While you were walking you heard a growing number of hoofbeats behind you that stopped whenever you stopped.
You weren't imagining things either, this happened every single time you stopped or paused to take a break.
After about the fifth time this happened you decided that you're going to be clever and stop to tie your shoe while surreptitiously gazing at your rearview, and what you saw surprised you.
