Cindy, Jill, and Jackie watched as Tim pushed a hand into one of the glove inserts, and reached into the cage for one of the little people. The little girl was closest to that side of the cage, so he went after her first.
"Noooo!" screamed the tiny, red-haired girl, attempting to run for the back of the cage. Her efforts, were, however, in vain because the plastic glove was long enough to reach every corner of the little enclosure, and the little girl was soon trapped in Tim's grasping fingers.
"Look how much this female struggles," said Tim, matter-of-factly, holding the small teen up near the front of the cage and close to his face. He gripped her casually, turning her this way and that, examining her from several angles. He moved his two bottom fingers up her body, causing the little white toga to ride up, exposing her tiny, pale thighs. This caused her to kick her legs even harder, struggling frantically to free herself. "I'ts really quite amazing. And they look so much like us. Very nearly human."
"What...what do you mean, nearly human?" Cindy replied, unable to keep the indignant tone out of her voice. "They are human, Tim. They're just very small humans, that's all."
The bespectacled boy grinned at Cindy. "Yeah, I've heard that before. Probably what I should have expected from a somebody in Behavioral. The fact is, Cindy, they are so much smaller than we are, we don't really know how to classify them. Over at Genetics, the prevailing theory is that we'll find significant genetic differences between us and them."
"Let me go!" the tiny girl yelled, now pounding her fists on the fingers that imprisoned her. "You have no right to do this to us! Let me go! Stop squeezing so tight! You're hurting meeee!" The girl's last word turned to a piteous, high-pitched wail.
Cindy was starting to get angry now, and frightened for the girl's safety. "Let her down, Tim! Don't you hear her? You're hurting her!"
"Yeah!" the small boy called up, as he moved toward Tim's huge hand. "Leave her alone! She didn't do anything to you!"
Tim looked down at the approaching tiny boy, an amused expression on his face. "Cindy, you're getting too emotional here. To study these little beings, you need scientific detachment. They're not real people, and that means, since they're test subjects, we can treat them any way we choose, in the name of science."
Cindy's hand rose off the table so fast, that even she was a little surprised by it. From the small space near the zipper of the pack, Jill and Jackie ducked involuntarily even though Cindy's hand flew high above them. The slap connected high on Tim's left cheek, knocking the startled boy back, nearing knocking him out of his chair.
"What...what...Cindy...why did you do that?" Tim looked completely dazed, and maybe a little scared.
"Put her down!" Cindy shouted, leaning toward the startled boy. And, though he stood a full four or five inches taller than the angry girl, Tim gulped nervously and opened his fingers.
The tiny girl fell several inches, landing on the hard Plexiglas floor of the cage. The little boy ran over immediately, taking the sobbing girl into his arms. Cindy looked closely at the two small people. As she saw the little girl move quickly up into the boy's embrace, it appeared that she moved fairly well, and was apparently unhurt. She continued to sob softly into the little boy's chest.
"Cindy, I-" Tim began.
Cindy cut him off with a glare. "They're people, Tim. Just like you and me."
"Well, I don't know-"
"Yes, you do."
Tim was silent, looking glumly at his feet.
Cindy caught a movement out of the corner of her eye. Down on the pack, there was a little piece of paper sticking out of the space near the zipper. Casually, Cindy reached a hand down an plucked up the tiny sheet.
It was torn piece of white, lined paper. It had come from the little notebook in her pack, and, in tiny, hastily-scrawled letters it read, simply: WE KNOW THEM.
Cindy stared down at the two tiny faces that looked out at her from inside her pack. Both Jill and Jackie were nodding up at her. Almost imperceptibly, Cindy nodded back.
"Tim?" she said, her voice calming a little
The long-haired boy looked up.
"I want you to go, Tim. But before you do, I want to show you something." She then noticed Tim's gloved hand still inside the cage, suspended over the little people. "Get your hand out of there, Tim."
Tim looked at his hand as though surprised too still see it there. He withdrew it from the cage.
Cindy nodded, then slowly slid her hand into the other glove. She laid her hand gently on the cage floor, on the opposite side of the enclosure from the little people, palm up. They jumped a little when the huge hand entered their space, holding each other tighter.
"Don't be scared," Cindy said, as softly as she could. "I promise I won't hurt you. My name is Cindy. What are your names?"
The two little people just gaped at the giantess.
"Come on," Cindy cooed, smiling. "I don't bite."
The two tiny teens looked at each other. Then the boy looked up at Cindy. "I'm Nathan."
The little girl, now mostly done with her crying, looked up, too. "I...I'm Sally."
Cindy nodded. "Very nice to meet you. Nathan. Sally. Now, we all got of on the wrong foot here, I think. Tim here is just about to leave, but before he does, I want to show him something." Cindy wiggled her fingers slightly. "Please, could you two just come over and get on my hand?"
The tiny couple didn't move.
"Come on, you two. I just want to show Tim that we can all be civil here, and treat each other with respect." Cindy turned her head a little, so that Tim couldn't see her face. Then she stared down at the tiny people.
Please, she mouthed down to them.
Both the boy and the girl looked up at the giantess, confused and more than a little scared.
