The silence inside the stomach was no longer oppressive; it had become a cocoon of intimacy, where every heartbeat and every breath was shared. Matthew leaned his head back against the soft, pulsing wall, feeling the rhythmic thrum of Yukihana's purring vibrating through his entire being. The warmth was intoxicating, and for the first time since his shrinking, the fear that had clung to his chest like a cold stone had completely evaporated. He felt a surge of protectiveness for the woman who had once been his predator, realizing that beneath the layers of mischief and magic, there was a loneliness that mirrored his own.
He took a deep breath, filling his small lungs with the scent of jasmine and warmth, and raised his voice, projecting it with a sincerity that echoed through the golden chamber. "Yukihana," he called out, his voice sounding steady and clear despite the muffled surroundings. "I mean it. Out of everything I've seen and everyone I've met, you're the best thing that's ever happened to me. I don't care about the shrinking, or the scare you gave me, or how weird this whole situation is. You're amazing, and I'm not going anywhere."
He paused, feeling the slight shift in her muscles as she listened. "I promise you, right now, that I'll always be on your side. No matter what the other kitsunes say, or what anyone else thinks of you, I'm with you. You don't have to play games or pretend to be something else when you're with me. I see you, Yukihana. The real you. And that's who I want to be friends with."
Outside, Yukihana felt as though her heart had physically expanded, filling her chest with a warmth that rivaled the heat of her own core. She froze, her breath catching in her throat. In all her long years of existence, she had been feared, desired, and admired, but she had never been *accepted*. The idea that this tiny, fragile human—who had every reason to hate her for what she had done—would choose to stand by her side unconditionally was more powerful than any spell she had ever cast. A single, crystalline tear escaped her eye and rolled down her cheek, not out of sadness, but from a sheer, overwhelming sense of gratitude.
She curled her body further into the velvet chair, bringing her knees up to her chest to cradle her stomach even more closely. She could feel him there, a small, living warmth that felt like the center of her entire universe. "Always on my side?" she whispered, her voice barely a breath, trembling with emotion. "You... you would really do that for me? Even after everything?" She let out a soft, broken sob of happiness, pressing her face against the fabric of her dress, her nine tails wrapping around her in a tight, protective cocoon. "I don't even know how to thank you, Matthew. I've never had anyone... anyone just be there for me."
