddenly as Ben's fingers sweep past you and pluck at her, pulling her away from your grasp. Frightened and pumped with adrenaline at the mere proximity of such a massive threat, your body snaps into action, tugging Sophie with all your strength, but Ben is too powerful, his grip on her unbelievably tight.
"Ken! Ken! No please don't let him eat me! Ken!" Sophie screams as your neighbor brings her up to his face and looks at her closely in the light.
