Jill, clad in her usual jeans and sweatshirt, sat on the front edge of her desk, tapping her sneakered heels lightly against the gray, semi-metallic surface, her eyes on her four subordinates. They stood in a rough line in front of her, waiting.
She patted a stack of four manila envelopes on the desktop beside her. "These envelopes," she began, trying to make herself sound authoritative, "contain information that is going to be the focus of this office's work for the foreseeable future. And we'll start to go over them in a moment, then I'll outline our objectives and how I hope to achieve them."
Jezel snorted, elbowing Lauren, who stood beside her. "Miss Tiny's in charge," the older woman muttered, rolling her eyes.
Lauren nodded, not quite managing to suppress a sardonic grin.
Jill sighed softly. I expected that, she told herself wearily. They don't respect me at all.
Jill had spent the entire night thinking about her plan of action here, trying to decide how best to do this job she'd been thrust into, somehow simultaneously learning the job, and gaining the respect of those who worked under her.
The ten inch girl took a breath, then said, "First order of business," she paused, looking up at the giant redhead. "Jezel, you're out. Clear your stuff out of your desk by the end of the day."
The older woman stared down at Jill, blinking. Her mouth opened, then closed. Then it opened again, though no words came out. Jezel looked as though someone had just punched her in the gut. Hard.
"You..you...," Jezel stammered, her face beginning to turn red. She began to shake her head, a tentative smile touching her lips. "You can't do that, you ridiculous, tiny! Do you know how long I've been here? I've-"
Jill patted another set of four files on the other side of her, nodding. "Yeah, I know, Jezel. Five years, twenty-three days, and..." The diminutive girl consulted her own tiny wristwatch. "Twenty-seven minutes. Happy anniversary. Now get the Hell out of my office."
Jill saw it before it happened. She saw it in the tensing of the older woman's body, in the twitch at the corner of her eye. So when Jezel lunged toward the desk, hands twisted into claws and reaching out for her, a guttural growl ripping up her throat, Jill was not surprised in the least.
And, luckily for Jill, Mac was apparently not surprised, either.
Jill watched as her scruffy Knight in Shining Armor grabbed Jezel around the middle, and hauled back hard, just barely pulling her away in time, as Jezel's clawed fingers grabbed the air near Jill's nose. The enraged redhead kicked and screamed as Mac dragged her back, her heels clacking loudly against the gray metallic floor as she was pulled, backward, across the room.
"Let me go! Let me go, you lunatic!" Jezel screamed at Mac, but fixing her gaze on Jill. "You can't do this to me, you little shit!"
"Can, and did," said Jill calmly, reaching out with both hands to tug Jezel's file from the top of the pile, and setting it aside. "We'll get your file to Human Resources so they can reassign you."
"This is not going to happen!" Jezel screamed, struggling a bit less now as she seemed to realize she couldn't escape Mac's grasp. "You'll see, you little twat!"
"Best leave now, Jezel," Mac told her quietly, loosening his grasp on her. "Miss Keeper's the boss now."
Jezel twisted out of Mac's arms, then spun toward the door. She looked angrily at her former co-workers, then sneered down at Jill. She grinned. "Okay. Okay, shorty. I'm going already. But you haven't heard the last of me. Do you hear me, tiny?"
Jill didn't return the hate-filled gaze, instead began fiddling with the next personnel file on the desk top. She was feeling a little weak in the knees, and she was not sure she wanted to look at the fuming giantess right now. Jill put what she hoped sounded like a smooth calm in her voice, and said, "I hear you, Jezel. Now you better get down to HR, pronto. I'm sure you'll do better with your next boss."
Jezel made an angry scoffing noise, then turned on her heels and headed out the door.
Before she was out of ear shot, Big Mic called out, "Bye, mistress!" He tipped a wink at Jill, the hard lines in his face morphing into something that was almost handsome . "Don't let the door close on your ass on the way out!"
