Lupe’s beat-up silver minivan rolled up to her little LA bungalow around two. The lawn needed cutting. A faded Virgen de Guadalupe sticker peeled off the bumper. Peach stucco, the same cracked walk, the same screen door that never quite latched. The house he’d spent those high-school weekends in: laundry, novelas, beans, feet.

She killed the engine and sat a second with both hands on the wheel, as if the drive had finally caught up with her.

“We’re home, mijo.”

She fished him out of the blouse and carried him up the walk in her palm. Inside: cool tile after the hot van, last night’s spices still in the walls, a box fan ticking in the living room, copper pots hanging over the stove the way they always had. A small radio waited on the counter, off. The novela would come later.

She set her purse down and him beside it.

“Stay put.”

Then she tucked him back into the blouse anyway, because the kitchen was no place for a three-inch man on a cutting board she was about to use. He rode the valley while she cooked like the drive had been nothing. Beans on the back burner with onion and a pinch of cumin. Carnitas hissing in the skillet. Empanadas already in the oven from a batch she’d made that morning, reheated without asking if he was hungry. Of course he was. The air went thick with pork fat and chile. Her stomach answered the smell with a low wet roll she didn’t comment on.

She talked while she stirred. Juan’s union friends and the way he never called when he said he would. Elena’s hip. How the rec center had moved Zumba half an hour later and she still showed up early so she could claim her spot in the front row. Max listened with his cheek against her skin. The house did what it always did. It made his life feel smaller than the shrink already had.

Dinner was on the couch with the TV already on. Amor Eterno, one of her absolute favorites. Dramatic music swelled as a tall, square-jawed actor in a perfectly tailored suit swept a weeping woman into his arms.

She settled back. Her body sank into the cushions and pressed her breasts around him. She set a thimble of food in front of him. Steam rose off beans and carnitas.

“Eat up, mijo. You need your strength.”

He didn’t need to be told twice. Tiny handfuls of carnitas and beans—still massive in his hands. It tasted stupidly good. Familiar. Exactly like every high-school weekend she’d babysat him. The flavor brought a fresh spike of loss.

He hated how the warm heavy comfort of her chest made it almost bearable. Pathetic. He’d finally escaped Victoria and Izzy, and one party later he was right back to being babysat by Abuela. He tried to hold the anger. Another rumble from her belly and the soft jiggle when she laughed at the novela wore him down.

Then she leaned back, spread her thick thighs, and ripped another long hissing fart straight into the couch.

FRRRRT—blblblblblt…

The stink smacked him in the face like a hot eggy slap. It rolled over his food, straight up his nose, and killed his appetite on the spot. His eyes watered. He coughed. He flailed a hand like that would do anything. It never had, even at full size.

“Oops. Sorry, mijo.” She didn’t even slow down chewing. “These beans go right through me. But you keep eating. Abuela made it special for you.” She nudged a crumb of tortilla closer with her fingertip. “Just like old times, eh?”

He shoved another bite in, trying not to gag. The novela blasted—passionate kisses, dramatic slaps, tall dark perfect men who were everything he wasn’t. A shrunken naked loser buried in his abuela’s chest. Somewhere in the swampy fog the sticky closeness wouldn’t shake loose.

When the credits rolled, another episode started automatically. She let out a long contented sigh that lifted him and set him down again. “Ay, these writers know how to drag it out.”

Before he could ask if they could watch something he might like for a change, two thick fingers pinched him around the waist. She unbuttoned the top of the blouse. The valley opened wider, glistening with kitchen heat and the long drive.

“Housecoat time.” Like he had a vote.

She stood just long enough to peel off the blouse and yank on the old pink housecoat from the closet beside the couch—the same threadbare one she’d worn every weekend she babysat him in high school. Softer now. Stinkier. Rosewater, empanadas, lived-in musk. She plopped back down. The couch groaned. She dropped him into the newly exposed abyss and mashed her breasts together around him with both hands.

“Much better. Now you can really watch with me.”

The new episode opened on another confrontation. She was hooked immediately, gasping and muttering at the screen in Spanish. Every time the hero grabbed the heroine and kissed her, she looked down and smirked.