Please, she mouthed again, a gentle smile on her lips.
Hesitating a moment longer, the teens rose and started walking across the little cage. Hand in hand, they walked until they reached Cindy's upturned palm. Casting one more nervous glance up at the giantess, they settled themselves into a sitting position in the center of Cindy's palm.
"Good," Cindy said, raising the tiny pair slowly up to eye level. She threw a wink down to Jill and Jackie. "Now we can start all over again. Thank you, Nathan. Thank you, Sally."
Nathan said, "Sure." Sally just nodded, smiling tentatively.
Cindy turned to Tim, who was staring at the scene before him, his mouth gaping. "Now do you see, Tim? Real people. Please treat them with respect from now on, okay?"
Tim began to nod slowly. "Uh...sure, Cindy. Sorry if I was out of line. I guess this is more your line of work, dealing with the subjects...er...with the little people here."
Cindy noticed, with some annoyance that the apology was directed entirely to her, and not to the little people at all. Tim genuinely didn't believe they deserved any consideration or respect from him. I wonder, thought Cindy, if everybody here thinks of little people that way?
Tim stood. "Well, I guess I better be getting back to work. I only have two hours after school every day for my work-study time here, so I better get to it. Nice to meet you, Cindy."
"You, too, Tim." Cindy managed a smile as Tim walked over to the door, which opened as he approached. "Sorry about the slap. Kind of a reflex reaction, I guess."
"That's okay," Tim said, trying a smile as he walked through the door. "Guess I had it coming. See you around."
Then the door closed behind him.
Cindy turned back to the tiny couple. She lowered them down to the floor of the cage. Without having to be told, they climbed off her palm, standing side by side, holding hands and staring up at the giantess.
"Sorry about that guys," Cindy said, turning toward the pack. She grasped the zipper, and carefully pulled it all the way back along it's track, glad to finally be able to free her friends. Jill and Jackie climbed out of the pack and stepped onto the smooth surface of the table.
"Hi, guys," Jackie said as she stepped over in front of the Plexiglas cage. Jill followed her friend over, standing next to her, and looking down at the two smaller teens.
The girl stared up at the two Amazon-sized girls. "Jackie? Jill?"
Jackie nodded. "Yeah. Good to see you two. Jill, this is Sally's little brother, Nathan."
Jill smiled. "Nice to meet you, Nathan."
The little boy, also red-haired, raised a hand. Nathan was a bit shorter than his sister. "Hi, Jill, nice to meet you."
"So you all went to school together?" All four little people turned to look up at Cindy.
"Yeah, Cindy," said Jackie. "Sally was in our grade, and Nathan was a year behind. Sally and I were friends. In fact..." Here Jackie looked sadly down at the smaller girl. "Sally, I gave the eulogy at your funeral."
The tiny girl blinked up at her friend. "My...funeral?"
Jackie nodded. "According to the newspaper accounts, both you and Nathan were attacked just outside the school grounds. By a dog." Jackie closed her eyes, sighing heavily. "Oh, Sally. They said you were both just torn apart by that dog! They said you were swallowed whole, with only a few bloody scraps of clothes left behind. And we all believed it. Sally, I'm so glad you're alive! You too, Nathan." Jackie placed a hand onto the cool Plexiglas wall. Sally reached up a hand that was half the size of her friend's, and laid it on her side of the glass.
Sally looked up at Cindy, eyes pleading. "Could you get us out of here, Cindy?"
Cindy leaned down closer to the cage, peering in at Sally. "Of course, Sally! How do I open this thing?"
"There's a catch on either side of the cage, down along the bottom edge. Just reach down and feel for them."
Cindy did as she was instructed. She fumbled along the smooth edge between the wall and the floor, until she found two slightly raised tabs on the bottom edge of each side wall. When she pressed the tabs, she heard a small pop! and the roof of the cage sprang upward.
"Good going, Cindy!" exclaimed Nathan, jumping up and down.
Cindy grinned, reaching into the cage. "No problem, Nathan." She lifted up the tiny brother and sister, one in each hand, then set them gently on the table next to Jill and Jackie. Jackie leaned down, scooping the child-sized girl into her arms and hugging her close to her. Jill smiled down at Nathan, reaching down and ruffling his short hair playfully.
"Hey, guys," Cindy said, opening her pack wide. "I think we better get out of here. No telling when somebody else will come in here."
"Cindy's right," replied Sally. "Put me down, okay, Jackie? We gotta go."
"Well," said Jackie, extending her arms and holding the little teen out in front of her. "I really don't want to, but okay." She set Sally down on her feet.
Cindy patted her pack. "Okay, guys, get inside!"
The four little people started moving to the pack.
"So, Cindy," said Sally, pausing in front of the pack opening. "What's the plan? How do we get past security upstairs?"
""I'll just hide you all in my pack. No problem."
Sally shook her head. "Big problem, actually, Cindy. They'll search your pack."
Cindy looked surprised. "They didn't search it on the way in."
Sally nodded. "Yeah, usually they don't. Not on the way in. I mean, there's metal detectors, bomb detectors, all that stuff, so they're not really worried about stuff getting smuggled in. But they are worried about somebody taking something, or someone, out of here."
