Heather Miles couldn't help but feel as if she were slowly walking to the gallows. Each and every step on her part felt heavy and the effort it took to move one foot in front of the other was exhausting. Had it not been for Patsy she might have actually chickened out and ran back home.
"I'm a dead woman walking." She whispered warily.
"Don't worry. I've got your back." Patsy assured her.
She wouldn't let anything happen to her best friend while she was within earshot. If someone wanted to get to Heather then they would have to go through her. The last time someone tried they ended up with a black eye and a fat lip. She was ready for a fight. She had to be.
Heather smiled faintly. "Thanks for always sticking by me,"
The goth girl returned the smile. "You've always been there for me."
The two had been thick as thieves ever since they were kids. They grew up together and knew each other inside and out. They were pretty much sisters in all but blood and always had the other's back even before the shift in personas. This new situation they found themselves in only made their bond stronger.

"I just don't understand it, Ruthie." Edna spoke. "It's like Heather suddenly grew a conscience and figured out how to be human."
"She was always human, Ed. Just nasty." Ruth corrected. Even still, her best friend's story left her feeling more than a little shook.
Heather Miles crying?
Heather Miles having a panic attack?
Heather Miles apologizing for being awful?
"I know but... for the first time ever I saw a person instead of a hellspawn." The geek girl continued. "It was like I was looking at-"
"Yourself." Ruth finished already knowing the answer. She'd been there whenever Edna had a particularly hard day.
"Yeah." She confessed. "And now I don't know what to think anymore."
Heather Miles had always been a source of pain for her. An evil bitch who went out of her way to make others suffer and got off on it. Then the student body used her as a scapegoat to cover their own assess and as a result broke her. She wasn't a monster anymore, just a tall girl who was frightened of her own shadow.
Ruth gave her a light pat on the shoulder. "Just follow your gut and remember that you can lean on me if you need to."
Edna smiled. "Will do."
______
Heather walked down the hallway feeling all the eyes on her. They were all glaring at her or whispering out in the open. She could see it in their eyes, some were afraid, some were wary, and others were just angry. They wanted retribution and knew what that looked like for her.
All sound turned into whitenoise and she could feel her heart thumping in her chest.
Patsy noticed this and gently squeezed her hand. "Easy now, I've got you."
The effect was almost immediate as Heather's heart rate started to slow. "They're all glaring at me."
"I know." Patsy whispered.
The blonde felt trapped like a rat. "They're all whispering about me."
The goth inched that much closer. "I know."
"Why hasn't anyone said anything yet." Heather whispered.
That was a good question. Patsy frowned. They were all just probably waiting for an opening. She couldn't tell Heather that though so instead she replied in the only way that felt right.