“Look at him, mijo. Tall. Strong. Confident. That’s the kind of man who knows how to handle a woman.” A playful bounce, nearly drowning him. “Not like my little three-inch Maxie, hiding between his abuela’s boobs like a scared little hamster. ¿Qué pensaría Izzy if she saw you right now?”

His face burned. He tried to glare. The motion only buried his nose deeper. “Abuela… don’t—”

“Too late.” The laugh vibrated through her chest into his bones. “Your sister wanted you bad, you know.” A fond eye-roll with a sharp edge under it.

She patted his head with one fingertip, smushing him deeper as another wave of stink rolled up. “Oops. Sorry, mijo. Abuela 101, lesson one: when a girl has a booty like mine, it’s not just for show.”

She plucked a tiny piece of carnitas from her plate and held it to his lips like a baby bird. He hesitated a second, then took it. The taste was perfect. The smell was hell.

They stayed like that through the second episode, then the third. By then her belly was gurgling louder than the TV. She yawned, stretched, and moved him down from her chest to the soft warm shelf of her lower belly, right above the housecoat waistband. Hotter there. Slightly damp. Still rumbling from dinner.

She let out one last fart—silent this time, so thick and warm his eyes fluttered.

ppppppppfffffffffrrrrrrrt…

The stink wrapped him like a sweaty blanket. He wasn’t even fighting it anymore. Her hand settled over him like a living seatbelt. Not safety, exactly. Something close. For the first time since the coffee table, he almost felt home.

When the credits rolled on the third episode she seemed perfectly content to keep going. She stretched her legs with a low sigh and propped her bare feet on the ottoman. Then, with a slow teasing smile, she looked down.

“Ay, mijo… my feet are feeling awfully sore after all that driving and searching for you this morning.”

His stomach tightened. He knew that tone. He’d spent half of high school dreading it. Every weekend at Lupe’s, foot rubs had been nonnegotiable. Part of earning your keep, she’d say, patting the couch. The demand hung in the air, casual as ever.

Before he could squeak a protest she scooped him off her belly and plopped him on the ottoman, right in the blast zone. Her feet loomed—calloused, arches like canyons, toes like fat sausages—casting a shadow that smelled like humiliation. Sharp vinegary sweat. Old sneaker leather. Earthy foot-funk crust from a day of stomping around. Same as always, cranked to eleven. His eyes watered before he even touched her.

Naked. Shrunken. Rubbing his abuela’s feet like a pet. Was this really it now? The humiliation crawled. Her heat rolled over him, thick and swampy, and something shifted. Maybe it was pathetic. It was still the closest thing to safety he’d felt since morning. Better the devil he knew than whatever waited beyond this couch.

“Go on, then.” She wiggled her toes, slow and deliberate. “Abuela’s waiting.”

He knelt. Palms sank into the warm damp meat of her right sole. Hot. Sticky. A little slimy. He dug into the arch first, shoving with his whole body like he was kneading dough. His arms burned right away. He didn’t dare stop.

Back in high school he’d told himself this was practice. Someday a real girlfriend would want him touching her feet—not just chores for Abuela. Lying there, kneading her sweaty soles, he’d pretend he was training for a future where he wasn’t such a loser. Some cute girl at college. After a long day. Something normal. The joke was on him now. No more late-night gaming. No more pretending he could become something else.

She spread her toes, slow and lazy. The vinegary stink hit again, stronger, leftover bean fart riding along. The hesitation slipped. His hands fell into the old rhythm.

Whether he liked it or not, rubbing Lupe’s feet had always been one of the only things he’d ever been any good at. Every bump and dip in the arch—he knew them. Heat off her body. The novela blaring. Her humming through the ottoman. Safe. Simple. Pathetic. He grit his teeth. Why did his hands know this job better than his brain knew how to fight it?

Her toes curled, brushing his chest and shoulders. “You’re such a good helper, mijo. I’m not gonna lie. This is half the reason I wanted to take you home for myself.”

He paused, hands still on her sole. He looked up between her toes. “You’re joking, right?”

The laugh rolled through her whole body. “You’re cute, mijo.” A gentle flex, pressing him into the ball. “And I didn’t say stop.”

He returned to work. Silent. Passionate arguments in Spanish. Orchestral swells. Minutes slipped. Right foot to left. Heel, then toes. The smell never faded. It just became the air. Every so often she hummed in relief.