"Crap," said Cindy.
All of them, one big person, and four little ones, were silent for several moments. It was Nathan, the youngest, who finally broke the silence.
"I have an idea, Cindy. I think it could work, but...," the small boy paused, looking up at the giantess, embarrassed. "Don't get mad, Cindy, but maybe you could sneek us out under your clothes."
Cindy smiled, coloring a bit, a little embarrassed herself. "Well...I guess if you guys would want to do that, I don't mind."
"Oh, no way!" Jackie cried. "No offense, big girl, but I don't want to do any traveling hidden under your clothes! That's kind of weird, you know?"
Cindy spread her hands in a helpless gesture. "Got any better ideas, Jackie?"
Jackie crossed her arms, thinking. "Well, no."
Jill stepped forward. "Let's do it, Cindy."
"But-"
"No 'buts', Jackie," said Jill. "We've got no choice. Where would you hide us, Cindy?"
"Well..."
"Before you decide that," Sally interrupted. "If we escape like this, it could all come back on Cindy, especially since Tim can place her here shortly before the escape."
"What do you suggest?" asked Jackie.
Sally held up a finger. "This could help. Cindy, could you unplug that calculator, and pull it over close to the table edge?"
Cindy shrugged. "Okay I guess." Cindy did as she was told.
"Thanks." Sally moved over to the calculator, which to her was about as big as a king-sized bed. She leaned down and scooped up several coils of the appliance cord, and heaved it over the side of the table. The rest of the coils followed, dragging the cord over the side and down to the floor.
Cindy laughed. "That's clever, Sally. They may actually think somebody just left the cage open, and you guys just climbed down the cord to the floor. Then, somehow, got out."
"Hmmm," said Jackie. "A little far- fetched, but I guess somebody could buy it, if they're not too bright.
"It's the government, Jackie." replied Jill, smiling.
Jackie nodded. "Okay. What the Hell. Let's go. How we gonna do this, Cindy?"
"Well, I've got a couple of ideas." Cindy smiled, looking a little embarrassed. She reached over the four little people, who, out of instinct, ducked to their knees. But her hand passed over them and settled on something on the table behind them.
To their dismay, the little people saw Cindy pick up a tape dispenser.
Fifteen minutes later, Cindy was back out in the hall, walking toward the elevator. A casual observer would not notice anything unusual about her - just a pretty, young girl wearing jeans and a baggy sweatshirt, and carrying the typical school pack over her shoulder.
If you watched her for a few moments, however, you might notice two Barbie-sized bulges occasionally becoming visible in the area between her breasts and her belt. Also, with a very close look at the thick ponytail that lay on her neck, one could pick out two five-inch long sections of bundled hair that were a bit wider than the rest.
As Cindy was approaching the elevator, she saw a women coming along the corridor in the opposite direction. She wore the white, starched uniform of a nurse. She was, Cindy saw, slim, pretty and dark-haired, and probably in her mid-twenties. She also happened to be about sixteen inches tall.
Cindy whispered the information to her hidden friends.
"God!" hissed Jackie. "It must be Nurse Granville!"
"Cindy, listen," It was Sally, the upper lump in Cindy's ponytail. "Cindy, around here, all little people, no matter their rank, defer to all big people, no matter how old (or young). That means all little people who work here expect to be ordered around by any big person, even children."
Cindy only nodded slightly, as the small nurse stepped up next to her at the elevator.
"Hello, ma'am!" The tiny nurse called up to Cindy.
Cindy stared down at the knee-high girl, keeping her face carefully neutral, but inwardly enjoying the situation: a woman ten years her senior felt obligated to call her ma'am.
"Are you supposed to be out here all by yourself, little girl?"
The pretty nurse smiled. "Yes, ma'am! Would you like to see my badge?" The small woman placed a hand under the badge that was pinned to her chest, and held it up to the giantess.
"Yes," said Cindy, going to one knee. "Here. It can't see that little thing. Come here."
Cindy reached out a hand, encircling the girl's tiny, slim waist. As Cindy lifted her up to her face, the smaller-than-a-baby-sized nurse lay quite unperturbed in Cindy's grasp, just kicking her little legs absently as she was held. Cindy closed her thumb and forefinger on the tiny badge, pretending to examine it, The giantess made a point of 'accidentally' touching her little breasts in the process.
Cindy nodded, setting the nurse back on the floor. "You're good, honey. Run along now."
The nurse shook her head, still smiling. She pointed her thumb upward. "Going up, ma'am. "Can I go with you, please?"
Cindy pushed her ID card in and out of the slot. As the door opened, she said, "Okay, but you behave yourself."
"Yes, ma'am!"
Cindy had to turn to suppress a giggle. She thought she also heard a small giggle from one of the little girls taped to her stomach.
Next...
"Noooo!" screamed the tiny, red-haired girl, attempting to run for the back of the cage. Her efforts, were, however, in vain because the plastic glove was long enough to reach every corner of the little enclosure, and the little girl was soon trapped in Tim's grasping fingers.
