“Kelly” said Cindy looking down at her watch “It’s eight. You should have been in the tub half an hour ago.”
“Do I have too?” she asked.
“Yes, Kelly, go get washed up.” said Cindy.
“But I wanna stay and hang out with you guys!", she complained.
“Kelly, when mom and dad aren’t home I’m in charge,” Cindy replied, “now you go take your bath I’ll bring in your pajamas in a minute” she added.
“Ok” said Kelly reluctantly heading out of the room.
“Guys I think Kelly has a good idea,” Jill said.
Jackie and Cindy looked at Jill surprised “Jill what are you saying?” asked Cindy.
“I’m saying that I have mixed feelings about my mom right now and I think a little time away from home would do me some good.”
“But why stay here with the biggies? You can stay with me", Jackie suggested.
“Sorry Jackie, but we’ve been friends for years so that’s the first place she’ll look.”
Jackie sneered. “I guess that makes sense."
“Well I guess you can stay here as long as you want,” said Cindy with a smile.
“Thanks Cindy. Hey, can I borrow your phone? I need to call my house.” said Jill.
“Sure.” Cindy took her phone out of her pocket and placed it in front of Jill. “Hey Jackie, want to come help me pick out Kelly’s pajamas?"
“Why would I want to…?” Jackie began before realizing the idea was to give Jill some privacy “oh umm sure” she said as she jumped into Cindy’s awaiting hand.
Jill slowly pushed the buttons with her hands and waited as the phone rang it went to voicemail. “Hi mom”, said Jill tearfully, “it’s me Jill I’m calling to tell you something. First of all I want to say I love you I always have and I always will. But I can’t say I approve of what you do and I can’t be the daughter you want me to be so I guess that this is good bye, because I’m not coming home. Now don’t worry, I found a place to stay I’ll be ok and I love you. Good bye.” Jill then hanged up.
At that moment Cindy came back in the room. “You ok?” she asked handing Jill a piece of tissue.
"I will be." said Jill wiping her eyes. “Where’s Jackie?” Jill asked.
“She’s waiting downstairs. I’m going to run her home on my bike. Think you can handle Kelly for half an hour or so?”
“Yeah, where is she?” asked Jill.
“In her room. she’s really excited.” answered Cindy.
Jill giggled “So you told her the good news?”
Cindy nodded. “She’s straitening out her bed sheets as we speak. She wants you to sleep with her tonight.”
Jill giggled again. "I would like that."
“Well then hop on” said Cindy opening her hand. Jill obliged.
“Hey wait... Kelly doesn’t move in her sleep, does she?” asked Jill.
Cindy smiled. “No. Sleeping is practically the only time that girl is perfectly still.” Jill giggled once more.
“Hey I just thought of something... what about school?” Cindy asked.
Jill hadn’t thought of that. she couldn’t go back to her school. Her mother would surely look there. “I don’t know”, she said.
“Well technically you are still registered at the big high school.”
“I don’t know Cindy, last time I went there I was nearly raped and almost became a pet.” Jill said with a shiver in her voice.
“Yeah but this time you’d have me to protect you. Besides it’s the last thing your mom would expect. Besides it would give you an excuse if Kelly ever wanted to take you in for show and tell”, Cindy joked.
Jill giggled. “Ok. I guess we could try.”
Kelly’s bedroom was a pretty stereotypical little girls room. Inside, the walls were white, there was a toy chest at the foot of the bed, a dollhouse in one corner of the room next to which was a stroller for baby dolls, next to the closet was a chest that was filled with clothes for dress up, a small table with a plastic tea set, and of course Kelly herself was sitting up in bed wearing pink pajamas and looking eager about her company for the night.
“Hi Jill” said Kelly excitedly. Jill smiled “Hi Kelly”, she responded.
“Now Kelly, before I let Jill down, what did I tell you about her?” asked Cindy.
“Jill is a person not a toy, always ask her before you pick her up, and be careful not to hurt her by accident.” Kelly recited.
“Good girl.” said Cindy as she let Jill jump on the bed to join Kelly. After Cindy’s departure Kelly quickly fell asleep and exhausted from her day Jill followed soon after.