She shifted. A long hissing one slipped out underneath her, warm and thick with beans and carnitas. The cloud rolled across the ottoman and wrapped him. He froze half a second, then kept rubbing. Her eyes stayed on the screen. Neither of them said a word.

Eventually her voice went softer. Almost nostalgic. “Mijo… do you remember the last weekend you came to stay with me?”

“Yeah.” He didn’t stop working the left arch. “Back in June, right?”

Victoria on a girls’ trip. Izzy got the house and threw a three-day rager for the graduating class—everyone except him. Blurry Snapchat stories: keg stands, makeouts, somebody throwing up. While the party raged six hours north, Max rode the bus down here. He helped her fold laundry. They scrubbed the kitchen. They watched novelas on this exact couch, and every night he rubbed her feet. She cooked beans all three evenings. Especially gassy that weekend—loud, lingering bursts she never excused. Cheeks burning, eyes watering, he endured while she patted his head and called him her best helper.

She hummed like she’d followed the same memory. “You were such a good boy that whole weekend. Izzy out there acting wild, and you right here being useful. Helping around the house. Keeping me company. Never complained once.” Her toes flexed around him—not hard enough to hurt. Just enough. “Even when all those frijoles got the better of me. You just kept rubbing like nothing happened.”

She didn’t need to tell him. He remembered the living room filling cloud after eggy cloud. Hold breath until the lungs screamed. Exhale. Thumbs back into the soles. Temporary, he’d told himself. College would be different. He couldn’t have been more wrong.

“You know, mijo… you’re the only man I’ve ever met—well, besides your abuelo—who never seemed to mind all of my… aromas.”

Like weather. Toes dragged across his chest. Foot stink and that last fart hung sour in the air. I don’t mind them? I’m drowning in them. Under the humiliation, the same sticky comfort. Her voice. Her rules. Her lazy dominance. Nothing had changed except there was no bus home. No dorm. No escape. Just this.

He kept rubbing. She settled deeper, one hand on her belly. Another soft gurgle rolled through her gut, unhurried, promising more. He didn’t look up. He pressed harder, the way he always had.

The episode ended. The next one began. She let out a long, satisfied breath.

“See?” Almost to herself. “Abuela 101, mijo. You’re already learning.”

He didn’t answer. Words didn’t matter at this scale. Her feet, the ottoman, the damp haze of her body. He was far from at peace with the lot he’d drawn. Close enough to keep his hands moving without being told.

She spread her toes again. The faint gold cross at her neck caught the lamplight as she reached for another sip of wine. Outside, the LA night settled. Inside, the novela kept going, and Max kept rubbing, the rhythm steady and automatic, like he had never left.

The fourth episode was still going when her phone started buzzing on the side table—a ringtone he recognized immediately as FaceTime. She didn’t look at the screen. She just swiped, like she already knew.

“¡Hola, mija!” Warm. Syrupy. The camera framed her round smiling face and the top half of the pink housecoat, cleavage spilling generously into view. “Just in time. We were finishing up dinner.”

Victoria took up most of the screen. Izzy was squished in next to her, both of them wedged on the couch back home in Sunnyvale. Victoria looked relieved. Izzy looked like she’d already smelled blood.

“Hey, Mamá. Just checking in. How’s Max doing? Settling in okay?”

Lupe’s eyes sparkled. “Oh, he’s settling in perfectly, mija. Aren’t you, mijo?”

He barely had time to panic before she tilted the phone down. Past her chest. Over her belly. Onto the ottoman. She even switched to 2x zoom so they could see him working her left foot like his life depended on it.

His hands stopped mid-rub. His reflection in the preview: naked, stuck between two toes the size of sofa cushions. Lupe’s personal pint-sized foot-slave.

Victoria’s eyes went wide. Then she burst out laughing. “Oh my God, Mom. You already have him back on foot duty?”

Izzy was louder. Meaner. “Holy shit, look at him go! Little Maxie’s right back where he belongs—rubbing Abuela’s crusty old feet like it’s his full-time job. Did you even let him eat first, or did you just plop him down the second you got home?”

