Getting to know more about Jimena and her story
You don't know for sure how long it took her to finish the work teacher Gabriela had assigned to the class, but from your perspective, Jimena finished the task very quickly as if no time at all. This was good because you wanted to know at least a bit more about your caretaker: she looks very tough at first glance, and that's without mentioning that she's a member of a band. However, she seems like a person worthy of your trust despite these facts. Well, there was only one main way to get your curiosity sated (and that small remaining bit of fear and doubt removed).
Jimena was many things, but being unaware of her surroundings wasn't one of them: to not be able to remain ever watchful and attentive to everything around oneself would mean death or worse where the main part of her life was exercised. In this particular circumstance, it meant that she was completely aware of her new companion and responsibility, for Denis was still somewhat afraid of her despite likely being informed by Miss Gabriela as she went to retrieve him. An expected reaction, considering all the factors. Yet it also meant that she was aware of the more predominant emotion she could see in her tiny care's eyes: curiosity. She didn't show it, but the small fact than that was the primary feeling of her charge made her happy; good, this kid wasn't a complete coward dominated by his fears, he had some backbone even considering his new permanent condition. She always found those kinds of people to be very attractive, just like her current girlfriend. Although, if things developed suitably...she could see her beloved having no issue with adding a third member to their lovely and private partnership, for just like herself, she also could like guys.
The young lady pushed those thoughts aside, at least until a more proper time for them; now was a time of chatting with her care. Once she made herself comfortable, she spoke to Denis, speaking in her usual gruff voice:
"Muy bien, ahora estoy disponible para responder toda duda que puedas tener, al menos hasta el final de la clase. ¿Tienes algún problema con esa condición?"("Very good, now I am available to answer any questions you may have, at least until the end of the class. Do you have a problem with that condition?")
"N-not at all, Jimena." is what you reply, having a small moment of hesitation before you calm yourself by remembering that Gabriela, that kind woman that was the first to aid you, trusts this girl.
Jimena just nods, thankful that you're so willing to accept her condition, even when still having some fear with her. She then looked down at you, waiting for your questions.
You knew that you had limited time, so you had to ask the questions that would clear the most pressing issues for you. With this in mind, you spend a few seconds before concluding which ones were the most appropriate. Once this was done, you look up from the desk to the giantess, and asked her your first question:
"Well Jimena, teacher Gabriela told me that you're a member of a particular band, which works alongside the police. Could you please give me further details? Is likely that you're going to introduce me to them once this class is over and you need to return home, so some knowledge of my new acquaintances would be very useful, not to mention in this case very interesting."
Jimena slightly smiled, finding your curiosity for her band to be both expect and more importantly, a matter she was very happy to clear up. She then spoke, in a slightly cheerful tone to make herself that bit less intimating to you:
I definitely agree with your final comment Denis. Very good; as for the band, we are the Mayo’s Defenders, vigilantes and protectors in these parts. Originally we were all girls, but after we started expanding beyond Chicania with the support of the regional police, a new and recent batch of new members included boys. As for what we do, it's simple: we act where the police cannot by law in a timely manner, catching and if necessary executing criminals and especially to members of any cartel that wishes to include Chicania in their territories; the support of the people is what gives us strength; we also fulfill the function of escorts for hire, but only for people that we know do not have any dirty dealings.")
"That...sounds pretty awesome! Glad to know that I'm under the care of a member of such a group." you comment, looking at her with eyes brimming with wonder. Never thought you would ever meet such a person in your life.
However, as marvelous as this girl looked in your eyes, she didn't approve of the way she was being looked at, for several reasons. So, before continuing with the chat, she needs to hammer out a key point. She spoke again, in a slightly more serious (and perhaps angry) tone than usual, saying:
Ahora con esto claro, dime: ¿sigue sonando cool?"("Boy, get this: what I just described to you may sound great, but it's not a life I'd wish on anyone. I and my friends had no choice but to take drastic measures to bring a semblance of peace and freedom to our homes, and that only stays like it because we strive every day that it is so. I have lost several friends over time, and I have no doubt that I will lose more before our allies in local government clean up all the corruption that surrounds them and be able to act so that we can start living a "normal" life. Now with this clear, tell me: does it still sound cool?")
"No...It doesn't...sorry if my previous comment might have...aroused some feelings..." you reply weakly, taken aback by the strong and unexpected backlash. Jimena noticed this, and after sighing, said:
"Me alegra que hayas entendido la realidad...y lo siento si te asuste; no me gusta la mirada tan romantizada que mucha gente ilusa tiene respecto a gente como yo."("I'm glad you understood reality... and I'm sorry if I scared you; I don't like the romanticized look that many deluded people have towards people like me.")
"No problem, I can understand why considering what you just describe to me. Anyway, let's change to the next question, shall we?" you said, trying to return the atmosphere to its previous calm demeanor.
Jimena just nods, agreeing with you; she also doesn't want to keep this tension any more than needed.
The next questions were simple: you asked her more about why there were only females at first, to which Jimena replied that it was because there were not any guys back in the original neighborhood the band originally started in, all of them either having recruited by the competing cartels or worse. Next, she explained that although they were all originally young girls with only the sheer determination and desire to rid their homes of the fear of the cartels, thanks to the training of local honest police were they able to become a capable fighting force. Last, when you asked her about the current situation of the band, she explained to you that is still predominantly female, with most being around her age; however, older people had recently joined the band, giving it a great influx of reliable sources of experience.
This and more were the few questions and answers you managed to get before the bell rang. Jimena then explained that she had to take a relatively long trip back to her home, warning you that she might need to get creative regarding where you travel with her, to keep you safe; after all, she knew firsthand that enemies might manage to slip undetected despite the patrols utmost efforts, breaking all sort of havoc in otherwise clear and safe areas. You thank her for both the warning itself and her desire to keep you safe, which she merely stated was her job. Now, once she got her stuff ready and left the school, which manner was the way she traveled to and from her home?
