Completely unceremoniously, and without any of the titans noticing, you plummeted into the gaping maw of the dusty, worn, orange sneaker. As soon as you hit the sole, your nostrils were filled with an indescribable stench. The material looked like canvas, but as your body rubbed against it, you realized it was more leathery and stronger than simple running shoes. They might as well have doubled as the footwear of someone working all day in the sun. The smell that permeated every inch of the sole lent all the more credence to it. It was overpowering, a mixture of old sweat and ripe apples. Even compared to the lavender pony's meaty soles, this was absolute hell. You had to get out of here, quick.
While you gasped for breath, tears welling up in your eyes, the three titanesses sat down at the kitchen table, Spike bringing seconds so that everyone could have a tasty snack before the race started.
"Thanks, Spike!" Rainbow shouted, as she eagerly dug into her own plate.
"Mind ya' manners," Applejack grumbled, though she ate no more dignified. To Twilight, both of them looked as if that had been the first meal in days for them. And she had a theory, on why that was. She couldn't help but giggle.
"So... how long have you been training this year?"
"Well..." Rainbow mumbled through mouthfuls of pancake, "we stopped at midnight."
"And since one o'clock we're warmin' up," Applejack finished. Twilight only now noticed how frazzled both of her athletic friends looked. Never before had she seen both of them this worked up. Like every year, both of them were intent on winning the race, and this time both of them had gone all out in their preparation.
Twilight gave them a sheepish smile. Her training had consisted of reading her favorite Daring Do novel and getting an extra hour of sleep. She knew she could hardly compete with the both of them - only once managing to beat them through their own bull headedness - but no one else would be able to either. The Running of the Leaves had mostly become a contest between these two, the third place becoming the new first for the other citizens of Ponyville.
Both of them finished their plates at once and instantly turned towards each other, daring smiles on their faces.
"See you at the finish line," Rainbow smirked.
"Don't worry, I'll be waving to you all the while you catch up," Applejack joked back. A few years ago, Rainbow might have taken it as an insult, but by now their rivalry had turned far more friendly.
They jumped out of their seats, ready to get out and race.
You had barely made any progress getting out of the gargantuan sneaker. The world blurred before your eyes, as the heavy scent of sweat nearly drove you into unconsciousness. Only when the earth started to quake once more, adrenaline shot through your body. You knew what was coming next - and you wouldn't be able to bear to be trapped in this shoe! You had to get out, quick!
Trying your best to power through the stench, you grabbed hold of the shoe's wall and started climbing. Thankfully, they were worn down enough that your hands could easily slip into the cracks of the material. Still, this advantage was nearly useless because of your lack of strength. Additionally, each step of the giantesses' steps shook the ground, threatening to make you fall back towards the sole.
"You comin', Twilight?" The gigantic, orange mare shouted as she got closer. Instantly, a third set of footsteps made your life hell. You could barely hold on, anymore.
Then, a shadow fell over you, and with horror, you saw the thick, orange sole block out the sky. Sweat pearled down the giantess' ankle, making the matted fur glisten. Mercilessly, it came closer, until...