Lupe kept the phone in place. Her toes flexed, curling around his shoulders and pressing his chest into the sticky ball of her foot.

“¡Ay, por favor! He offered, didn’t you, mijo? After rescuing him from all those big, scary college kids, the least he can do is make Abuela’s feet feel better.”

He wished he could sink into the ottoman. Victoria and Izzy were watching. Naked. Helpless. Too familiar.

Victoria wiped a tear, still giggling. “I can’t believe it. Max, sweetie, blink twice if she’s making you do this against your will.”

Izzy leaned in, shark grin. “Nah, he loves it. Don’t you, lil bro? Bet those big old feet smell even better when you’re tiny. Come on, give us a thumbs-up. Or are your hands too busy worshipping?”

Lupe’s toes squeezed, mashing his arms to his sides. “He’s a good boy. Already remembered exactly how Abuela likes it—nice and deep in the arches, lots of pressure. Just like old times. Isn’t that right, mijo?”

Nothing came out. She gave the camera one last teasing wiggle, dragging hot slick skin across his chest like she was showing off a pet trick.

“Alright, alright,” Victoria managed. “Well. I’ve got some news on my end too.” Papers rustled offscreen. “Admin took the withdrawal. Medical. They’re not putting him back in classes. Housing and tuition are still a fight. Legal wants quiet language. Partial recovery if we sign and nobody talks. Money might come later. Might not.”

Izzy snorted, face taking up half the screen. “Pretty sure that’s just Ventus making sure we don’t sue their asses off.”

Victoria’s smile softened into something almost maternal. “So if you’re willing to keep taking care of him for a while, Mom… Izzy and I talked on the drive home. This shrinking thing—I think it’s the push I’ve been waiting for. I’ve been dying to get back into modeling. Real gigs, not just catalogs. With Max taken care of, I can focus without worrying about him every five minutes.” She glanced toward the tiny figure under Lupe’s sole. Softer. “And honestly? It looks like he’s in exactly the right hands. Or should I say, under the right feet.”

Lupe’s eyebrows went up. Then the knowing grin. She flexed, grinding his chest deeper into her sole. “Ay, mija. I’m not about to look a gift foot masseuse in the mouth.” A wink at the camera.

He let out a low involuntary grumble. She tilted the phone to catch his face between her toes.

“¿Y tú, mijo? Does this work for you? Staying here with Abuela. Getting spoiled rotten while your mamá chases her dreams.”

His stomach dropped. They were still watching, already sure she’d wrapped him around her finger in less than a day. If he ran back now, the hamster cage wouldn’t stay a joke. At least here the rules were old ones.

He swallowed. The squeak came out defeated. “Y-yeah. It works.”

“And Izzy wants 214,” Victoria added, almost as an afterthought.

“Zeke said the bottom bunk’s sad without a roommate,” Izzy said. Sweet.

His hands were still pinned. His old desk. Her posters. The Steam library he’d already mourned once.

“We’re looking at rooms,” Victoria said. “Nothing’s signed.”

“Yet,” Izzy said.

Lupe tipped the phone back up. Warm. Triumphant. “He’s with me. That’s settled.”

Victoria sighed, satisfied enough. “That’s my Max. We’ll let you two get back to… whatever this is. Call us tomorrow, Mom. Love you both.”

“Love you too, mija.” A kiss at the screen. “Say goodnight to your little brother, Izzy.”

Izzy blew a mocking kiss. “Night-night, foot-boy. Don’t forget to lick between the toes.”

Lupe ended the call with a tap and set the phone down. She looked at him—still pinned under her foot, cheeks burning, eyes glassy—and gave him the softest, most affectionate smile of the night.

“Everybody wins, eh, mijo?” Warm as ever. A justification, not a fact. “Now… don’t stop. Abuela’s got another episode to watch.”

She wiggled her toes, inviting him back in. The familiar vinegary heat rolled over him like a blanket. He swallowed, lowered his head, and pressed his hands back into the warm, damp flesh.

Their laughter kept echoing. Shame pulsed through him with every stroke. He was theirs now—officially enough—and every obedient pass of his palms against her sole only sealed it tighter. Deep inside, the same little high-school voice whispered that this was safe. Familiar.

He didn’t call it home.

He just didn’t take his hands off her foot.
